Gang Green Nation What This Offseason Tells Us: Running Back

Photo

It feels like more than a decade since there was a draft where we didn't take a RB. Everyone says Rex loves his CBs, but RB is the position he has always drafts without fail. This draft strategy compliments Rex's ground and pound mentality. First he drafted Shonn Greene to compliment and replace Thomas Jones. Then came Joe McKnight to replace Leon Washington. In 2011, we picked Powell to give Greene a rest from all the punishment he takes throughout the year. We can't forget John Connor either. He was brought in to replace the future Hall of Famer, Tony Richardson. Last April, the Rex/Tanny connection brought in Terrance Ganaway.

Ganaway is a big, thunderous back, who can hit the whole harder than most players at the same position. His running style reminds me of LeGarrette Blount, only Ganaway has much better hands, ability to change directions, and character. Powell hasn't proved at all, that he can be called upon to do anything. If either Greene or McKnight went down with an injury last year, we would have been in a lot of trouble. I am glad the Jets made this pick, so I won't have the same worry going into this year.

What this tells me is that Rex and Tanny are covering all their bases at the running back position. They saw the same Powell we did last year. If Greene goes down, the last person he would want to count on to pound the rock between the tackles, is Powell. Ganaway gives Rex some options. If Bilal doesn't miraculously get better, Rex has Ganaway to call on. There is another reason to like this move. Shonn Greene is a free agent next year, and we are going to be short on cash. If Ganaway shows Rex a lot of good snaps, for the few snaps he will get, they might be ok with letting Greene walk.

What I think will happen is Rex will give Ganaway and McKnight a lot of opportunities to show what they can do. If we can't find a way to bring back "War Machine," we will need a replacement. This replacement will either come from someone we already have, or we will draft someone. Either way, my money is on us drafting another RB next year no matter what happens with Greene.

**FYI** The Jets have their 1st day of OTAs on Tuesday the 22nd.

Gang Green Nation What This Offseason Tells Us: Outside Linebacker/Defensive End

Photo

Besides right tackle, I think most people would agree the next area of need, would have been in the pass rush. Our pass rush has been a mysterious beast. In 09, our pass rush only survived because of Rex's schemes. By 2010, the league was onto our tricky ways. For the past 2 years, our pass rush has been nonexistent. When we look at Rex's past, we see one of the best pass rushing OLB/DEs in the game, with Suggs. This put the notion in our minds that we would need Suggs' equal or better to get our pass rush up to snuff.

Going into the 2010 season, we wanted our Suggs, and we got Kyle Wilson. Before 2011, we wanted our Suggs again, and were rewarded with Wilkerson. Now it is 2012, and one again, we had hoped for landing our future Suggs, and we pick Coples. None of these three guys are pass rushing OLBers, but that doesn't mean there is no hope for our pass rush. In fact I see a bright future for our pass rush. I believe this, because of another acquisition this offseason, Karl Dunbar.

What this tells me is that Rex might be flipping the script on the league. Yes our base D is a 3-4 defense. In that defense, guys like Coples and Wilkerson are used more to take up blockers than to get to the QB. We also run a great deal of plays out of the 4-3 and nickel packages. In these 4 down linemen sets, guys like Coples and Wilkerson will be the primary pass rushers. Rex might have been planning to switch to more of a 4-3 defense, the whole time.

What I think will happen is with the addition of Karl Dunbar, I see us going to more sets with 4 down linemen. In the end, the 4-3 set better suits the players we have. Dunbar's fame comes from running one of the most dominant 4 man fronts in football, in recent years. The transition to this kind of defense, will cancel out the need for a traditional 3-4 OLBer. Both Aaron Maybin and Demario Davis would work perfectly as 4-3 OLBers. This new 4-3 heavy, hybrid D, would usher in a new era to the Rex Ryan defense.

Gang Green Nation What This Offseason Tells Us: Inside Linebacker

Photo

What are some of the words you think of when you think of our LBing core of 2011? A few I think of are old, slow, and limited. All three of those criticisms apply to Bart Scott. In football years, Scott is a living fossil. When it comes to speed, there are few LBers slower. Someone who is old and slow isn't a problem if they can still contribute a good deal of productivity. Unfortunately for us, Scott is really only useful on running plays. With the league shifting to a pass 1st league, Scott's usefulness is dwindling.

At around $6 Million this year, and $8 Million next year, the level of production Scott produces doesn't match his price tag. The Jets needed to get younger, faster, and cheaper in the worst kind of way. In free agency there were some flirtations with some ILBers, but nothing really materialized. I had a strong feeling they would be taking an inside linebacker at some point in the draft. My prediction was proved correct in the 3rd round, with a player a lot of us fell in love with. Demario Davis fits the bill of an ILBer with youth, speed, and a cheaper price tag.

What this tells me is that the end is near for Scott. Rex has all but said that Demario will be replacing Scott. This can be inferred by him calling Davis a young Bart Scott. We made the right move by drafting a replacement, rather than signing one off the free agent market. A free agent might be more experienced, and polished, but they are far from cheap. With the rookie wage scale in place, it is cheaper than ever to draft replacements for any position. This tells me that the Jets might be shifting philosophies. In prior years, Tanny has been more willing to fill positions of need with big name free agents. This has put us in a lot of money trouble. Mike might finally know what it means to build through the draft.

What I think will happen is that Scott will be used specifically on 1st downs or obvious running plays. This is a roll Scott can play, and thrive in. There is no one I would want more doing the dirty work, than Scott. Then on all other downs, Davis can be rotated in to do everything Bart can't. I feel this is the best rout to take. We wouldn't be throwing Davis into the fire by burdening him with a 3 down assignment. Instead, we allow him to get his beak wet this year in a limited roll. Next year, when Scott is most likely released, he will take over the full time.

Gang Green Nation What This Offseason Tells Us: Right Tackle

Photo

It's been almost 2 weeks since the draft, and I have spent a lot of time trying to pick up the hints the Jets front office threw down. We can discern just as much from the picks we did make, with the picks we didn't make. The moves and picks we made this offseason, also says a lot about what we may do in the future. Of course, at any moment, Tanny can do something unexpected. When he does that, everything we once thought, gets turned on its head.

Everything starts with what the feelings were before the offseason even started. I think most people would agree, our biggest positional weakness last year, was right tackle. There is no question that the most hated starter in 2011, was Wayne Hunter. Rex and company were chirping that they were comfortable with what they had at right tackle. Naturally, none of us believed the chirps, and thought Hunter would be cut before his contract became guaranteed. That day came and went, and before we knew what happened, Hunter was guaranteed a spot in 2012.

Then free agency started, and there were a number of solid tackles the Jets could have brought in. As we all know, they pass on taking that rout. Fans were starting to get an uneasy feeling that Hunter was actually going to be our starter. Some people proclaimed doom, but some held out hope for the draft. All 8 picks were made, and none of them were an OT. Tanny and Rex fooled us all with the truth. Hunter's status on this team is guaranteed, but him starting isn't.

What this tells me is that Rex and Tony seriously believe that either Hunter, Vlad, or Howard will be a suitable starter. At 1st glance, this group of raggamuffins doesn't seem to have a single starter among them. In the front office's mind, they might think a full off-season, and more of a running game focus, will help these guys a lot. They very well might be right, but it's still a risky non-move in my opinion. From where we stand now, it looks like there is going to be a 3 way competition for the position. That's not to say that at any moment, Tanny won't bring in a Vernon Carey to nail the RT spot home.

What I think will happen is, Hunter will most likely beat out both Vlad and Howard for the starting spot. He might even look slightly improved. This may be because of all the running we do, or by the full off-season. Either way, I think it's only a matter of time before Rex wants to open up the passing game once again. If that is to ever happen, a new RT will be needed. Unless Hunter or whoever, dominates on the right side, I see someone new being brought in for 2013.

Gang Green Nation GGM's Final Jets Mock Draft

The draft is tomorrow! I couldn't be happier that it is all so close to being over. I have been looking at prospects from as early as 2010. It will be a huge relief to see how it all shakes out. Without further ado, here is my last Jets Mock of the year.

Gang Green Nation Revis, Ohhh Revis

Photo

I would just like to thank Revis for taking the spotlight off of Tebow and Sanchez. Here is what our beloved, All Pro CB had to say.

"I just don't know," said Revis. "I'm not saying I am going to holdout. I'm not saying I'm not."

With that said, let the madness begin. Everyone is going to think the worst right now, and I don't blame you. Revis could go down as the best player to ever wear green and white. If there is any news that he is unhappy, people are going to sweat. When Revis signed his band-aid extension, it was known that we will be back in contract talks sooner than everyone would like.

There are two groups of thought. In one corner, there are the people that believe Revis is one of the best players in the NFL, and deserves to be paid. In the other corner, there are the people that think he is selfish, and shout just finish out his contract. Each group can argue until they are blue, no one will be right or wrong.

The Jets did something very smart when they extended Revis. They added a clause that would add years to his deal if he holds out. This means, the Jets can take a hard line with Revis, and let him sit if he wants. His rights would be with the Jets until his prime starts to pass him by. Of course if the things go that way, we would be without Revis. Both sides would be in a bad place if things get that bad. It would be in everyones best interest to get something down as soon as possible. With so much at stake for both sides, I doubt it gets as ugly as it did in 2010. I don't believe anything will be done this off season by either camp, so everyone should calm down until there is actually something to worry about.

Gang Green Nation Make Your Own 2012 Jets Schedule

Photo

In honor of the 2012 schedule being released tonight, I thought we could partake in a fun, little activity. Why don't we make our own schedules while we wait for the NFL to bust out with the real thing. We have known our opponents for a while now, but we don't know when and where each game will be. Here is a list of our 2012 opponents:

Home: Texans, Colts, 49ers, Cardinals, Chargers, Bills, Dolphins, Patriots

Away: Jaguars, Titans, Seahawks, Rams, Steelers, Bills, Dolphins, Patriots

Come join me after the jump for what our schedule would look like if I were in charge, and make your own.

Gang Green Nation My 3rd Official Mock Draft 2 Rounds: 13 Days to the Draft

Photo

This is a very slow time in the world of football. If you are a football junkie like me, you are starved for something Jets related to come out. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there will be anything significant happening between now and the 26th. This forces me to make my own entertainment. I hope all of you will be entertained as well. Please join me after the jump to see my 2 round mock draft, along with all 10 Jets picks.

**UPDATE** The 2012 schedule will be released probably sometime this coming week. I've seen the 17th as a possibility.

Gang Green Nation Potential 2012 Jets Breakouts: John Conner

I know it's been a while since I have come out with a new edition to this series. It was my thinking that I hit on all the guys I thought would breakout this year. I am now convinced I have missed one. Plus, there is very little to talk about for the next 29 days, so sit back and enjoy.

Gang Green Nation 2012 Wish List: Part 4

Photo

The 2012, Jets roster is starting to take shape. With Free Agency winding down, the football world sets its sights on the Draft. If teams want to get younger and better, the Draft is where it happens. Teams are rushing to do as much scouting as possible, to complete their Big Boards. Once the Draft is over, the remaining free agents will fall to teams that weren't able to fill their needs with their picks. It is still a very young offseason, and there are still a lot of players that are not in place. I feel it is time to make another wish list, now that we have a better idea of what we need going into the Draft.

Gang Green Nation The Over Dramatic Reaction is Comical

I have been listening to everything everyone has said about this move, and something doesn't add up. I hear words like "disaster, horrendous, destructive." It's funny to hear all these people act like they know exactly what's going to happen. All the March predictions everyone's making, is not what I have a gripe with though. What I have a problem with, is the inflated sense of importance the media and the fans think they have. If you disagree, let me give you a little exercise. Everyone is scared that the moment Mark starts to struggle, there are going to be thousands of Tebow fanatics calling for Tim's rise to power. Now all of a sudden the Jets front office is going to start listening to all the cries for Tebow, and he becomes the starter.

All I have to say about that is, why would they listen to any of that? If the Jets have proved anything with this trade, it is that they don't care at all what the media or the fans think. Every five minutes I hear about how no one thinks this was a good trade. I can guarantee you, if they didn't listen to everyone with the negativity for the trade, they won't be listening to the negativity from the Tebow fanatics. The only ways I see Tebow becoming the starter of the Jets, are if Mark injures himself, the season is on the verge of being lost, or if they wanted Tebow to be the starter the whole time. The craziness that follows Tebow around, won't be the reason he becomes a starter.

Let's also move away from this feeling that Sanchez is a weak minded guy who will let all of this effect him. Mark is a lot stronger than we all think. There isn't one thing said off the field, last year, that effected his play on the field. Someone calling Sanchez out anonymously didn't cause him to rush his reads/throws. The fault of that lies in the hands of the O-line. As long as the Jets are for real about Sanchez being the starter, he will stay the starter.

Gang Green Nation Tebow and the Jets Could Work

Photo

Now before any of you send out a firing squad for me, listen to what I have to say. I think everyone is looking at this whole Tebow situation in the wrong light. It seems the Jets interest in Tebow is actually legit, and not only "kicking his tires." This has led to battle lines being drawn. I for one have a different opinion than some. At the end of this, you can call me crazy, I won't be offended.

Gang Green Nation My 2nd Official Mock Draft 2 Rounds: Pre Free Agency

I have decided to try something new. In the past I have only mocked a 1st round. I'm sure most people here really only care about who I pick for the Jets. Then I made a mock just for the Jets, but it's hard to grasp where people will land, without seeing who everyone else takes. Come see how I did after the jump.

Gang Green Nation Methodically Breaking Down the Manning Situation

With all the Manning news going around, I feel like it's my duty to chime in. The press conference is over. Manning is officially free to sign anywhere. There will be wild speculation, and unnamed sources galore. I believe that I am a man of reason. Therefore, I am going to try and methodically work my way through this big mess. I am not sold on either Manning or Sanchez. I hope by the end of this article, I will have made a decision. Come join me after the jump to see how it all breaks down in my mind.

Gang Green Nation My 1st Official Jets 2012 Mock Draft

In the past I have made posts with wish lists for this offseason. In them, I mention players I wish the Jets draft, but I didn't really go to far into why. I am going to change that right now. I am going into this mock draft with two things in mind. I want players that have potential to give us matchup advantages, and are athletically flexible to what we throw at them. I'm going to try and make this as realistic as possible. This means I will include un-tradable compensatory picks, and trades. Come join me after the jump for the guys I mock to the Jets.

Gang Green Nation Potential 2012 Jets Breakouts: Jeremy Kerley

Photo

Next, in my potential breakout series, is Jeremy Kerley. After his 1st year with the Jets, Kerley is looking like quite the steal for us. It's not often that a 5th round pick comes in and contributes right away like Jeremy. Out of all the young talent I will be mentioning in this series, I think Kerley has the most potential on the offensive side. Come read more after the jump...

Gang Green Nation Potential 2012 Jets Breakouts: Joe McKnight

Part 3 of my potential break out players of 2012, will shed some light on what I expect from Joe McKnight. Unlike my previous stories, McKnight is going into his 3rd year as a Jet. Some might say that he broke out last year, but I would argue that we only scratched the surface of what McKnight could do for us. Come join me after the jump to see what I mean.

Gang Green Nation Potential 2012 Jets Breakouts: Kenrick Ellis

Part two of my 2012 break out player series, focuses on our 3rd round pick last year, Kenrick Ellis. It's time for the big man to get some redemption. Ellis spent most of 2011 riding the pine, but I have a feeling, 2012 is going to be a whole different story. Come join me after the jump for more.

I regret to inform you that we are heading into the lull of the NFL offseason. Fear not my green friends, there is always something to talk about. I think it would be interesting to write some blurbs regarding players that have the potential to make a larger impact in 2012. Gang Green Nation 2012 Wish List: Part 3

This will be my 3rd and final wish list before free agency starts. The horrendous 2011 season is in our rearview mirror, and we can't afford to keep looking in it. There are a lot of needs to fill and very little cap room to fill them. Even with our cap room sorrows, we should still be able to put together a decent offseason. According to NyJetsCap.com, Tanny can clear anywhere from $15 to $20 million in cap space for 2012. I'll mention a few of those suggested moves later. It is probably more likely that it will be closer to the $15 million side. Stay tuned after the jump to see some cap moves, and my final 2012 wish list.

Gang Green Nation 2012 Wish List: Take 2

Photo

With the Super Bowl on the horizon, the 2011 season can finally end. I am sure many of us will be watching with a permanent bitter beer face. Once the game is over, we can begin our 2012 campaign. By the time August comes around, we will be looking at a brand new Jets team. I am very curious as to what it's going to look like, and how are they going to play together.

Gang Green Nation Talent Watch: Audie Cole, ILB, N.C. State

One position of need that hasn't gotten too much attention is at ILB. The 31 year old Bart Scott is only getting older and slower. There has also been talk about the Jets possibly moving on from Scott. Even if Bart is part of the 2012 Jets, a replacement will be needed sooner rather than later. If the Jets do decide to bring in some new blood to our ILbing group, there are a number of guys that would fit right in. One guy that I have had my eye on this year, is Audie Cole. more after the jump...

Gang Green Nation Would Going After Manning Go Against the Jets Offseason Philosophy?

The Peyton Manning talk won't be going away anytime soon. I have the feeling the Jets will be mentioned in connection to Manning, up until a destination is decided. The thought of two of the best QBs, of this era, playing in the same division, is very tempting. The thought brings me back to the days of Favre. When Brett came in, our hopes and dreams went into overdrive, knowing a Hall of Famer, would be tossing the rock for us. Of course, we know how that whole ordeal ended. With that being said, a healthy Manning is on a whole other level of QB play than Favre ever was. His field general mentality would take over our offense, and make it his own.

Once you look past all the glamor of a move to bring Manning to the Jets, you are left with theory that doesn't make much sense for the Jets. More after the jump...

Gang Green Nation What are Our Options?

With almost 2 months until free agency starts, it might be nice to get a good picture of what our options are going forward. We have a lot of needs going into the 2012 season. That seems to be a trend, hmmm. There are 3 ways to fill these needs, free agency, draft, or trade. I will only focus on the first two in this thread.

In free agency, there are two routs we could take. We can take the cheaper rout, and look for inexpensive gems, in the hopes that they shine with us. Then there are the stars of the NFL. These guys demand the big pay checks that go along with their big play. It's unrealistic to think we can get anymore than one star in any given off season. I will give you 3 of the top free agent, prospects for each position of need, and then 2 value guys.

In the draft, the chances of grabbing a starter outside or the 4th round, are very slim (Unless we are talking kicker or punter). In this section, I will give you my top 3 draft prospects for each position of need. This sort of goes without saying, but these guys are unproven talent. There are some positions of need, that I personally don't want a rookie taking.
