A note in Baggs' blog today made me sick to my stomach, and in the spirit of misanthropy, had to share:

Why Eugenio Velez and not Nate Schierholtz in Sunday’s lineup? Because Bruce Bochy was playing matchups, that’s why.

Who cares who's the better player? It's all about matchups. Who cares that Velez is quite simply terrible, only blessed with a marginal amount of hand-eye coordination and reflexes that enables him to have gotten lucky on the occasional pitch, and only then because he swings so damn much? Who cares that Nate clearly has some actual talent in him, and still has a chance to be a good player for quite some time? Matchups, baby, matchups.

This is not the way to manage during a rebuilding year.

Sabean: Burriss starting SS in 2009

tko5 over on the official Giants forum recapped the Sabean show today.  Probably the most interesting piece is that Manny will be the starter at short next year, and they hope to get him 145+ games.

Personally, I'm stoked.  Burriss has easily been one of the more pleasant surprises this year, and clearly has more talent than the other youngsters he's competing with.  Ochoa might be able to field, but we don't have a ton of need for him or his weird way of wearing his hat.  Velez can throw himself under a trolley for all I care; I'd much rather see Denker in his place.

I'd love to see this starting for the first half of next season:

1b: Ishikawa

2b: Frandsen

SS: Burriss

3B: Pablo

LF: Lewis

CF: Rowand

RF: Schierholtz

C: Bengie

Sure they're not going to win it all.  Sure not all of them will pan out.  But I'll be damned if the last few games that have featured most of these players haven't been the most exciting in ages.
