Tennessee: The Girl Who Doesn’t Realize She’s Cute

It seems like just yesterday she was in high school with bad acne and thick glasses (Tennessee losing to Wyoming at home in 2008). But my, oh, my, look at her now. It really is amazing what a little Clearasil, contact lenses and Monte Kiffin’s defense did to her.

Much like the hot foreign exchange student, get in good with the this girl/Tennessee now. Do it before she realizes how good looking she is (and how hideous you are. Seriously would it kill you to put a little gel in your hair once in awhile?). More importantly, do it now, before the SEC Championships start rolling in.

Saw this linked on Roll Bama Roll, the whole article is pretty funny.

I’d like to harp on something Dr. Saturday had in his post this morning. First this from Urban Meyer…

“I remember looking out there and there's 10 minutes left in the game and there's no no-huddle (offense being run by UT), they are down by, I think it was 23-6 and the urgency ...” "... [W]e're not trying to impress the pollsters, we're trying to win the game. I think a lot of it had to do with the way they were playing. That made our life a little easier.''

Than this from the Doctor…

“Under most circumstances, that would be the obvious analysis. Where it concerns an offense quarterbacked by Jonathan Crompton, however, the connection between putting the ball in the air and winning becomes more tenuous: Crompton had already thrown one interception that led to a Gator field goal, and when the Vols did finally get aggressive -- running a deep stop-and-go on 4th-and-1 to keep a last-gasp drive alive -- it was picked off again. I wonder if Meyer considered that, sometimes, handing off is trying to win.”

I think the Doc hits the nail on the head in this. After the game a lot of rival message boards were saying that we were just trying to lose respectably, and cover the spread rather than trying to actually win the game. The problem with this assertion is that you have to realize you have to play with the hand you’re dealt. I think we were all in agreement that heading into this game our best chance to win would be to run the ball, play keep away and play tough defense. So suddenly when theres 10 minutes left in the game and we’re down by 17 our best chance to win is to have Jonathan Crompton run a pass happy no huddle offense and try to pick apart one of the best secondarys in the country? I think there is a far better chance that Montario Hardesty or Bryce Brown breaks free on a big run than Jonathan Crompton completes 6 consecutive passes in a 2 minute drill.

It’s like anything in life really. You recognize there are certain realities and you deal with them. Like it or not, there doesn’t appear to be a standout quarterback on this roster. Our coaching staff recognized that the best chance to move the ball would be to run it until we can run it anymore and then run it again. You can say they were just playing it safe but the fact is that with the backs we have and our defensive talent you can win football games this way. It’s obviously not an identity we want to have long term but with the way this staff recruits and the attitude and discipline they instill in our players, I love where we are headed.

So Urban Meyer can call it whatever he wants and say we made it easy for him. But the bottom line is this Tennessee team in its 3rd game with a new staff took your Juggernaut to the wire, knocked around your golden boy for 60 minutes in your own backyard, and you were relieved to take a knee and call it a day.

Dear Fans,

It's Time!

The start of the 2009 football season is finally here, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to play our first game inside Neyland Stadium. The excitement around the program is unbelievable! Our players and coaches have worked extremely hard this summer and in fall camp. As I said back in November, we will not be out-worked, and I still stand by that statement today.

Saturday’s season opener against Western Kentucky will be a landmark day for our entire program. I encourage everyone to come out early, enjoy the VolWalk and cheer loudly.

Part of what makes Tennessee so special is the fans. Your support, enthusiasm and excitement is contagious. Our coaches and players can feel it so join us for the Vol Walk at 10:35 beginning at the Torchbearer.

The weather forecast for sunny is 83 and partly sunny – perfect weather for football. If you don’t have tickets yet, check out www.uttix.com.

The Big Orange Nation is a team of one and I would like to ask each of you to help us show the rest of the college football world just how united we are. We are asking fans to create a "SEA OF ORANGE" in the stands of Neyland Stadium. The official 2009 Tennessee football t-shirt is on sale at your favorite Vol shop. Buy your shirt, wear it to the game and let’s create an event that none of us will soon forget.

If you are in town on Friday night, join the Pride of the Southland Band, the cheerleaders, and Smokey for the 3rd Annual Big Orange Blast pep rally and concert featuring country music star Sara Evans at World’s Fair Park.

Thanks for your support. I will see you at Neyland Stadium on Saturday!

Let’s Lock In. It’s Time!

Go Vols!

Twenty of the 31 days in July are set aside for NCAA coaches to "evaluate" prospects; the days are broken into two periods. The first period ran from July 6-15, and Pearl missed every moment of it, which could be damaging in terms of recruiting.

Lane Kiffin and Tennessee - Right Program, Right Fit?

A popular discussion that follows football prospects is whether or not they will fit a system. Whether or not they are truly a great talent or the system they play in just puts them in a place to succeed. We often wonder why such highly drafted players go to places and fade into relative obscurity while some players who had the same or less impressive measurables go to places and become perennial pro-bowlers. The point is the right situation has a huge impact on a player’s success.

Can a similar concept be used when we talk about coaches?

One point I found interesting that was noted back in December was that Lane Kiffin had zero interest in toning his coaching muscles at a mid major or DII school. However, he knew that if he wanted to be a head coach at a top level program he likely had to have “Head Coach” somewhere on his resume. This made his brief tenure with the Raiders crucial.

Lane Kiffin said on day one that his philosophy is to out-work your opponent. Based on that, I’m going to assume that Lane Kiffin isn’t going to blow our minds with brilliant offensive game plans or schemes. What will dictate his success is the players he brings in and how hard they condition and execute.

In theory this system shouldn’t work to great lengths at a mid major or some other lower tier program. I don’t mean that it can’t be successful; I just believe that it’s a philosophy that probably won’t succeed to the point that would get a coach noticed by the big boys. Why? At that level, it’s very difficult to recruit on an echelon that brings you a substantial advantage against your peers. No, recruiting isn’t everything. But in a system that relies heavily on conditioning and execution, it’s a very big thing. Point being, this system wouldn’t allow you to win big just anywhere. I think Lane Kiffin understood that in order to win big with this approach, you need to find the right program.

Having that said, Tennessee is the kind of place where you can make that kind of a system work. It has the name recognition, exposure, facilities, fan base, and most importantly the budget to bring in top talent both on the field and on the coaching staff. If you put the right people in the right places with the right preparation you can have big success.

Often times I think we undervalue the impact that being at the right program has on a coach’s success. What I mean by that is that there are very few coaches who can win big anywhere they go. Urban Meyer is a name that comes to mind based on his resume, but then again Steve Spurrier had that same perception at one point as well. Urban Meyer could very well go to Notre Dame and have a slew of 7-5 seasons (this scenario is on my Christmas wish list).

Based on what we’ve seen from Lane Kiffin’s recipe for winning, it doesn’t seem like a philosophy that would lead to great success in the NFL. The league is set up with a draft and salary cap rules that try to give the less successful franchises a chance to catch up. I think it’s safe to say that Al Davis showed poor judgment in hiring Kiffin two years ago. I think it’s also safe to say that without said poor judgment Lane Kiffin doesn’t get hired at Tennessee. However, one thing we know about Lane Kiffin is that he has a way of working the system, and he worked the system to a point that landed him a high profile job in a high profile league where his approach has the potential to bring big success. Let’s hope its the right place for him to succeed.
