Is it time to draft a backup for Cam?

David Newton of ESPN thinks we have gotten lucky so far with Cam's resilience. I'm not certain we should spend a draft pick with all our needs but he seems certain DA isn't the answer.

Panthers pick up 2014, 2015 options on Thomas Davis

A league source tells PFT that the Panthers have exercised both the 2014 and 2015 options on Davis’ contract. Davis is now set to make $13.5 million over the next two years and $5.25 million next season in salary and bonuses.

Panthers should know future of Jordan Gross soon

Now, Gettleman’s waiting for Gross to return from a family vacation to Idaho. "He’s mulling it over," Gettleman said of Gross. It’s a huge decision, … when you’re talking about laying it down."

Mike Mayock's position rankings for 2014 NFL Draft

For the curious among us. Fair warning, there is an autoplay video at the top of the link. A link to the transcript of his most recent call is here.

Cam Newton not thinking holdout

I'm glad to hear it. He is saying all the stuff I want to hear in this article.

That mock draft you read today was insanely inaccurate

Kiper, McShay, Prisco, Schrager and Banks are all mockers at 'reputable' outlets. How well did they do last year? Read the title :)

The NFL Draft: Is it High Stakes Poker or Roulette?

How sure are first round draft picks? It looks like the odds are a lot worse than I thought. It is a bit old but the statistics should be good for the years looked at . . .

NFL Power Structures: Who really runs a team?

For the curious, the Phinsider decided to research all 32 teams and try to decipher exactly who is in charge of what in each of the 32 teams. I found it interesting . . .

The future of NFL training with sports science?

This isn't really about Carolina but it may be the future of the NFL. The Eagles approach to touch screen training may revolutionize how players prepare for games.

Pro Bowl rule changes

1. A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. 2. After the two-minute warning of each quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the game clock will stop and not start again until the next snap. 3. After an incomplete pass the game clock will start on the referee’s signal, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half. 4. A 35/25-second play clock will be used instead of the normal 40/25-second clock. 5. The game clock will not stop after a quarterback sack at any point during the game.

22-1: Panther's Super Bowl victory chances next year

These Vegas types don't waste any time to they? I guess the gamblers among us can get started early.

RR takes PFT's Coach of the Year for 2013

I think we found a member of the team Florio hasn't taken a dislike to!

Hurney for GM in Tampa?

It is probably never going to happen but Pat Y. over at ESPN put Hurney in as an outlier:

But the Bucs also could consider former Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo, who has ties to Smith and the Bucs, former Carolina general manager Marty Hurney and former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Gross' speech launched trek to title

I love the Highlander ref, sounds like it was an awesome speech!

Barnwell on Cam's detractors

I love it:

You saw all that. Here's my question: If you insist on knocking Newton at this point, what's left to criticize? What's the next thing that will come up? Winning a playoff game? Winning a Super Bowl? That will come. For the moment, though, Newton is content to simply help his team win football games.

Why do the 'Aints do so badly away?

One writer at CSC thinks it is all Sean Payton's fault. . .

Source: Cap could exceed $127.5 million for 2014

The owners have been told $126.3m but the (aways anon) source said $127.5m was possible.

Hardy's life goes on in Charlotte, Hogwarts

I love how clueless the reporters were when he had to explain the 'Kraken,Hogwarts' intro!

Game 150: A Week in the Life of an Officiating Crew

While King isn't my favorite sports journalist, I found this article fascinating. It is the first of a 3 parter where King follows some refs around. The post game process sounds simple neurotic to me. . .

It seems PFT thinks we are a playoff lock

They say:

The Saints and Panthers play each other twice in December, and if one team sweeps those two games, that team would all but lock up the NFC South. The team that doesn’t win the NFC South is virtually assured of a wild card.

Panthers who merit Pro Bowl consideration

David Newton over at ESPN lists eight Panthers he thinks deserves the nod. I'm not particularly interested in the Pro-Bowl because the game almost always sucks but I know the players are. . . if only for the bonus many have baked into their contracts.

For those that do care, the ballet is available here.

Ref explains picking up penalty flag

The explanation:

There were two officials that came in. One was the umpire and the other one was our side judge and there was a discussion at that point as to the, in essence, the catchability of the ball due to its location. So it was determined at that point in time that when the primary contact occurred on the tight end that the ball, in essence, was coming in underthrown and in essence it was immediate at that point intercepted at the front end of the end zone. So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred.

Midseason Report: Carolina Panthers

David Newton over at ESPN hands out letter grades to various portions of the team.

Fear the Panthers

Barnwell has a stat filled half article on the Panthers. Boiled down to a sentence or two: Nice job on the streak. Prove you are for real next week. Still publicity is publicity. I did notice he is calling the coach "Riverboat Ron" too. Is this a meme yet?

Report: John Fox Suffers Heart Attack

Reportedly the Broncos think he'll be ok. Thoughts and prayer for Coach Fox.

Guess who the Rams tried to lure out of retirement as QB?

Yeah, they are that desperate . . .

Julio Jones Has A Foot Injury, Could Miss Rest Of 2013 Season

I guess the injury bug has been nipping at the folks down around Atlanta too.

If I am reading this right, they give the Panthers a 52.1% chance of making the playoffs and a 3% chance of winning the Super Bowl. I'm not a stats person but these kinda surprised me. Is FOs a reputable site?
