Bleeding Green Nation Why the eagles will beat the pack

As an Eagles fan, I've been here, done that. We've been in so many playoff scenarios over the last decade that I feel very confident in AR and the team. Why?

We are not a team you want to piss off. Ask the Redskins LeRon Landry. Ask the Colts. Ask the Giants. When this team has it's back to a wall, instead of crumbling, they gel and they rally. On top of all of this, the preseason darling Packers have been crowned the most dangerous team in the playoffs. No offense, but I think that title falls to us. My reasons after the jump

Bleeding Green Nation Kolb, Vick, and going forward

First off, today wasn't the first time we saw go over 300 yards and 3 td's on an nfl defense before. Kevin played very well. I know everyone's going to rave for him as hard as they ranted against him after Green Bay, or the check-down machine we saw against the Redskins. That is the nature of being fans, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Fact is, Kolb is what we thought he was; was being last Easter when we traded McNabb. He's a young first-time starter who has a ton of upside. He fit's the system to a "t." However, he's also in his first year of starting and as mentioned by everyone in the national media, inexperienced.

Yet after Kolb's performance today, I still think Vick should start. Why? Simply because Vick gives us the best chance to win in a wide open NFC. When healthy I think the eagles have the talent to contend with any team in the league. Look at what Kevin can do and what Mike can do. Vick gives us the better chance to win now, his legs and arm have been as good as Kolb if not better. Regardless of how efficient Kolb was against the Falcons, Vick could have done just as well given how well our O-line held up. Kolb had a lot of time to make his reads and strike.

The game-plan was also superb today. We gave them several different formations, changing up the play and look to keep Atlanta on it's heels. Dear Andy Reid, however you went about game planning this week please bottle it up and use it for the rest of this year. The end-around looks, the te-screen to celek, and the bomb to maclin were all the direct result of smart and creative play calls from previously used formations.

Kolb still played very well and I mean no disrespect. The kid has a really bright future, but right now, we have as good a chance in the NFC as anyone. We need to take full advantage of it. Hence why we go with Vick. He is an experienced NFL quarterback, and while that isn't a huge deal in September and October, it is in December and January. They are both playing at a similar level, so why not go with the guy who is more multi-dimensional and has much more experience.

I still think we keep Kolb and deal Vick as well going forward. Kolb is going to be a good NFL quarterback. There will be good days and bad days but in 4 games I've seen more from Kolb than I did from an early Eli Manning, or Matt Ryan, or Stafford. He can play at that level if not better. But we need to give him time to develop. Honestly, like someone posted here, you don't need to hate Kolb to like Vick and vice versa. However, I am an Eagles fan above being a Kolb or  Vick fan. I just want to win and see us play the best team available on Sunday.

Go Eagles.

Simbalicious_by_freeezok

kevin kolb is simba...with a mean streak. Inspired by this ridiculous USA Today preview.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb elicits the image of Simba, the cub from The Lion King, suddenly thrust to the head of the pride after the unexpected departure of longtime leader Donovan McNabb. And with plenty of hungry hyenas lurking in the NFC East — McNabb, now a hyena in Washington Redskins clothing and still among them — Kolb will have little time to adjust to his new role on the league's hotly contested 100-yard plains, and he knows it.

Bleeding Green Nation Looking forward to 2010

Well, all this training camp talk and the upcoming season have been making me think about one thing...

Revenge, and a big dose of it, to give to the cowboys. To say I was mad at the end of last season was an understatement. Any how, this also made me think of my favorite game I have ever watched as an eagles fan.

Eagles/Cowboys Game 44-6 (via CJC0988)

I mean this game speaks for itself. Romo getting killed, Dawkins was still an eagle, a healthy westbook (even though Buckhalter had a monster game) etc. Just a reminder to the way the world should be... with Romo on his back bleeding and the Eagles embarrassing the Cowboys.

Bleeding Green Nation Lebron in the nfl

If any of you check out espn as much as I do, you probably saw the Lebron in football column. It made me wonder what he would actually be in the NFL? TE? WR? I honestly think he would be an absolute beast on the outside, especially in the red zone. Not nfl speed, but rare athlete none the less. Even if this were a possibility, I still have concerns about speed and durability over the course of an nfl season.

44 inch Vertical leap

6'8" 250 pounds

Again, I feel he would never do this, but its the offseason.

Bleeding Green Nation State of the NFL

I was watching one of those NFL classics last night and it happened to be super bowl xxv between the Giants and the Bills and I couldn't help but wonder how modern ref's would have called this one.

For one, the qb's had balls (not that some don't now, but let's be serious). I could never see Brady or any other modern QB take some of the punishing hits Bruce Smith and LT were throwing. And I'm not talking sacks, I'm talking hits. If that game happened today do you know how many roughing the passer penalty's would have been called. The same goes for the battle between the d-backs and wr's. You would watch a wide out get completely crushed, and does he get up and whine? No. Does he bitch that the dback grabbed him more than 5 yards from scrimmage, NO.

It just stuck out to me how much football has changed, and not for the better. More and more often we watch as a ref or a stupid rule determines the outcome of the game, and more notoriously its future. Now with the OT rule change, I'm sick of this crap. I know the comish wants to protect his superstars, but it's gotten to the point where the game is diluted. I wanna see db's kick the shit out of wide receivers. I want to see Qb's take punishing hits and get back up like it was nothing. It's what made it a mans game, and what made the men who played it at the highest level champs. Seriously, I watched Jeff Hostetler get beaten to a bloody pulp, without a single call for roughness. And he kept getting back up, every single time. (Honestly it was like watching Jason Campbell try to take a snap, every snap)

The point I am trying to make is what makes the NFL great is a tradition of toughness and willpower that it takes to win. The old superstars of the nfl were great not only for their athletic ability but their ability to withstand brutal punishment and still make plays when needed. Just saying that as a society we've become to politically correct, and not let football be played to it's fullest extent.

Go Eagles

Bleeding Green Nation Offseason Wish List

OK first off, that Arizona Green Bay game was an absolute classic. If you even remotely like football that had to been one of the most exciting, dramatic and unpredictable games in years.

That said, here is my offseason wish list in no particular order. (Granted some smaller changes/signings are omitted because it doesn't matter so much)

1. Resign Weaver and Avant. Both are clutch playmakers, with a nose for making big plays. Simple enough.

2. Trade Vick for draft picks. Exciting experiment maybe, but we need to rebuild our d from the ground up. Vick can still start in this league and we should let him, and get picks for it.

3. Draft or Sign an elite pass rusher to help Trent Cole. When your best pass rusher is constantly getting double teamed he ceases to be a good pass rusher. Also Bunkley and Patterson are fine in the middle, we just need a force on the right side of the line. (Julius Peppers anyone or Richard Seymour, both hate their current situations and I bet with the right offer would love Philly)

4. Draft/ sign safeties, cornerbacks and MLB. I know stew's coming back, but as this year showed, depth is the most important aspect of sustaining long term success. I' d like to see us bring in a hard hitting down hill safety, another nickel corner (for the asante and sheldon haters, they are both lock-down corners and you can't have enough of these guys, EVER) As for the linebackers, keep stew in the middle, with Jordan and Spoon on the outsides. Possibly draft a OLB more akin to pass rushing as well. (think Brian Orakpo type)

5. Finally, the my favorite of them all, and probably what the eagles need most. A hard nosed, between the tackles running back. I love what shady brings to the table, but lets get serious. The last ten superbowl winners had a hard nosed running back. And Weaver (I'm sorry but it's true) is not the answer. We need a fast, built back akin to Shonne Green to pound the middle and wear out opposing D lines. Sorry but Weave isn't fast enough to break huge runs, and shady isn't big enough to intimidate the best D lines in the league.

Just my thoughts but I feel these are our most pressing needs, screw the qb talk. It really doesn't matter if you have a smash mouth d and a solid running game. WE had neither this year.

Bleeding Green Nation Matt Mosley = Hater

I've felt this way for a while but "the eagles taking needless risk with vick" article put me over the edge. Why doesn't he just run the cowboy blog on espn, because it seems thats all he ever writes about. Jerry this, Jerry that.

When it comes to the eagles, its more like constant doubting and here-say. Needless risk with vick, my ass. Does a 2 seed and a first round bye mean anything? I'm not sure if that would help at all in the playoffs? Sarcastic rant over, don't we need every able body today to help secure number 2. It only seems logical.

And Mosely, enough hate already. It's bad enough as is, so don't write trash to write trash. I'd rather nothing than some illogical argument.

Bleeding Green Nation Can we give Jackson a real nickname?

Ok after watching last night, DeSean needs a better nickname. I mean, "action" Jackson is nice but when you tie a guy who's name is "crazy legs" Hirsch, you deserve better?

That punt return was a thing of beauty. And that bomb from McNabb was just perfect.

Any thoughts?

I know I'm stealing this from somebody on here but it's sum's up Jackson perfectly. "We have a Number 1 receiver in philly, and we drafted him."

Suck on that Jerry Jones.
