Hypothetically speaking - Husker game and Bama

After watching parts of the College Football Awards show last night and a handful of references made to players that used to play both sides of the ball......

I'm just curious what everybody else thinks about whether Texas should/could have used our defensive linemen (esp. Kindle and Houston) on offense against the Huskers. And should/could we use them against Bama (T. Cody).

Now let me say I know it won't happen - Mack and GD won't use these guys on offense. This is more about what do YOU think.

I'm not saying they should have played the entire 60 minutes (off & def), but maybe a couple downs here and there at least for some certain packages. And I'm not criticizing the offensive linemen (although they do need some improvement), but I can't help but think "maybe, just maybe Kindle and Houston could have held Suh in check - at least some of the time - to help give McCoy more time for specific plays."

Do you think it could work (Bama) or could have worked (NU)?? I know there is also some risk of injury to those guys for playing so much, but here's a real kicker - against NU, maybe Kindle and Houston only needed to play on offense. There certainly wasn't much to fear from the Husker offense - the rest of the guys would have performed just fine.

Let the coaching carousel begin...

After reading that ridiculous garbage from Texags in today's (11/16) Roundup about A&M luring Mack away, I started to think about possible coaching changes across the country.

RichRod at Michigan - probably safe for another year, but will feel some heat and need to get the ship corrected.

Sherman - same as RichRod....safe for another year, but better crank it up.

Zook at Illinois - most likely gone, but who could they get? Illinois isn't a high profile gig. They probably go after some up-and-comer like Gill currently at Buffalo.

Weis - the top brass at ND has the arrogance to think if they simply call up a candidate, that guy will come running, regardless of when ND makes the call. In other words, if they get rid of Weis, they better get going: Kelly at Cincy will most likely want to coach their bowl game and that goes for Urban Meyer and Stoops too (assuming they have any interest at all). I'm just saying any high profile coach will probably want to guide their team through the bowl game. So if ND waits until the bowl season is going or over, they may not get their man. Not to mention the very few potential openings could create a high demand for someone like Kelly.

Colorado - you have to think Hawkins is gone if they can figure out the financial fiasco of paying him off and luring someone else in. And because of the financial problems they most likely go after someone like Gill or Kevin Sumlin at Houston - someone they can "afford." I could see them going after Kelly, but I think he's going to request more than they can afford, knowing Kelly will be in demand.

I can't think of any other potential openings. I think the Pac-10 coaches are probably secure; Big 10 is probably set aside from Zook; Big 12 is fine aside from CU; same goes for SEC unless Spurrier decides to hang it up. What does everyone think??

K-State or Neb - who do you want?

At this point it looks like Nebraska or K-State will win the North. Who do you want Texas to play and why?

Initially I had some concern if Texas were to play Nebraska (because of their defense). I think the Husker D-line is scary and could cause a lot of problems for the Texas O-line and offense (esp. since our run game is average at best).

But then I started reviewing the OU stats against Nebraska:

- OU had 23 first downs (Neb had 7)

- Total yards 325 OU (245 passing), 180 Neb (39 passing)

- OU 80 yds rushing (2.9 per attempt), Neb 141 (3.3 per att)

- OU 9 penalties for 64 yards, 5 turnovers (all INT's), Neb 11 penalties for 104 yds, 1 TO

Obviously the killer for OU was the 5 TO's - the biggest TO being the int thrown deep in OU territory and Neb only had to go 3-5 yards or whatever it was. OU had no problem throwing the ball (unless you count the INT's).

Texas' defense could handle the Nebraska offense much like OU did (or maybe even better than OU). I don't think the Neb defense could handle Colt and the passing game.

Now the ineptitude of GD is what scares me - especially if the game is tight and Texas isn't able to capitalize. K-State causes some concern just because they (and Bill Snyder) seem to thrive in this type of atmosphere. I like the chance for Colt and the team to get some redemption for the past two meetings.

So who do you want to play and why?

Mock BCS talk between Fla, Bama, Tex, Iowa

A friend (and graduate of Iowa) sent me this link....

http://isportsweb.com/2009/10/28/behind-the-hallowed-walls-of-the-bcs/

While this is a satirical view from a Hawkeye's point of view, it does have some truth in pointing out yet another flaw of the BCS.

I also want to point out something about Bama's schedule and Iowa's schedule.... (as of Friday 11/6)

The overall record of Bama's opponents is 33 and 33. The overall record of Iowa's opponents is 44 and 31.

Bama has had 6 home games and 2 road games (Kentucky & Ole Miss). Iowa has had 6 home games and 3 road games (Penn St, Wisconsin, Mich St).

I'm not trying to start a debate and I'm sure there are a ton of statistics that would point to a favorable view for any team to make the championship game. I'm just saying the media and so-called "experts" assume Bama and/or Florida is/are the better team(s) just because it's the SEC. And that Iowa is "weaker" because they win ugly and the past failures of the Big 10.

I think we should stop making assumptions and I wish some changes would be made to the overall system. Would Iowa be ranked higher than Bama if they were ranked higher to start the season?? Would Iowa be ranked higher if the Coaches hadn't dropped them out of the rankings after they beat Arizona??

Just sayin'.........

Missouri game 10/24 - ticket /section ??

I've waited too long to acquire tickets for the Missouri game. I'm looking on various websites and I'm confused on which section the Horns fans will be sitting. I've seen some indicate it's Section T - north (?) endzone next to the grassy/hill area. But I've also seen it will be the numbered sections in the SW endzone - like 1-8.

It doesn't really bother me to sit amongst the Tiger fans but thought if the right seat and right price ticket was available, I would rather sit with my own kind.

Anybody have their tickets in hand that can tell me?

Thanks

Nice to see Stoops pull out his security blanket last night - scoring 60+ points.

I know nothing about the game other than the score, but can't help of thinking that he reached the 60 point plateau just to help console his image / respect for his team.

I know it was Idaho St and the defense & special teams probably had more than their share of opportunities to contribute. (Again I don't know any of the stats or what happened.)

I would hope that at least by the mid-3rd qtr Stoops put in the 80 yr old equipment manager, the honorary 6 yr old ball boy, the 110 pound statistician, the girls on the athletic training staff, and JR (the WWE announcer). Yes, it's the defenses responsibility to stop the offense, but I find it hard to believe Stoops didn't let off the pedal......no wait, yes I can believe it.

Looking for a football fix got me wondering about some of my favorite former Horns. What ever happened to these guys / what are they doing now??

James Brown - last I remember he was with the Wranglers (??)

Wane McGarity - since the Cowboys......??

Aaron Humphrey (had a motor - just think what he could have done under Muschamp)

Sloan Thomas (I've always thought he should have redshirted his first year - would have been a standout after Roy and BJ)

From CollegeFootballNews.com....

* Oklahoma recruit Justin Chaisson, a defensive end out of Las Vegas, is on the defensive after being charged with four felony counts: coercion by force, assault with a deadly weapon, coercion with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment to avoid arrest. Chaisson allegedly punched his girlfriend in the ribs and placed a screwdriver to her neck and threatened to kill her. Violent charges like these are no laughing matter - Chaisson and the Sooners could really be screwed.
