Mike Mitchell headed from Panthers to Steelers

1

Pittsburgh!!!!!! First I have to thank God for this blessing and Mr. Rooney and the Steelers organization for such a great opportunity!

Bill Polian's Free Agent Tracker

2

I have it set to display the Panther's free agents. Play with the filter if you was others.

Report: Mike Mitchell fielding calls from a lot of teams

+

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reported Saturday that Mitchell fielded calls from the Bears, Eagles, Falcons and Broncos and added the Redskins to the list on Sunday. (links to Person's tweets are included in the PFT article).

NFC South Salary Cap Analysis

+

DW at the Falcoholic put this up and I thought a few folks here might be interested . . .

Barnwell is not a fan of Gano's contract

+

He isn't a fan of of the contract at all. In fact (in one of the footnotes) he compares Gano and our favorite kicker Mare. He says: "It’s reminiscent of the four-year, $12 million contract that Hurney handed out to a similar kicker in Olindo Mare, who lasted only one year in Carolina before being replaced by Justin Medlock, who lasted 10 games before being replaced by … Graham Gano! Wheel of Kickers is fun."

Mitchell, Ginn next priority for Carolina

2

"Management is talking with representatives for free safety Mike Mitchell and wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., so that appears to be the direction the team is heading. Both make sense."

NFPLA says salary cap will be $133m

2

What is the 2014 Salary Cap? The 2014 Salary Cap is set at $133 million per Club, a $10 million increase over the prior year.

An analysis of NFL Drafts from 2004-2008

Bois has some interesting graphs there. . .

Support growing within league for adding two teams to NFL playoffs

+

The Washington Post's football blogger Mark Maske is hearing from 'insiders': "I think there’s a lot of momentum for it," one of those people said. "I don’t know for sure if the votes are there yet [among the owners] or not. But there is momentum. A lot of people seem in favor of it."

Smitty would have liked a heads up on his 'evaluation'

1

Steve isn't happy that the first time he heard that the team was 'evaluating his role' was from the media covering the Combine.

Tajh Boyd had a meeting with the Panthers at the Combine

+

Clemson's Tajh Boyd told reporters in Indianapolis the Panthers were one of about 20 teams he'd talked to. The same article mentions that Johnny Manziel called Cam for advice.

Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Robert Quinn are franchise-builders

1

Gil Brandt over at NFL.com asked himself: " If I were constructing a franchise from scratch today, which young NFL star would I pick to be the cornerstone of my team?" Not surprisingly his top 6 list contains two Panthers. . .

Combine Measurments

+

Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country has oodles of data posted so I just grabbed the link to his posts. Enjoy!

ESPN's John Clayton says the Cap could be as high as $132m.

1

According to a source, the projection for the 2014 salary cap is now at $132 million.

Is it time to draft a backup for Cam?

1

David Newton of ESPN thinks we have gotten lucky so far with Cam's resilience. I'm not certain we should spend a draft pick with all our needs but he seems certain DA isn't the answer.

Panthers pick up 2014, 2015 options on Thomas Davis

+

A league source tells PFT that the Panthers have exercised both the 2014 and 2015 options on Davis’ contract. Davis is now set to make $13.5 million over the next two years and $5.25 million next season in salary and bonuses.

Panthers should know future of Jordan Gross soon

2

Now, Gettleman’s waiting for Gross to return from a family vacation to Idaho. "He’s mulling it over," Gettleman said of Gross. It’s a huge decision, … when you’re talking about laying it down."

Mike Mayock's position rankings for 2014 NFL Draft

+

For the curious among us. Fair warning, there is an autoplay video at the top of the link. A link to the transcript of his most recent call is here.

Cam Newton not thinking holdout

+

I'm glad to hear it. He is saying all the stuff I want to hear in this article.

That mock draft you read today was insanely inaccurate

+

Kiper, McShay, Prisco, Schrager and Banks are all mockers at 'reputable' outlets. How well did they do last year? Read the title :)

The NFL Draft: Is it High Stakes Poker or Roulette?

+

How sure are first round draft picks? It looks like the odds are a lot worse than I thought. It is a bit old but the statistics should be good for the years looked at . . .

NFL Power Structures: Who really runs a team?

+

For the curious, the Phinsider decided to research all 32 teams and try to decipher exactly who is in charge of what in each of the 32 teams. I found it interesting . . .

The future of NFL training with sports science?

+

This isn't really about Carolina but it may be the future of the NFL. The Eagles approach to touch screen training may revolutionize how players prepare for games.

Pro Bowl rule changes

+

1. A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. 2. After the two-minute warning of each quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the game clock will stop and not start again until the next snap. 3. After an incomplete pass the game clock will start on the referee’s signal, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half. 4. A 35/25-second play clock will be used instead of the normal 40/25-second clock. 5. The game clock will not stop after a quarterback sack at any point during the game.

22-1: Panther's Super Bowl victory chances next year

+

These Vegas types don't waste any time to they? I guess the gamblers among us can get started early.

RR takes PFT's Coach of the Year for 2013

1

I think we found a member of the team Florio hasn't taken a dislike to!

Hurney for GM in Tampa?

3

It is probably never going to happen but Pat Y. over at ESPN put Hurney in as an outlier:

But the Bucs also could consider former Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo, who has ties to Smith and the Bucs, former Carolina general manager Marty Hurney and former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Gross' speech launched trek to title

+

I love the Highlander ref, sounds like it was an awesome speech!

Barnwell on Cam's detractors

+

I love it:

You saw all that. Here's my question: If you insist on knocking Newton at this point, what's left to criticize? What's the next thing that will come up? Winning a playoff game? Winning a Super Bowl? That will come. For the moment, though, Newton is content to simply help his team win football games.
