Ed. Note: Easy bump. Excellent work, Correspondent Give Eddie A Beer. I think we owe you, uh, a beer. -- Ross

*This was the headline a few years back when Drew Tate participated in the infamous hay bale tossing competition. This year's competition once again saw Iowa Hawkeyes football notables trying their hand at the town's 41st annual Beef Days celebration. Matt Kroul returned to defend his 2011 victory, in which he set the record with a toss of 14'6''. Current MLB James Morris was the challenger, and each broke last year's record by 6", tossing bales 15' vertically. Kroul was the winner, setting a new record at 15'6'', the highest pin setting on their beam poles (I have no idea what those things are called, but I'm going with beam poles).

I was in attendance with my wife, whose shins were struck by one of Morris's hay bales. It turns out that when you throw a hay bale 15 feet in the air, it tends to roll a decent distance after it lands. After the jump are a few of the better photos we took. There is also a good local news video recap here, and additional photos here.

James Morris. Everyone that had any success at all used the shot put style toss.

Matt Kroul. Both Morris and Kroul's tosses looked pretty effortless until the last few feet up the beam poles.

Getting a little higher up...

On the left pole you can see a small flag on one of the upper pins. That was the old record. Kroul tossed over the very top pin on Friday night for the new record of 15'6".

Matt Kroul, throwing a bale so hard that it changes shape and nearly combusts. This throw would've been for 16', but he did not make it.

1st place Kroul in yellow, 2nd place Morris in the middle. Drew Tate is injured, and could not participate.

It took me a month, but I finally got around to scanning the Iowa Men's basketball trading cards. I was able to get these at the home game against Michigan in January. Some points about the cards, then the images after the jump.

The cards came printed on one sheet of the same glossy paper/cardboard that the football season tickets are printed on, and each card is perforated. Sixteen players were included, and the back of each card lists their favorite things. This is basically a semi-creepy look into each player's personal preferences, including favorite snacks, tv shows, and websites, music. Brommer and McCabe apparently have multiple favorites in each category. That kind of showboating would have no place on an Iowa Hawkeyes football trading card.

I apologize for the quality, as my scanner is of the POS variety. Players are ordered by jersey number.

Similar to the 2008 Penn State game in which the student section wore green in support for Shonn Greene, it appears that once again there is a movement to show support by wearing green, this time for Brett Greenwood.
The Number 24, I am not superstitious

I am not superstitious, but when the Hawks are 7-0 and in the top 10, I don't have a choice but to be superstitious. I got to thinking about the way the season has been going, and have been hearing from my dad about how comparable things have been between this season and the 1985 season (beating Michigan by 2 points...) So that got be thinking, 1985 was 24 years ago, the last time we started a season with so many wins without any losses. I happen to be 24 years old, and coincidentally, my dad was 24 years old in 1985. But it goes back farther than 1985, and here is what I've pieced together:

My dad was born in the summer of 1961. That fall, Iowa was preseason number 1 in the nation, and remained there for 4 straight weeks, beating USC, Cal, and Wisconsin (Iowa also beat Notre Dame 42-21 that season) before ending up losing 4 conference games that year. But we WERE number 1 for 4 weeks.

24 years later... I was born the summer of 1985, a season where Iowa was ranked number 1 for 5 straight weeks and went to the Rose Bowl, beat Michigan by 2 points in "the Game". My dad was 24 years old.

and 24 years later... I am now 24 years old, Iowa is 7-0, top 10, beat Michigan by 2. We haven't been # 1 yet this season, but as I was told by EA Sports NCAA Football 2010, "stranger things have happened in college football". I'm hoping our # 1 doesn't come until the conclusion of the season, and if it doesn't happen, I am pretty sure the universe will explode. Superstition? No, it's just a cycle that started before the dawn of man, which was 1961 (don't bother looking up 24 years prior to 1961, it didn't happen, and Iowa didn't only win 1 game that year)

Oh, and just for good measure, Elisha Cuthbert is one hott blond Canadian, and she was in that show called "24".

BELIEVE ME NOW????
