Eric Byrnes’ 2007 Deal: A Contract Retrospective

7

Over at fangraphs Matt Klaassen takes a look at the Eric Brynes contract and whether it was really as bad as it seems in retrospect. The Eric Byrnes part really isn't as interesting though as the link to the chart they have showing the $$ value of a win in the 07 off-season prior to the economy crashing, when the fan favorite Luis Castillo was signed to a 4/24 contract. According to the chart, 4/24 was a reasonable contract for a player expected to contribute 2.0 WAR, in the two years prior Castillo had averaged 2.25 WAR, and as ugly as it was to watch him drop pop flys, he wasn't that far off from there last year. So if you ignore the fact that everyone and their grandmother could see he was out of shape and not the same player he had been just 3 years prior, on top of the bad knees, the Castillo deal may not have been as bad at the time as it looks now.

White Sox sends Ely, Link to Dodgers

1

Ely may be a little bit old for AA, and Link may not be more than a cheap bullpen option but that seems like a steep price for Pierre.

Halladay/Lee trade could be completed Wednesday and now Oaklands involved too?

1

NEW YORK (AP)—The blockbuster trade sending Roy Halladay(notes) to Philadelphia and Cliff Lee(notes) to Seattle could be completed Wednesday, and it’s become a four-team swap that involves Toronto shipping a prospect to Oakland. The Blue Jays would send Halladay and $6 million to the Phillies for three minor leaguers: catcher Travis d’Arnaud, right-hander Kyle Drabek and outfielder Michael Taylor. Philadelphia would also deal Lee to the Mariners for a trio of prospects: right-hander Phillippe Aumont, outfielder Tyson Gillies and right-hander Juan Ramirez. ADVERTISEMENT Toronto would then trade Taylor to the Athletics for third baseman Brett Wallace(notes), obtained by Oakland last July from St. Louis in the deal for outfielder Matt Holliday(notes).

Trade Winds Begin as Breeze

More rumors about the Mets interest in Johnson. According to the author the nats would want Parnell as part of the deal.

Since the calender turned to May, Mejia has been positively dominant: 0.43 ERA, 21 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 14 K, 2.00 GB/FB, .153 Opp Avg. Oops. Sorry about that, FSL. The 19-year old is now third in the league in ERA.

Toby Hyde from metsminorleagueblog I know it's a small sample size, but this kid is 19, he's only 4 days older than me which really weirds me out, and in high A ball, and what he's doing is just silly.

Perez will the a lefty specialist, and get some long relief work apparently.

Second Base is the New Third Base

I figured this applied to us since some of us, or maybe just me, are still holding out hope for Murphy to get a shot at second base.

Metsblog: Manuel Wants to See More of Gee

1

"Livan Hernandez will instead pitch in a minor-league intrasquad game, while right-handed pitching prospect Dillon Gee gets the start against the Marlins, because Jerry Manuel specifically requested to see more of him.' Not really big news but the fact that anyone, even if it's just our manager wants to see more of one of our young pitchers makes me happy. Especially because I'm a big Dillon Gee rooter.

Metsblog: Jerry Manuels Batting Order

14

"Prior to last night’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters Friday’s lineup will look a lot like the lineup he intends to use for Opening Day. In other words, Jose Reyes will hit leadoff, followed in order by Luis Castillo then David Wright, though Wright and Beltran may flip-flop around Carlos Delgado on certain days when a left-handed pitcher is on the mound. Meanwhile, though Daniel Murphy could eventually get at bats hitting second, he will start the year batting towards the bottom of the order, especially against left-handed starters, along with Ryan Church, who may also sit against lefties in favor of Fernando Tatis."

But now the momentum has shifted, with Evans projected to remain with the big-league club and Marlon Anderson in jeopardy, despite a $1.15 million guaranteed contract.

Adam Rubin now I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be in the best interest for Evans. But Marlon Anderson not making the team makes me giddy on the inside.
