The picture painted in these articles is that Emmert is either completely incompetent or really corrupt. Maybe both? It also talks about his trendsetting moves at LSU - negative trends - of setting pay records for University Presidents and college coaches.

What do you guys think about this?

I thought about posting something relatively snarky but true like, "we may have some morons, but at least our players and coaches would know what to do if they caught a pedophile in the shower," but figured it would be counter productive.

In any case, the post started as a rant against Urban Meyer (which I heartily support) but became a 300 comment post about why the Big1 is better than everyone else because of AAU schools and how the SEC wins are all because of oversigning and redneck cousins.

Olympic Badminton shows where NCAA football playoffs may go?

I truly hate spoilers, but at this point, everything happened yesterday, so I am assuming people know about the Badminton controversy. Just in case, I'll put the rest below the jump...

Four teams of two (8 total players) conspired to LOSE matches yesterday in the hopes of getting better elimination round matchups. This is very controversial within the sport, and an initial IOC investigation has apparently disqualified all four teams from the rest of the Olympics.

I'm curious about the connection between this and college football. I think it's much more likely that an 11-0 Bama simply rests its best players in the Iron bowl - but is throwing games to avoid top teams a possibility?

Can no one else beat unranked teams?

Seriously, the rest of the contenders are going down in droves. Arkansas certainly has the ability to beat LSU - but does anyone really think they are the third best team in the country? Boise State has to be kicking themselves right now. How is it that Bama, who has beaten just two teams with a pulse all year - a near shoe-in for the MNC at this point. What a crazy season. Trust in Les.

ESPN story on Hillard and academics

Anybody else see this story http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=6021570 on Hillard and his work to improve his academics. Props to him, his mom and the school.

When he started high school he basically could not read. He went to a third grade class to use a new computer program and learn to read and improved dramatically in a matter of months. Nice to know that he had the guts to do something that was probably pretty humiliating - and that the school was wililng to work with him, but still held him accountable.

New Research of Scholarships and Athletes

ESPN has an interesting article http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5728653 that discusses a new study which suggests there is a substantial gap between what an athletic scholarship covers and the actual costs of school. In light of the discussion last week about paying college athletes, it seemed relevant.

I'm still not in favor of paying college athletes, but I do think that if they are offered a full ride, it should be a full ride. On the other hand, there are all sorts of inequities in athletic scholarships. For example, most baseball players only get a 1/3 scholarship. I imagine there are similar problems for other minor mens sports, like swimming, soccer and wrestling. Moreover, academic scholarships do not normally cover every cost either. They might cover tuition and room and board, but not fees, for example.

couple of thoughts going forward

Well, now we're 7-1. As bad as the team (and pretty much the whole team outside of the punters and Peterson on returns should feel like they have things to work on) played, we still have a lot going for this season. At the beginning of the season I thought 9-3 or 10-2 would be a very solid year. And coming in to the Auburn game I really felt like they were the team we matched up the worst against.

We have historically struggled against teams with big running QBs and our strength is the run game - whereas their weakness is the pass D. I think we should match up much better against Bama and especially Arkansas. Mallet's a great QB, but he's a statue who tends to throw a few stupid INTs every game. We should be able to make him pay with our corners. Bama has two great running backs, but McElroy's not that great. The key for us is going to be if we can get Ridley going.

So, I see a couple of possible positive outcomes. We could lose 1 of these two big games, win the rest (I know I know, we struggle with Houston Nutt) and go 10-2. Or we could lose both and sort of stumble to 9-3. Or we could win out and at 11-1 have a great shot at the Sugar Bowl, or with a little luck from Auburn's opponents, be in the SECCG.

In other words, despite playing about as badly as this team can play, we still have a ton to play for. The sky isn't actually falling.

Scroll down and under "flop" teams of the 2nd half of the season almost every on of SI's writers picks LSU as the biggest flop. Several predict that LSU will lose 3 of its last 5. Lots of snickering about the "mad hatter."

You wonder what LSU will have to do. Before UNC it was the biggest game of the year. Then it was WVU. Then Florida was going to wipe LSU out and start them on the road to losing four games. Now it's Auburn. What if LSU beats Auburn? Will they be the worst 8-0 team ever and destined to lsoe 2 of 4?

Lou Holtz as Les Miles' hat mentor

Did anyone else see the pregame commentary (Fri. night?). They were talking about Bama's game against Duke, which matches the current football and basketball champs up. Apparently, this also happened the year after Holtz led Notre Dame to the title and they showed Holtz on the field with a Les Miles style hat. The whole group on ESPN was cracking up about Holtz and Miles and Miles' new apple app - Recee Davis ended with "Have a great day."
