Hell of a week, gentlemen

We don't say thank you enough.  But this is all a hell of a lot of work.  The clips threads require someone to read dozens of articles and pick the best ones, usually in the very early...

Anyone going to MSG Thursday night? I'm unexpectedly going to be able to catch the game in person (might by my only live Caps game this year). I haven't even bought my ticket yet. Anyone else in NYC want to get together and maybe share a beer?

Ranking the 1974-1975 Capitals: #1

The Ranking the Caps series was so much fun, I think it'd be fun to rank all the Capitals throughout history, year by year, starting with the first year.  Hockey Reference lists 42 players who...

Battle of Esoterica – Hockey Rate Stats Poll

Let me start out by saying that I know this is a freaking novel.  But it’s the middle of the offseason, and what else have we got to do?  And I think the issue is important.  Even if you just skim...

Lines Fun, Starring Mike Knuble

So it's our Deity-granted right as hockey fans to speculate wildly about lines whenever our team signs a new forward.  And the nice thing about being fans of a Boudreau-coached team is that almost...

Solving That Second Line Center Problem

I've been giving a lot of thought to the second line center position, which I think is the team's most glaring need this offseason.  Here are some players who I think could be reasonably available...

Landon Ferraro's Nickname

Landon Ferraro.  Son of a pretty good hockey player.  Tarik thinks Landon could be coming to DC.  Of course, that could be the usual McPhee disinformation.  But one thing is sure -- Ray Ferraro...

Guide to the offseason

It’s going to be a long offseason: shorter than it’s been for many years, but still longer than we’d like.  We’re all going to speculate wildly about what the team should do.  So here is, I...

Here's to letting go of the pain

The Caps have never won the Cup. The Caps do not have the single, uniting, defining moment that the fans of most teams can point to.  That one day when we were on top of the world. Locally, even...

Pittsburgh Puts Yanni Above Hockey

Backup Goalie CONTROVERSY

It's all about winning four of seven

Winning the Stanley Cup is relatively simple:  All you have to do is win four games out of every seven in the playoffs.  With that in mind, I thought I'd look at the top cup contenders and check,...

Tarik on Flash

5

Linked to Tarik's story on Flash. Seems to me like Flash has had a goal taken away by the officials and/or missed an empty net in about 2/3 of the games in 2009. So how much of this is Tomas being snakebitten, and how much is it poor play?

Hooking

Reach around and hook someone you love, because Interference-Is-Legal day has come again! Every spring, right around six weeks after groundhog day, the NHL rules change overnight and the referees put their whistles where the s... in their pockets. No announcement is made, but the signs are clear for those who know how to read them. So if you see a speedy forward dump the puck in the corner and go after it, squash him against the boards up near the circle. It's OK! (Just don't leave your feet or go after his head -- those are still penalties)

Where is Bob Gould now?

1

The Official has done a short retrospective on Bob Gould. With my screen name, I would be remiss if I let this one slip by without a comment. Gould to me was everything a hockey player should be. He played with sandpaper, but he also produced some offense. He's best remembered now for a single punch, but I always saw him as part of the foundation of those mid-80s teams. You didn't think of him all that much while he played, but you really missed him when he was out. The one word I associate with Gould is "respect." He earned it from his teammates, opponents and fans. A class act.
