Your Dream Expansion Team

Pretty simple idea: you're the owner (and GM if you wish) of your very own expansion team. What would your team look like? It can be as specific and detailed as you want. I'll throw out a couple...

Introducing your NFL Dream Team of Tomorrow - ESPN

Saints had 3 players make the roster: Jahri Evans, Thomas Morstead, and Garrett Hartley... is this a good thing or bad thing that 2/3 of the guys that made it are kicker-types?

A good number of current players also appear to be excellent coaching material. Here are my best candidates. Who would you add? Drew Brees already is a coach in the huddle. Drew Brees. Most star players, especially quarterbacks, are not good candidates for coaching. They have too many other opportunities. They don’t need the work. And in their post playing days they don’t have the drive it takes to be an effective coach. There have been exceptions, however. And Brees could be one of them, if he gets bit by the coaching bug. Brees has rare humility for an elite player. You could easily see him making the kind of personal sacrifices coaches have to make. He also is one of the premier leaders in the game. He has an understanding of the big picture. And he obviously understands complex offensive concepts.

Coach Payton Leans on Joe Vitt as an Assistant Coach

"In my case, I truly have one who is a consigliere, someone I trust to tell me something I may not want to hear," Saints coach Sean Payton said of Vitt. "If you were to define what I see as an assistant head coach, it would be exactly Joe Vitt. He has experience. This is his 33rd year in the league. He’s been a head coach before (interim coach of the Rams in 2005). He’s been with five other teams. He’s been with winning teams that were functional. He’s been with losing teams that were dysfunctional. He’s the most important member of our staff." also goes on to talk about the Top 100 and gives his list to include: "4. Brees. He is the best free agent signing since Reggie White."

Arian Foster was (almost) once a Saint??

"After agreeing to terms with the New Orleans Saints, Foster changed his mind and went with the Texans."

Best of NFL: NFC South coaches/teams

Best X's and O's: Sean Payton. If you had to take one NFC South coach to win one game, Payton is the guy. If you expanded the field to the entire NFL, he still might be the guy. There’s not a coach and quarterback more on the same page than Payton and Drew Brees, and that’s why the Saints have become a consistently good team. It also doesn’t hurt that Payton went out and got Gregg Williams to handle the defense a couple years ago. Best motivator: Payton. He’s done things like hand out baseball bats as a reminder for his team to "bring the wood’’ and brought back Deuce McAllister as a ceremonial leader during the playoff run at the end of the 2009 season. Payton seems to pay a lot of attention to the mood of his team and knows what buttons to push and when to push them. (Teams) Best celebrity fan, Kenny Chesney: He’s not just a fan of the New Orleans Saints, he played for them. Well, sort of. A few years back the Saints held a press conference to announce they were signing the country singer/wide receiver to a contract. They never really did, but it was coach Sean Payton’s way of having fun with one of his best friends. It’s not unusual to see Chesney around the Saints. Heck, he’s even gone out on the practice field and attempted to catch punts.

Best of NFL: NFC South players

Best leader: Drew Brees. I’ll make a case that he’s the best leader in the entire NFL. There are some other great leaders in this division, but Brees stands above them all. He’s gone out of his way to keep the Saints together during the lockout and that should pay dividends when the season gets here. Even before the lockout, Brees had complete control of the New Orleans locker room. A lot of people thought the Saints were taking a bad gamble when they brought in Jeremy Shockey a few years ago. Shockey was a controversial figure in New York and literally pushed quarterback Eli Manning around. Shockey had a short and relatively productive career in New Orleans and you rarely heard a peep out of him. That’s largely because Shockey was smart enough to realize you don’t challenge Brees.
