Earl Thomas and the Thorpe Award

I was looking over the Thorpe Award watch list and noticed a few things.

1) Earl Thomas is listed as the only Soph. on the list

2) There aren't a lot of big name players on that list (Eric Berry, Taylor Mays, and Perrish Cox). Earl and the other 3 mentioned are probably going to be the finalists.

3) Seems like they left a name off - Rahim Moore UCLA Soph (7 INT's -t1st nationally, 12 Passes Defended -3rd nationally)

I know the Heisman doesn't like to give it's award to Soph. (Tebow and Bradford may have broken that sterotype for good) but how does the Thorpe Award trend with this? I looked at the past winners of the Thorpe and didn't see classifications tied to the winners. At any rate, I know I'm biased, but I just don't see how Earl Thomas doesn't win this award this year. Here's why:

Eric Berry - Very solid defender, hard hitter, but plays for a bad Tennessee team. The way I see it is Tenn doesn't play well enough for the QB's to test him all that much. Why test the best player on their team? For that reason, he doesn't get much of an opportunity to show his abilities. His stats support that. 7 Passes defended - t75th nationally and 1 interception (he had 7 in 2008 and 5 in 2007). Although, he does have 57 total tackles. But isn't that more indicative of his teams poor performance? I don't know.

Taylor Mays - 55 total tackles. That's pretty solid, but he hasn't really done anything else.

Perrish Cox - After watching him, I'm really not that impressed. He played really well on Special Teams against us and UGA, but strictly from a defensive back perspective, I really came away unimpressed. Although, he is tied with Earl Thomas for 1st nationally for Passes Defended (with playing 1 less game). Other than that, 24 tackles (5 assisted) and 1 INT.

Earl Thomas - Tied for 1st nationally with passed defended, 3rd nationally with 6 INT's, and 2 are returned for TD's (only 1 other player in the top 10 has that many - Leon Wright of Duke). But, ouch, only 27 total tackles. 1 Forced Fumble.

I know I'm biased, but his resume is quite impressive. Anyone know when they'll announce the finalists?

Shocking news... Lou Holtz is an idiot

Yes, the bumbling idiot strikes again. This time, he picks Notre Dame to play in the title game against Florida. Really? To his defense, he doesn't suggest that Notre Dame is the #2 team in the country, just that they have the easiest schedule. Their only true test will come against #4 USC, who, lets be honest, probably gets their ranking on name this year.

However, in the same interview, he said that OU (sucks) should be ranked ahead of Texas because OU's schedule is harder than Texas'. OK, I can understand that logic, and if someone were to make that arguement with me, I'd be accepting. After all, they'll settle it on the field. But he uses the same logic that he dismisses Texas with to trump up ND. It's hard enough to understand the man speak, much less understand his thought process. Can't ESPN do better than this?

Extended hiatus' suck. Plain and simple. I need to get back into the swing of things. Apparently there was an OU troll and I missed it? {*kicks self*} What else have I missed? Any really good threads I should be reading? I mean, has anything come close to the level of the Scott Ware threads? Can that even happen?

And, I'm so sorry, PHF, but I've lost track of all recruiting. I feel so lost.

Anyway, good to be back. Can't wait to discuss some more with the old faces (names) and get to know some of the new ones.

I've been away for quite some time, and I gotta say, it's good to be back! I missed you guys. I can't wait to get involved in some of the discussions again and get to know some of the new members as well as get some discussions with some of the old timers (I'm talking to you, PHF and 54b).

It may take me a few days to get caught back up. As far as the sight goes (I've been keeping up with the 'Horns) what have I missed?

All of us have a mancrush on someone. Don't deny it, you know you do. Who is it?

This morning, on Mike and Mike (ESPN radio, bleh), it was mentioned that Derek Jeter has been romantically liked to 6 of the Maxim Hot 100 (I'm at work, no link). I have to say: Shortstop for the Yankees (even though I hate the Yankees), Bachelor in a jungle of women (though the majority aren't up to par with Texas Women), and then there's the whole 6% of the MH100, I may be developing a mancrush on Derek Jeter.

But I have to say, that Sherrod Harris is my Longhorn Mancrush. Dude is just cool. I haven't met him, but every single person that I've heard that has, says he is an awesome person. I truly hope nothing but the best for that young man. If he succeeds on the gridiron, I may just shed a tear for him. Much love, Sherrod. Keep up the great work and making The University of Texas fanbase proud to call you a Horn.

I'll be the first to admit: I know next to nothing about basketball. I know that the ball goes in the hoop and it counts for either 1, 2 or 3 points. I know what traveling, charging, blocking, and goaltending are. I know a lot of the basics, but don't know anything about match-ups, strengths, weaknesses, or schemes.

So, to you basketball educated, what is your score for tonight?

So, I know a lot of you are lawyers and I promised a buddy of mine I would ask you legal types. Basically, he's going through a messy divorce. This has been going on since mid-late last year and he dropped her from his insurance because she cheated on him, left him, and said she was going to file the divorce papers.

She did leave him, but kept the money he gave her to file the paperwork (I know, dumb move. I told him as much).

Anyway, when she left, she moved to Denton county. Skip ahead several months and she has now finally filed the paperwork. But she is telling my buddy that she is going to take him to court because she wants to remain on his insurance. Either that or he has to "co-sign" a loan for her to have some dental work done. Everyone in their right mind knows she is not going to pay the loan so he would be responsible for it.

I kind of skipped around a little, but in Denton County you cannot drop your spouse from insurance if divorce papers have been filed. The problem with her claim is that he dropped her before the papers were filed.

All that to ask this: Does she have a case against him? If she does, he is just going to suck up the $850 for the dental work. If she doesn't, he's going to tell her to go f*** herself.

Keeping all of this in mind, his current girlfiend is now pregnant and $850.00 is not chump change he can throw around. So it's not like some of you rich types where that much money is dispensible.

Thank you for your patience in me for this. I know we try to keep this related to sports, but I know this to be a great and knowledgable community.

PB, if you feel this is too iffy and need to delete this thread I'll understand.

Why Texas NEEDS DS

And I'm not referring to the obvious: his talent. No, there is far more to this thing than just Scott's talent. With a greater impact than his talent alone can accomplish.

Texas needs to land Darrell Scott for a number of reasons. Sure, he's talented, but signing him would do as much for the program now as Vince Young did when he signed. Maybe more.

Before you throw me into the "dhab" category, first, check my UID. #10 bitches!! Second, this may give Mack the confidence, desire, determination, or whatever it is that you want to call it, to actually go after these high profile 5* OOS guys late in the recruiting season. So many have been begging Mack to at least give some effort to these guys. Well, it's looking very good that this effort is paying off with Scott.

Move forward to the 2009 class. Imagine for a moment if you will.... QB - Russell Shepard handing off to RB - Darrell Scott, running behind our seasoned O-line?!! Vince had a very good RB duo in Jamaal and Selvin, but neither were considered the RB that Scott is coming out of High School. I guess you could consider a tandem like that similar to if Adrian Peterson had chosen the good guys.

Could be exciting times on the horizon.

Special Teams - Blocked Kicks

Cheesehorn's diary got me thinking. Yes, the kick return is a problem. Why has nothing been mentioned about the effort we are not giving on Blocking kicks this year? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember a single block this year. Much is made of how Texas leads the nation since 2000 in blocked kicks, but NONE?!!

Whenever I post a diary, I try to be thoughtful, so I tried to counter my arguement:

We don't have Brian Robison or Michael Griffin anymore.

So? Yeah, they blocked a lot, but they weren't here since 2000. Where's the drop off?

It could be a coaching philosophy. We don't know why they aren't blocking kicks

True, this could be a change in philosophy. But Mac Duff was supposed to be this Special Teams Wizard. I'm not seeing it.

Teams could be aware that we have an exceptional kick blocking unit and are taking steps to prevent the blocked kicks.

We're not even attempting to block kicks! We can't block them if we don't try.

What am I missing? Why have we not only not blocked a kick, but it appears that we are not even trying?

Confirmed Dreads sighting

A few weeks ago, someone mentioned that we had a definite lack of dread power. I said at the time that Jamaal Charles was growing them but didn't have anything to back it up. The Statesman has a slideshow of some pictures from the voluntary workouts.

Jamaal's dreads are looking totally bad ass. By the time his Sr. year rolls around, he should have them hanging out of the helmet (and maybe by the end of the Jr. year).

Colt is looking big. I can't wait to see him and the WR's on the field this year. The Heisman should be a serious thought.
