Former Bruin Coach Larry Brown to Coach at SMU

+

From the article: The 71-year-old Brown, the only coach to win an NBA championship and an NCAA title, hasn't coached since leaving the Charlotte Bobcats in December 2010 after the team's 9-19 start. His contract there was to run through the end of the current season. His four-decade coaching career began at Davidson in 1972, though he didn't coach a game there before going to the ABA and then the NBA. He coached at UCLA (1979-81) and Kansas (1983-88) and was the coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team that had a disappointing bronze-medal finish.

Let's get a good crowd to support our Bruins and Coach Al Scates for all he has done for UCLA! Coach Scates is in his 50th and final year coaching Men's Volleyball and going for his 20th NCAA Championship this year. We are in the postseason and our first match is vs. UCI at UCI 7pm. UCI is #4 and we are the #5 seed. A big crowd can make all the difference. Tix are only $10 + $2 fee. Hope to see you there! Link for tix: Link from NCAA about Coach Scates:

Swiss Cheese Theory

I’m sure its been brought up before, but often when something goes wrong (i.e. we are beat by a St John’s team playing without a head coach and made up of almost all freshman), there are usually...

What's Wright At UCLA

1

Yes, something to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving day. Adam Wright, makes Bruins like me proud again, as he is not only the head coach of our 20-4 Men's Water Polo team which plays in the MPSF tourney this weekend, but also playing and training on the US National Team. That's in addition to his other job of being daddy to his 2 yo daughter with another on the way! So, yes, I'm thankful that as Bruins, even when our 2 headliner sports are languishing, we have so many other non-revenue sports to lift us up! (see also Women's Volleyball, Women's Basketball, etc)

Leadership - By the players, For the players

This is the topic of a post I have been thinking about doing over a lot over the last 24 hours.  I totally agree that we do not have enough leadership over either of our football or basketball...

Go Bullfrogs! UCLA was highlighted on Modern Family this past week!

+

Thought this was one of the highlights of the week for the Bruin family... (especially after all of the 'lowlights' we had, it kinda lifted me up). I think this show is hilarious so I was ecstatic to see that they filmed in Westwood!

Great Article on Former UCLA Defensive Tackle Brian Price

2

Actually a surprisingly good article by the LA Times about the struggles Brian Price has faced since being drafted by the Tampa Bay Bucs #35th overall, including going through 2 surgeries and, with the help and support of his wife and family, has endured TONS of pain to get back to play earlier than people expected and earn a start in this Sunday's game vs. Minnesota. Although we miss him at UCLA, its great to hear how his will and determination continue to make us proud! Best of luck on Sunday and throughout the season Brian!

Great Article by Gold on Cassius Marsh

Interesting article with back story including how his mom wanted him to go to LSU and he wisely chose UCLA and has decided to stick with it and really buy into the system this year.

Pics and Clips of Shabazz, Kyle and More From the Boost Mobile 24 All Star Game

Some pictures and clips of UCLA recruits Shabazz Muhammad, Kyle Anderson and more from the Boost Mobile 24 All Star Game

FREE Chance to See Shabazz, Kyle, Brandon and Other UCLA Basketball Recruits in Venice Beach on Saturday!

3

HT to zigggzzz for the fanshot where I found out about this... THIS EVENT IS FREE! The Boost Mobile Elite 24 game will be tomorrow (Sat) in Venice Beach featuring Shabazz Muhammad, Kyle Anderson, and Brandon Ashley, 3 of UCLA's top recruits for 2012. Also, Kevin Love will be there as well as other stars such as Kemba Walker, John Wall and more (as assistant coaches). Oh, and the head coach of the "Marques Johnson" team is Grant Rice, the head coach of Bishop Gorman HS, where Shabazz is attending currently. Here is the Facebook site as well: Its a good time for Bruin supporters to show these recruits some love! And if anyone is able to go, pics/video are always appreciated as well. Tipoff is 4pm, but of course they recommend getting there early to get seats, parking, etc. Here is the address from the Facebook site: 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice, Calif.

K Love At Manhattan Beach Open This Week

+

I didn't see this posted yet so... Apparently Kevin Love continues his ventures into beach volleyball during the lockout. There is a nice video interview as well in which Kevin talks about 'getting his sand legs' and getting ready for the tournament. Good luck Kevin!

Blake Arnet NOT Returning For 2011-2012 Season

6

Per Jon Gold, he posted it on his Facebook page, although I cannot confirm that since only his FB friends can see his post. Per Gold's post, Arnet wrote: "won't be back playin ball next yr, not having fun with it.. will miss parts of it but it's time to move on - u can catch me on the ping pong table doin work!"

Not much new info to many here on BN, but may interest people nonetheless...

UCLA Golfer Patrick Cantlay Tees Off in US Open Thursday

4

Nice article in the front page of the Sports section of the OC Register (Patrick Cantlay hails from Servite HS in Orange County). From the article: "It's something so difficult to achieve that Tiger Woods couldn't pull it off. Neither could Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer. And in golf, it's hard to get much better than that. A first-time participant has won just five of the 110 U.S. Opens, and the last time it happened was 1913." The article also mentions that Patrick is intent on staying all 4 years at UCLA to get his degree, which is great to hear as well!

UCLA's Freshman Golfer Patrick Cantlay wins National Player of the Year

+

From the UCLA website: Cantlay becomes the first UCLA golfer to win the award since Kevin Chappell won it in 2008, and he joins Chappell, Corey Pavin (1982) and Duffy Waldorf (1985) as the only UCLA golfers to win National Player of the Year honors. He also became the first golfer to win both National Player of the Year and National Freshman of the Year in the same season.

Ouch! Now ALL of the Assistant Coaches Are Leaving with Coach Caldwell...

24

From the article: Caldwell said her assistants at UCLA -- Stacie Terry, Tony Perotti and Tasha Butts -- would also be joining her in Baton Rouge. That means UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero has to replace an entire staff. I'd say this could affect the continuity of the team and what CNC built here at UCLA.

Women's Gymnastics Wins Regional to Advance to NCAA Championships

2

I thought we could use some good news... Congrats to our Women's Gymnastics team, who won #105 on the UCLA NCAA Championship list last year, and continue to represent the Bruins proudly! They soundly beat out the perennial powerhouse Georgia (and others) at home to advance to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland on April 15-17.

#SFatPauley: Use Facebook to Show Your Displeasure of the Student Section in New Pauley

17

You can post your displeasure on the UCLA Athletics Facebook page. Click on the link above and share your thoughts. I just posted! Let's flood the page with how we feel! Update (BN Eds): Comments from BNers are already flooding UCLA Athletics' Facebook page. Please pile on by going to the link above. Update 2 (BN Eds): UCLA athletics just posted an update saying "Thanks for the feedback Bruins. Your comments have been forwarded to the appropriate individuals," and then they bumped all of your comments off their frontpage. This is a clear attempt to shove the comments and not paying any attention to it. If you have not shared your feedback yet, make sure you keep piling on. Don't stop.

Pauley Ends With A Sweep! - UCLA Over UCI In Men's Vball

1

Congrats to our #7 ranked Men's Volleyball team in ending our time in "Old Pauley" on a GREAT note with a 3-0 sweep over the #5 ranked UCI team. Fantastic win!!

This Thursday - Last Chance To See "Old Pauley" at Men's Volleyball Game

+

I think its fitting that the final event in "Old Pauley" is a Men's Volleyball game. They have brought the most NCAA Championships to the Hills of Westwood - a whopping 19 of our 106! It'll be a good match-up between #7 UCLA vs. #5 UCI this Thursday, March 24th. First match starts at 7pm. Hopefully, there will be a big crowd to support them and send them out. Fans will be allowed to take pictures on Nell and John Wooden Court after the match.

UCLA 2011 Home Football Schedule Announced

19

From the UCLA Site: Here is our home schedule: Sept. 10 - San Jose State Sept. 17 - Texas Oct. 8 - Washington State Oct. 29 - California Nov. 5 - Arizona State Nov. 19 - Colorado Apparently, we will also be playing at Arizona on a nationally televised game on Thursday, October 20th on ESPN.

Maybe Someday Lavin Will Work the Concession Stands...

2

Article from tWWL about Lavin coming back to Westwood... hopefully, he'll get the proper welcome from the alums, even if the students don't remember him...

Bruins Sign JUCO Linebacker Ryan Hofmeister

+

Seems like he has solid fundamentals on the one youtube video I glanced at. Interesting side note, I guess his Juco coach was Tom Craft, father of none other than former Bruin QB Kevin Craft.

Brett Hundley - "I'm not a Savior"

19

Nice article on Brett Hundley by Jon Gold. He does sound like a leader... already influencing recruits and I really like the way he seems to have committed to being a Bruin.
