Choosing A Theme Song For The 2010-11 Phoenix Suns

The game of basketball is a game of rhythm. At its best, it has a flow and grace to it much like music does.

The Phoenix Suns, since 2004, have played the game of basketball like a symphony with Mike D'Antonio and Alvin Gentry as the composers and Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire as the accomplished musicians.

This year, the composer may be the same, but they've re-arranged the orchestra.

The question is, what song will best represent the 2010-11 incarnation of the Phoenix Suns?

When putting the question out on Twitter, fans had some very interesting suggestions. Songs like, "How's it Gonna Be?" by Third Eye Blind, "Down Together" by The Refreshments, "Daddy Wasn't There" from Austin Powers and the obligatory "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.

While they were all good suggestions, they didn't quite capture what I think the 2010-11 NBA schedule has in store for the Suns.

The only song that seems to do this year's team justice is "The Same Old Song" by the Four Tops.

If you're not familiar with the song -- you probably haven't ever listened to an oldies station -- here's a little taste of the lyrics:

It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone
It's the same old song
But with a different meaning
Since you been gone

Precious memories keep a lingering on
Everytime I hear our favorite song
Now you're gone
Left this emptiness
I only reminisce

The Suns may be playing the same style of basketball, but without Amare Stoudemire, the meaning will be much different.

Gone are the days of competing for a title and back are the days of 45-to-55 wins and an early playoff exit (if they're lucky). There is an emptiness at power forward that Amare created when he left for New York (and sorry, there is no way a 6'10" shooting guard can fill it). Fans are just left to reminisce about what might have been and the championship runs that were cut short.

It's not an optimistic outlook, but then again, it's not a horrible one, either. The Suns will be the team they've been for most of their existence, good but not quite good enough. The ride will be fun, like most of the Suns' 42 seasons have been, but it will end in a tragic manner because it's the same old song just a little different meaning since Amare will be gone.

Arizona Cardinals Max Hall And Beanie Wells Can't Stop The Gathering Storm Clouds

Undrafted rookie Max Hall could be the starter for the Arizona Cardinals when they take on the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints Sunday at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Let that sink in.

Like many people, I'm not quite sure how to feel about that or about the overwhelming amount of fan support the possible move seems to have. As a matter of fact, I've been trying to put my feelings into words since fans began flocking to Hall during the preseason.

Luckily this afternoon, mother nature provided the answer.

As the rain began to come down in the East Valley it became clear, Cardinals fans infatuations with Max Hall is a lot like Arizonans' infatuation with monsoon thunderstorms.

People constantly talk about needing rain because of a current drought and how it will help. They are really excited to see a thunderstorm and have it live up to expectations. While it's raining, people try to stay positive but complain about some of the consequences that come with them being there.

In the end, the problem is, monsoons just create a mess that has to be cleaned up once they're done.

Right now the Cardinals are a mess and Max Hall starting at quarterback isn't the solution. Like the thunderstorms, he'll just cause more mess and won't fix the problem in the desert.

I'm not saying he isn't the answer in the future --although, I once thought Jake Plummer was the answer, so what the hell do I know-- but that future most certainly isn't now.

If things weren't bad enough with the prospect of an undrafted rookie starting for the Cardinals, another storm is brewing.

Beanie Wells decided on Monday to let the media and fans know he isn't happy about his current playing time (a move that worked out oh so well for Matt Leinart).

"It's tough to be a guy, to be on the sideline that wants to play," Wells said Monday. "No discredit to Tim [Hightower] - Tim's a great football player, but I hate sitting on the sideline watching, not really be out there contributing to the team."

Not so bad, until you read what he said a few seconds later.

"It's crazy," he said, "I have no clue what they're thinking upstairs - I'd like to know."

And many of us are wondering the same thing about Beanie.

What's the point of voicing displeasure with playing time after a 41-10 loss? What's going on upstairs when you decide to do it while your team is in the midst of a quarterback controversy? I'd like to know.

The worst part is Beanie Wells complaining and the controversy between Max Hall and Derek Anderson --which is like choosing between Luc Longley and Hot Rod Williams for best Suns center-- isn't even the tip of the iceberg. The Cardinals defense is in disarray and their offensive line couldn't block a pop up ad let alone an opposing defense.

The Cardinals have a complete mess on their hands right now and the storm clouds of negativity are gathering within the fan base. The problem is, unlike Arizona's summer monsoon storms, this won't pass quickly. This is going to be a long one and Max Hall starting at quarterback or Beanie Wells getting more touches won't make it clear up any faster.

The Dirty Birds Versus The Red Birds: A Week 2 Preview With TheFalcoholic.com

With the Arizona Cardinals second game of the season a day away, we caught up with Dave from SB Nation's The Falcoholic blog to get a perspective on the game from Atlanta. Dave was kind enough to provide his expertise and answer five questions about what to expect from the Falcons as they try to improve from their week 1 loss to the Steelers.

1) What was the biggest thing you learned about the Falcons in week 1's overtime loss to the Steelers?

I learned that we're not there yet. The Falcons are a team that have never quite been able to put together a dominant defense and an explosive offense at the same time, and the team's sputtering offensive effort against a tough Steelers D indicates that they're not quite at an elite level.

That said, I think the defense was better than it's been in years in that single game, and the offense is too good to keep down for long. We may just be "there" by the end of the season.

2) From the sounds of it, the Falcons are having some issues in their secondary. Do they have enough talent at the position to keep up with the Cardinals talented --albeit somewhat depleted-- receiving corps?

It's going to be an interesting battle. The Falcons would be wise to have a safety cheat over on Larry Fitzgerald and give Dunta Robinson some help. Even Darrelle Revis would have difficult containing Fitz.

After that, Brent Grimes and Chris Owens match up pretty well with Steve Breaston and Stephen Williams. Grimes is a ballhawk who will try to cut in on Breaston and hopefully shake him up, and Owens is a very physical corner despite his size who will stick to Williams like glue when he's asked to. We're certainly not going to fully contain your guys, but I like to think the talent exists to limit the damage.

3) The Falcon's running game only earned 58 yards in 23 rushes last week. Was it because of Pittsburgh's defense or was it internal problems and do you expect more yards versus the Cardinals?

Basically, it was Pittsburgh's defense. The Steelers have one of the toughest run Ds in the league. Michael Turner looked a little tentative and the offensive line was bad, but at the core you can blame the defense.

That said, I'm not taking your D lightly. I don't expect Turner to average seven yards a carry or anything ridiculous like that. He'll certainly get a hell of a lot closer to 100 yards against the Cardinals, though it may take 20-25 carries.

4) Head coach Mike Smith said he was upset and demand improvement at every position. Was it really that bad and how much improvement do you expect in week two?

Well, again, we were facing a top defense. I think Mike Smith was frustrated with the offense and decided to pick on the defense a little, too.

I expect considerable improvement. Again, I'm not taking you guys lightly. The Cardinals are still a good team, even with the world's most imperfect quarterback under center. But the Falcons are going to be out for blood and your D just isn't at Pittsburgh's level yet. There will be improvement, and our defense should hold its own.

5) Who is one player that Cardinals fans might not be aware of who they will know after Sunday?

I always go with Kroy Biermann. He's developing into one of the nastier pass rushing defensive ends in the NFC, piling up three sacks in the pre-season and one against the Steelers. He's very quick and has a way of getting under and around blockers, so I'm sure you'll hear his name a couple of times this weekend.

Is It 2010 Or 1965 Around Here? Ines Sainz And NCAA Football Make Me Wonder

Three guys sit around a table while a female, who is working in the room, stands nearby. One of the guys comments, within earshot of the woman, that what she's wearing makes her look like a "Madame from a Shanghai whore house". Is it an NFL locker room or the latest episode of AMC's Mad Men?

If you've followed the story of Ines Sainz and the New York Jets, you might not be too sure.

I won't waste precious words to recap the entire situation, but basically Ines Sainz, a reporter for the Mexican television network TV Azteca, was attending Jets practice for the network and had coaches throw footballs in her direction during practice -- one can only assume it was done so players could check her out and talk to her -- and later, she was called out by players in the locker room.

Sainz is known for her scantily clad attire -- for some cheap page views for the company, you can see the picture here -- and crazy antics around football players (she measured players' biceps during media day when the Arizona Cardinals were in the Super Bowl). Because of this, many players, including the Redskins' Clinton Portis and the Arizona Cardinals' Darnell Dockett, and many in the media have insinuated she was "asking for it" by dressing the way she did.

Sorry, but that isn't a good enough reason to let the locker room turn into, or rather stay as, the frat house from Van Wilder.

It is like the 1st Amendment. In order to protect everyone's rights, you have to defend even those that, in many people's eyes, don't deserve it. I may not like someone saying that the President is a socialist, that Sarah Palin is retarded, that they want to burn the Koran or that Charles Barkley sucked -- hypothetically, of course -- but I'd defend their right to say it, no matter what. If we didn't defend everyone's right to free speech, when we wanted to exercise our liberty, it just might not be there anymore.

That's the situation female reporters are in. Sainz isn't exactly who they want representing them. Granted, I can't say; I don't have the prerequisite parts or lack thereof, but I wouldn't want Rick Reilly in a pair of tight jeans and a low cut shirt representing me. But in order to protect their rights, she has to be defended.

Sainz wasn't the one that complained about the treatment she received; it was fellow reporters who did. It seems as if she was fully aware that she dressed more like Linda Lovelace than Linda Cohn. Those around her did the right thing. Even if Sainz wasn't willing to admit the behavior was wrong, it shouldn't be tolerated. If it were, it would be as bad as condoning it. Locker rooms would be allowed to continue to behave like Mad Men.

Athletes are professionals and the locker room, whether anyone likes it or not, is a place of business. No one should be subject to harassment of any form. This isn't 1965.

In the same week while athletes were treating female reporters in an archaic manner, the NCAA and the Downtown Athletic Club continued to treat athletes like ladies of the night.

This summer has been one filled with examples of just how behind the times the NCAA really is. Somehow USC no longer has victories they earned and the school's football players, who never knew Reggie Bush, are being punished for events they had nothing to do with. Lane Kiffin -- a man who deserves to be punished, but not for this -- is left to clean up a mess while Pete Carroll gets to bask in the money and recognition of the NFL.

If real life worked like the NCAA did this summer, when two people got divorced their kids would be stricken from the record and they would have to wait at least two years before "getting lucky" in their next relationship.

Did Reggie Bush cheat the system? Yes. The more intriguing question is why?

Simply put, it's because the NCAA is operating in the past.

Student athletes shouldn't be treated like indentured servants. College football is now a billion dollar industry and it's all earned because of the work and on-field talents of the student athlete. The idea that giving the players a fully paid for education may have been reimbursement enough 45 years ago, but it doesn't cut it in 2010.

The top athletes, like Bush, know college is a stepping stone to fame and fortune in the National Football League. Most don't see the education as the reason for them being in school, and who could blame them? They're basically holding a winning lottery ticket, but they are being forced to hold onto it for three years before cashing it in.

The NCAA also limits the jobs an athlete can hold while at the school. It's no wonder a guy like Bush was tempted to, and did, take money and lost his Heisman or that A.J. Green is suspended four games for selling his own jersey to a booster.

It's time to let these athletes have a piece of the pie and change the rules to allow them to earn a decent wage while in school. Do that and you remove most temptation for athletes to take money from agents, boosters and other nefarious characters.

It's not very often that you can compare a situation involving a scantily clad woman to one about a college football great -- unless they are dating -- but in this case, it's apropos. It's time for both the NFL and the NCAA to take a long hard look at what Ines Sainz and Reggie Bush have revealed: that both leagues are in dire need to evolve.

Al McCoy's Abbreviated Broadcast Schedule For The Suns Means The End Is Near

I know the day when Al McCoy retires is coming, but I'm not sure Suns fans are ready for it. Luckily, today isn't that day, but it was close.

The Phoenix Suns and Mr. McCoy -- I refuse to refer to a legend and personal favorite as just Al -- announced Wednesday morning that McCoy will take "select East Coast road trips" off this season. Long time public address announcer and the voice of ASU Women's Basketball Jeff Munn will fill in during his absence.

While this doesn't signify the end of Mr. McCoy's career, it means we are inching closer to the final chapter of this illustrious ride.

If you are anything like me, you are a card-carrying member of the "Church of Shazzam" and some of your favorite Suns memories come with their own soundtrack courtesy of Mr. McCoy. Whether it's a Dan Majerle three accompanied by the word "Shazzam" engrained in your brain, a Gar Heard shot going through because "somebody up there is on our side" or a driving floater by the "Nash Rambler," he's been a part of it all.

If you were to ask many who the greatest Sun of all time is, you'd hear people say Steve Nash, Connie Hawkins and Charles Barkley. For my money, it's Mr. McCoy. He's a Hall of Famer who has been the voice of Phoenix's most beloved franchise for 40 seasons and has been there through the good and the bad.

Earlier today, KTAR's Dave Burns tweeted out that "McCoy is absolutely one of the reasons why I got into this biz. Some grew up on Scully or Harwell, I had Al". I completely agree with the sentiment and I'm willing to bet all the money in my checking account -- all $54 of i t-- that we aren't the only two in the Valley who entered the business because of his dulcet tones and the passion his descriptions sparked inside of us.

If his 41st season proves to be his last, we can only hope that we find out before it's over. Mr. McCoy deserves a farewell tour that includes gifts and recognition. Whether we find out or not, one thing is for sure: fans should cherish his calls of the game because they won't be around forever.

And that's just "heartbreak hotel."

Question Of The Day: What To Do About The Arizona Cardinals VS. The St. Louis Rams?

I hope you all don't mind, but today's question is more of a personal one than one directly about the team. See, I have an issue that only you, true Cardinal fans, can understand.

This weekend, instead of being parked in my palatial -- OK, tiny -- apartment in the east valley, I'll be 3,000 miles away in Boston for my cousins wedding. At the exact time my cousin says his vows to his new bride, the team I vowed never to miss will be kicking off their season.

After cursing my cousin and trying various schemes to get out of having to attend -- like getting laid off -- I've accepted the fact that I won't be watching the game and commenting on it live like I've grown accustom to.

The only issue I now face is if I should avoid all televisions, cellphones and computers in an attempt to keep the outcome of the game a mystery until I can get to my DVR on Monday afternoon, or if I should keep up to date on the game on my cellphone at the wedding.

My fate is in your hands, faithful Revenge of the Birds readers. If you think I should be like one of those ESPN commercials where I'm constantly sneaking my phone out to grab a glimpse of the game, I will. If you think I should avoid everything and watch the game on DVR, I'll do that, too.

Thanks for the help and as always, vote in the poll and debate the topic in the comment section below.

Darnell Dockett Is Right, I'm Not A Football "Expert" And Neither Are You

Darnell Dockett had something to get off his chest this morning on Twitter. Then again, doesn't he always?

Today, he went on a very interesting rant about how people who haven't played football aren't "experts" and shouldn't make predictions.

I also hate men that talk about football and never played a day in there life and make predictions, and never played ONE DOWN! Half the people who make predictions never played a day in there life, they wouldn't get picked to play football in the street!

I have to agree with Dockett, in theory. The term "expert" is thrown around more often than Albert Haynesworth took and failed the condition test in training camp. Just because you are paid to write about, watch or comment on sports doesn't make you an expert (believe me, I know -- I was, and hope again to be, one of those people). They are fans with inside information. They are there to inform and entertain. Nothing more, nothing less.

The only true experts are the guys who have been in coaches meetings, who have run two-a-days and who have strapped on the helmet and competed. If you don't fit into one of those categories, I'm sorry, but you are just a very lucky fan who gets to cover the sport.

This doesn't mean that there aren't very educated and smart reporters out there providing unique and interesting information -- quite the contrary. But they aren't "experts" and very few are even insiders. Most are just guys with an entertaining perspective or a way with words who bring fans their opinions and information from the experts within the sport.

Any of these so called "experts" making predictions are doing so for entertainment purposes only and have no clue what will happen (if you have any doubt, just watch my picks in our "pickem" contest and I'll prove my theory right). They don't understand the intricacies of the game like someone who played or coached (I should know, I was the finest special teamer, kickoff tee getter and flag football coach Seton Catholic has ever seen).

So memo to the "experts": don't take yourselves too seriously. Football is about having fun, arguing about the game with your friends and, first and foremost, being a fan. That is, of course, unless you played. Then prognosticate away.

With that said, I'm predicting the Cardinals to pull off a 10-point victory against the Rams on Sunday. Sorry, Darnell, I couldn't resist. I'm no expert, and my career sub .500 record in picking games should prove it.

No Longer The Lambs: Previewing The Arizona Cardinals At St. Louis Rams With Turf Show Times

The AK, After Kurt, era begins on Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals take on another team all too familiar with the pain losing Kurt can cause, the St. Louis Rams. The Rams were lucky enough to have a capable quarterback to keep the team competitive for a brief time, Marc Bulger, after Warner left there. Sunday will be the first chance that Derek Anderson has to prove he can do the same for the Cardinals.

While the Rams have been anything but formidable over the last three seasons, things are looking up. Number one pick, quarterback Sam Bradford, has given fans reason for optimism while second year head coach Steve Spagnuolo has given the team a new attitude.

While talking about the game with other Cardinals fans is fun, it doesn't provide us with any insight we don't already have. (We can only tell each other the Cards are amazing so many times before it gets old. Oh, who am I kidding, it never gets old.)

That's why we caught up with Ryan from over at Turf Show Times to break down the Rams and give his prediction for the game (Hint: he likes his hometown team).

1. From what you've seen, is Sam Bradford truly ready to start or are the Rams rushing him?

Bradford looks ready to start, and made a very convincing case for that during the preseason. In addition to his impressive accuracy, Bradford made quick decisions, executed plays well and had a veteran-like command of the huddle. Yes, he'll look like a rookie at times, making rookie mistakes, but the bottom line is that he gives the Rams their best chance to win games.

2. The Rams have won six games total in the last three seasons, what, if anything, did you see in preseason that leads you to believe that things will be different this season?

A multi-dimensional offense that can score points. Having a QB to pair with RB Steven Jackson instantly improves the Rams offense. Questions remain, such as will they have enough pass rush or can the wide receivers provide an effective passing game, but it's obvious that the Rams are headed in the right direction.

3. Is the Rams secondary improved enough to compete with the Cardinals talented wideouts?

That's a tough assignment, healthy or not, for any secondary. Ron Bartell will be the guy most closely shadowing Larry Fitzgerald on Sunday. He's healthy after playing through a hip injury last season and is a pretty good corner. On the other side is Bradley Fletcher who is a physical, press corner who does well in man coverage. The Rams have seen Oshiomogho Atogwe, the playmaker of the bunch, become a much stronger coverage guy recently. It's a challenge to be sure, but I think there's more questions about the guys not named Kurt Warner who'll be throwing passes their way.

4. What is one guy that Cardinals fans may not know about but will surprise them on Sunday?

WR Laurent Robinson is a talented player, that the Cardinals didn't see last year because he was on IR by the time these two teams met. He gives Bradford a good route runner with solid hands who can pickup yards after the catch. He's not the flashy wide receiver you think of when you think #1, but he's an important weapon for this offense.

5. Prediction, who will win, why and by how much?

I'm still running on preseason optimism so I'll say the Rams win by 3, if the offensive line can keep the blitz out of the backfield.

Hey guys, sorry I keep doing this but the boss man over at SB Nation Arizona keeps cracking the whip so I keep having to produce columns for him. Today's topic? Previewing the Arizona Cardinals opponents.

Instead of the normal, mundane game by game approach. I decided to give it a little more personality (Or at least a really cheesy idea. You be the judge).

With this summer's "blockbusters" falling pretty flat and many of the national media expecting the Cardinals to follow suit, why not combine both to preview the opponents our beloved NFL franchise will faceoff against this season.

Take a look, or actually read it, and leave a comment if you are so inclined.

There are two things that I still anticipate the same way the chubby, goofy 10-year-old version of myself with the bad hair cut used to (truth be told, the only thing that has really changed about me is my age). Those two things are the start of the Cardinals season and summer movies.

No matter how much I anticipated either as a kid, they inevitably disappointed me every year. That wasn't tough to do as a Cardinals fan and growing up in the movie wasteland that was the mid ‘90s. (I mean really, the best things to come out that I could see as a early teen were Titanic, As Good As It Gets and Jerry Maguire. I saw the latter with my grandparents, which is not exactly the way you want to be introduced to the nude female body. Then again neither is having Tom Cruise on top of said nude female body. But I digress.)

With this summer's "blockbusters" falling pretty flat and many of the national media expecting the Cardinals to follow suit, why not combine both to preview the opponents our beloved NFL franchise will face off against this season?

The format is pretty simple: six different categories, all represented by six different films from Hollywood's Summer of 2010, each with a description and the Cards' opponents that fit.

Sex and the City 2
A group that used to be "sexy" now just comes off as desperate and over-hyped in their pursuit of the "ring".

At the Minnesota Vikings, November 7: I mean really, the Vikings and Brad Childress are like any of the guys who were with Kim Cattrall's character Samantha. They're willing to run around and make idiots out of themselves to get someone over-aged and full of themselves.

Dallas Cowboys, December 25: Like the stars of the movie, the Cowboys have taken a chance with anyone willing to look at them in hopes of getting a shot at getting the "ring" (see: TO, Roy Williams and Bill Parcells). When you add in Jerry Jones' obvious plastic surgeries, Tony Romo's romantic escapades, the fact that Miles Austin is dating Kim Kardashian and that Dez Bryant's mother may or may not have been a prostitute, you have precisely the story lines and characters in the film.

Synopsis: The Cardinals will probably fair about as well in these games as the film did at the box office and will split the pair. The only difference is that mostly men will watch them, while only women would dare to be found buying tickets to Sex and the City 2.

The Expendables
In theory, they should be action-packed because of the league they're in, but the poor players just make it unintentionally humorous.

Oakland Raiders, September 26; Tampa Bay Buccaneers, October 31; and Kansas City Chiefs, November 21: Just look at these teams' rosters and you'll see that on the surface they may look to have talent. But deep down, it has all been falsely inflated and sure to fall flat. Not that unlike Sylvester Stallone and his band of merry (allegedly)roided men in this film.

Synopsis: If the Cards don't sweep this trio of the terrible, who combined for a total of 12 wins in 2009, the season might be a lot worse than even the national "experts" have predicted.

Eat Pray Love
This game, the Cards will "Eat" their pregame meal, "Pray" they don't get hurt and "Love" it if they actually win.

New Orleans Saints, October 10: Like the actress who played the main character in the movie, Julia Roberts, the Saints and Drew Brees are everyone's darlings. Like the film with the critics, the Cardinals took a beating when these two teams met in January.

Synopsis: The Cardinals were outmatched by the Saints when they had Kurt Warner and looked even worse when they knocked him out. This is a game where the Red Birds and their fans should be happy to just get out with Derek Anderson still standing and having not thrown six interceptions.

Twilight: Eclipse
The story of a bunch of blood suckers fighting to defeat their enemies and take control.

All in-division NFC West games: The 49ers, Seahawks and Rams all think the Cardinals are in the "Twilight" of their run in the division and they are looking to fight to "Eclipse" the Cards' rising star. Like the vampires and werewolves in the film, these NFC West foes are like the undead: no matter how many times you try to kill them, they just keep coming back for more. (OK, they all can't be fantastic.)

Synopsis: The Cards aren't that much worse than they've been in the last three seasons and no one in the division has taken a major step forward to beat them. Those picking the 49ers to beat the Cards and win the division are using the retirement of Kurt Warner and the arrival of Derek Anderson as the reason why. Problem is, they fail to realize that they are betting against the back-to-back division champs for the same reason the 49ers will fail: poor quarterback play. Alex Smith isn't any better -- and, in fact, probably worse -- than Derek Anderson. While the 49ers are a worthy adversary, the Seahawks and Rams are a year or two away. I'll take the Cards to win four of their six division games in the West.

The A-Team
A rag tag group of skilled professionals who look bad, but can get the job done in the most unusual of ways.

Denver Broncos, December 12 and at Carolina Panthers, December 19: Both Denver and Carolina had mediocre years in 2009, each recording eight wins (basically being sentenced to the prison, or limbo, of the NFL). Neither team has a great quarterback or defense (Carolina lost Julius Peppers to free agency and Denver lost Elvis Dumervil to injury). They are wild cards, like the A-Team, and could just as easily be league laughing stocks as much as they could "breakout" and wreak havoc on the league itself. With these games coming in the final month of the season, they have the potential to do a lot of damage to the Cardinals' playoff hopes.

Synopsis: These teams are too tough to tell how they'll be come December. With one at home, Denver, and one on the road, Carolina, it looks like this will most likely be a split for the Cards.

The Other Guys
An odd pair who have the potential to be as awkward as they are good. They have a chance to step up like the league's top teams whom they idolize if they can get out of their own way.

At Atlanta Falcons, September 9 and at San Diego Chargers, October 3: These two teams are an interesting pair. San Diego made the playoffs last season after winning 13 games, while Atlanta took a step back and missed the playoffs, finishing 9-7. While Atlanta seems to be an up and coming team, like Mark Walberg was an up and coming cop in the NYPD, they have flaws that may hold them back (see the development of Matt Ryan as an example). Like Will Ferell's character, San Diego -- or as it's called in its native German ... oh, nevermind -- is content with where it's at, not wanting to rock the boat too much to either improve or fail. They're solid, but not quite elite and they've had an awkward offseason with the Vincent Jackson holdout and the loss of LaDainian Tomlinson in free agency. Like in the film, by the end, both of these teams will probably have it all figured out and make it to the playoffs.

Synopsis: Both the Chargers and the Falcons have the potential to be really good teams with really good quarterbacks. The best thing for the Cardinals is that they are getting them relatively early in the season. That said, both games are on the road, so a split for the the Birdgang is likely.

So there you have it. The Arizona Cardinals schedule as broken down by the summer's Hollywood movies. Like it was for Hollywood, this won't be a record-breaking year for the Cards, but they should finish alright with, if my math is correct, a 10-6 record and another NFC West division crown. Grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show. In the NFL, nothing ever goes by the script and who knows, maybe this entire thing has just been a dream like Inception. Or was it?

I've consistently said the Cardinals can win the division, but the 49ers should be favored at this time because they have fewer question marks. As far as scheduling, it's tough to predict the Cardinals in that area. They went 6-2 on the road last season, but lost at home to Carolina. I see eight or nine victories on that Arizona schedule this season, which would put them right in the hunt for a third consecutive division title. The San Francisco 49ers should also be in that range, too. I'm not expecting any one team to run away with this division. And I'll say it again: Do not write off Arizona.

"Arizona Cardinals -- Uhh, what happened to the up-and-coming, perennial playoff-caliber Cardinals? They were here a minute ago. And then … Anquan Boldin left. Antrel Rolle left. Karlos Dansby left. Kurt Warner retired. His replacement, fifth-year QB Matt Leinart, imploded. It's hard to win if nobody on your team, including the head coach, thinks you can lead. That's basically what happened to Leinart, who failed to inspire confidence or first downs during the preseason. So Ken Whisenhunt cut Leinart and promoted Derek Anderson to starter. Whooee."

Yet another "expert" barley skimming the surface of a very complex offseason for the Arizona Cardinals. He's forgetting everyone who left, sans Warner, has been replaced with someone as skilled. What do we know know though, we're just the guys who watch the team every week and follow their every move.

Since I've spent most of my time here over the last few weeks, the boss man cracked the whip and had me write a piece for the mother-ship. Don't worry though, for now I haven't strayed from the topic of the Cardinals. I mean, we're days away from the opener so there isn't any other topic to talk about. Please take a look at the column and leave a comment if you are so inclined.

There has been an awful lot of love given to the Arizona Cardinals' second string quarterback on this site and around the internet the last few weeks and somewhat deservingly so. He looked great in his preseason appearances for the team. The problem is, it was just that, preseason.

Hall played against third and fourth string defensive players fighting to make a roster. He didn't play against the league's elite like he will if anything happens to Derek Anderson.

Cardinals fans are falling prey to what I like to call the "PBG" or "Preseason Beer Goggles".

Just like how people get more attractive with each passing drink at a bar, the same can be said for athletes and preseason games. An athlete, who wouldn't otherwise play in a regular season game, becomes much more attractive to fans with each passing game. Fans fail to account for the talent the player is going up against and instead begin to believe they would perform the same way against starters or in a game that actually means something.

As it is with alcohol and attractiveness, bench players' preseason performances and fan love happens incrementally.

PBG starts simply, with the highly touted and early round draft pick who looks to have fully reached his potential already in preseason. This is the equivalent of one beer. Most likely your eyes aren't deceiving you too much but there is still likely a learning curve that will come in the regular season.

The two beer equivalent is the older veteran who all of a sudden shows flashes of his younger self. Sure, it might be for real, but you better take a good long look before believing what you are seeing.

Then there's the young late round pick who looks good enough to crack the rotation or the four beer equivalent. In all likelihood, in reality things probably aren't as good as what you think you are seeing. The guy may look like an eight or nine right now but in the light of sobriety --the regular season-- he'll probably look an awful lot closer to a four or a five.

Which brings us to the Max Hall level or the "too many beers to count" stage. Yes, what you are looking at probably has "potential" but they aren't close to reaching that potential right now. When sobered up you realize that you probably should have waited a year or two for this one to "grow into" that potential before putting it in your "starting lineup".

I'm not saying I don't like Max Hall, it's actually quite the contrary. I think he, and John Skelton, are the first true young quarterback prospects the Arizona Cardinals have had since Jake Plummer. With that said, the reality of the situation is that both have a lot left to learn and they should be doing that learning while holding clipboards on the sidelines rather than taking snaps on the field.

If you fell in love with Max Hall and think that he could step in right now, be careful what you wish for. You are one Derek Anderson injury away from a sobering wake up call. Hall, despite his maturity, is still an undrafted rookie and there is an adjustment period necessary for him to be ready for the NFL regular season. Be patient. He'll get there.

Max Hall as the Cardinals starter will come with quite the hangover, one that could easily lead to a 4-12 season. It's called preseason for a reason. If everyone could look good in the regular season, there would be no need to have exhibition games at all.

If you had told me five years ago that I'd be defending the Bidwills I would have thought you were crazy. That said, Michael Silver's ranking and subsequent cheap shots seem inaccurate and uncalled for. Than again maybe I'm a homer who's just drinking way too much of the Cardinal red Kool-Aid these days.

" 27. Arizona Cardinals – Bill Bidwill (Michael Bidwill): When I think back to the Cardinals’ near-victory in Super Bowl XLIII, why do I confuse it with the previous year’s game at the Cardinals’ home stadium? Ah, that’s right, because Tom Petty was the Super Bowl XLII halftime singer, and the lyrics to one of his classic songs – "Even the losers get lucky sometimes" – could have been written for the cheap, small-thinking Bidwills. For all of the talk about Matt Leinart’s failure to seize his opportunity as retired quarterback Kurt Warner’s(notes) presumed successor, remember that the Bidwills’ lowballing of the player most responsible for their first-ever NFC championship after the ’08 season led the quarterback to seriously consider the overtures of the division-rival 49ers, which would have accelerated the Cards’ current nightmare by a year. Let’s hope this week’s re-signing of defensive tackle Darnell Dockett(notes) – six months after he took shots at the franchise for its passive approach to start free agency – is a positive sign of change."

Trust Is Earned Not Given. Ken Whisenhunt Has Earned The Trust Of The Arizona Cardinals

There is a saying that goes "trust is earned, it is not given". If that's true, and I believe it is, than the Arizona Cardinals and their fans shouldn't be worried about this season.

Think about the coaches who have called the Cards their team. Did you, as a fan, trust any of them? Did you believe in the mild mannered Joe Bugel? Was there ever a time when you truly trusted that Buddy Ryan was bringing a winner to town? Did you ever trust the moves that quiet Vince Tobin made or the rah-rah style of Dave McGinnis? Did you trust the charts touting Dennis Green's talent or buy into his quarterback carousel?

If you are anything like me, the answer to all those questions is no.

For years there hasn't been much to trust about the Arizona Cardinals as a franchise. From top to bottom the team has been filled with false promises and exaggerated skills. Things are different now though.

In a time where the "quarterback of the future" was just cut, the new starter is a Cleveland Browns reject --which is about as good as being a Cards reject from the early 2000s-- and the backup is now a undrafted rookie, it would be easy not to believe in this club. The difference between now and the franchise Cardinals fans knew for years is that they've earned trust.

Think about what Ken Whisenhunt has done in just three seasons. He's never had a losing season. He's won back-to-back NFC West titles and there's that little thing of taking the Cards to the Super Bowl. His decisions have, more often than not, worked out. Everything he's done has earned the trust of his players, the organization and the fans (or at least the fans should trust him).

Was the decision to go with Derek Anderson over Matt Leinart a tough one? Yes. Is it one that many can question? Yes. Is it enough to change people's opinions on Ken Whisenhunt and the franchise? It shouldn't be.

Just a few years ago Whisenhunt was face with a similar situation. Go with the young "up and coming" quarterback in Leinart or go with the old washed up starter Kurt Warner. People questioned Whisenhunt's decision than thinking he was hurting the team's chances to win (if you don't believe me, go back and read some of the articles written about the decision). That decision not only worked out, it changed the perception of the franchise.

No, Derek Anderson doesn't have the resume that Warner did, but he's also younger that Warner was when he won the starting job. Anderson has a great deal of potential. He has a big arm and the ability to make the big play.

People who are questioning Anderson's ability as a starter and referencing last season as proof why he can't lead the Cardinals to the playoffs fail to remember that he was throwing to guys named Cribbs & Massaquoi, not exactly Fitzgerald and Breaston or even Doucet and Williams.

Since his pro bowl season in 2007, Anderson hasn't had a true top notch receiver to throw to. In one year his top target, Braylon Edwards, went from a solid player to a guy who caught about as effective as a fishing line without a hook or bait.

Anderson has the potential to be more like Warner than Leinart ever did. Add that to Whisenhunt's track record and things shouldn't seem all that bad.

The moves Whisenhunt has made over the years in Arizona has earned him trust and because of that fans should give this team the benefit of the doubt. When the season start Sunday, it's Anderson's turn to earn the trust of the fans and for the team to officially remove any doubt.

\

So Matt Leinart was cut today but we've beaten that subject to death in the question of the day. With that in mind, we have a variation on the Leinart topic for today's question. Who is the biggest draft bust ever for the Arizona Cardinals? Is it the former number ten pick Leinart? What about 2002's number twelve overall pick Wendell Bryant who was out of the league by 2005? Maybe you prefer the number three overall pick from 1993 Garrison Hearst who gained a measly 1503 yards in three seasons as a Cardinal?

Matt Leinart Makes It Through First Cuts But Don't Expect Him To Be A Cardinal Come Sunday

In his hit song Geek In the Pink, Jason Mraz sang the line "sometimes you gotta fit in to get in". If only Matt Leinart had an affinity for dorky, fedora wearing, guitar playing musical artists, he may be in a different position heading into Saturday's mandatory cuts.

Leinart made it through Friday's cuts but the Arizona Cardinals are still three cuts away from getting down to the required 53 man roster.

With the news that both Max Hall and John Skelton have been informed that they made the roster and the assumption that Derek Anderson is the starter, something coach Ken Whisenhunt was unwilling to confirm on Friday, it seems like a safe bet that Leinart is the odd man out (which is probably one of the few times in his life that he's been referred to as odd). Even beat writer extraordinaire Kent Somers sees it that way, telling his Twitter followers that Leinart "will not" be a member of the Cards come Sunday.

While Whisenhunt wouldn't confirm nor deny anyone's suspicions (come on though, even Mr. Magoo can see what's coming), he did have something interesting to say during his media availability Friday afternoon. He said that he was questioning whether Leinart "...can survive in the role as a No. 2 on this team. And that’s really what the decision is about."

If Leinart gets cut tomorrow, based on Whisenhunt's quote, it sounds like it will be his own fault. Like the Mraz song says, all he had to do was fit in with his teammates and his coach's wishes and he would get on the roster, and in all likelihood with Derek Anderson as the starter, get into a game.

If Leinart listened to Mraz's song he would have known the next line and the impact it could have had on his career with the Cardinals. "But don't ever quit cause soon I'm gonna let you in."

Which is exactly what Whisenhunt would have done.

That or the team has decided to extend Darnell Dockett for a second time in a week.

The former CFL star Stevie Baggs was cut according to the Arizona Republic's Kent Somers. He is eligible for the practice squad.

By my count that means there is 19 moves left to make it to the 53 man roster.
