Cincy Jungle Still Playoff Bound

Yesterday's loss may have hurt our swagger and our depth in the secondary, but one thing it definitely has not hurt is our chance of making the playoffs.

Our Bengals currently sport the second-best record in the AFC with seven games left.  The tough part is that four of those games come against teams in the playoff hunt, three against teams in the top-three draft pick hunt.

The remaining games on the schedule for the Good Guys are:

@ Baltimore

vs. Cleveland

@ Pittsburgh

vs. Houston

@ St. Louis

vs. Arizona

vs. Baltimore

Most of us would agree that, barring a catastrophic implosion, the games with the highest likelihood of us winning are:

Cleveland, St. Louis, Arizona

That would put us at 9 wins.  The rest of the games are not so easy to predict but I would have to think we'd win at least one, especially since we play Baltimore so well and they looked very average yesterday.

The homer in me says we're going to win out...how could we not?

But the realist in me says that's an unlikely scenario, but we will make it to 10 wins.

What do you think, CincyJungle?  Will 10 wins AT LEAST get us to a Wild Card game or leave us on the outside looking in?

They were talking about this a few years ago with payroll as the main factor--trying to model the NFL profit-sharing CBA so that the money was split evenly between each division and each division made roughly the same amount of money.

I think the agenda is different this time around--sounds like they just realized how stupid it is for there to be an uneven amount of teams in each league, not to mention the divisions.

My solution: move Colorado to the AL West, Houston to the NL West. Now each league has 15 teams and each division 5 teams.

Wily Mo Pena is on a tear right now at AAA Reno, the affiliate for the Diamondbacks. He's even walking at a better clip than he used to. This is probably the guy Boston thought they were getting when they traded for him. I'd love to see WMP back in the league.

Red Reporter Eyewitness Report - Dayton Dragons vs. Ft. Wayne Fart Pains

Front page'd, good stuff Groovy Legs.  Edited for content. - CS

Ok I'm drunk.  I went to the game in my car and I got home in my friend's limo. I don't wanna get my car tomorrow. It's so far away. Dragons win 4-0 behind Josh Smith's stellar outing and timely hitting.  Wright Brothers Honorary Player of the Game goes to Josh Smith who struck out like eleventy batters or something absurd.  I don't know.  He was the reason the Drag Queens won.

Thoughts:

Beer is cheaper here than at GABP.  I got five 24 oz Labatts and it cost me $35. Bad idea.

Wow, Delino DeShields is in baseball still. Get that paper.

Josh Smith is striking a lot of people out. He doesn't throw hard though. He was topping out at 91. (Kitty cat)...

Billy Hamilton is fast. He stole 2nd and 3rd on two pitches after getting on via BB (I think... I was in line for a funnel cake at this point).

This funnel cake has too much powdered sugar.  I am going to put some on my nose and see if anybody thinks I'm a coke head.  It worked.  The future Mrs. GrooveLeg was not amused.

Twitter tells me the RR game threads are worth checking out.  It's true.

Someone in my section ponders why there is no minor league football.  I ask "What about the Big East?"  Nobody laughs.

Juan Duran cranks an oppo HR to score Yorman Rodriguez who got on via fielders choice.  One of them also scored from first one a routine double in the gap the inning before.  I don't know which one.  I'm too tired to check.

The girl Dragon mascot is in my section and I can't see around her fat ass.

The Ft. Wayne 3B makes a good play to end a threat in the 7th, I appreciate it silently.

I'm drunk.  The opposing team gets funny walkup music.

Future Mrs. GrooveLeg talks to a stranger about the Royal Wedding.  (Hump) all this noise.

Ft. Watne makes it interesting in the 9th.  The closer who will never play in the majors put 2 guys on.  Then he closed it out on a strikeout.  Nobody cheered.  It was cold.

I didn't get any pictures except for one of me and my boo in our seats.  Meh...

On the way out I see my dude's limo.  I don't think twice before rapping on the window.  There are familiar faces inside.  We get invited in and get escorted around until about 3 am.  Fresher than a farmer's market.  I taste pizza.  Did I have some?  I don't remember but I am hungry as (diddly). I get dropped off at home... My car is far away.

A little Facebook group popped up on Sunday night asking people to support the idea of Reds-fan Charlie Sheen throwing out the first pitch at a game in 2011. I'm 100% in.

Some will cheer, some will sulk, some will 'meh'. While TJ surgery for Wainwright would deliver a huge blow to the Cardinals' rotation, I had kind of hoped they would have been at full strength this year. The Reds are good enough to win the season series against the Cards this year, and I'm sure those WLBs will use this as an excuse when we do.

Anytime this team does poorly there is always the inevitable talk of people bailing for a team that won't let them down, but rarely do you see them making money in the process. Good idea, sellout.

Along The Olentangy Ohio State vs. Eastern Michigan highlights

I'm digging the new trend of these hi-res full-game highlight videos but as usual here's one which I would prefer to watch on mute.  Nonetheless, I'm thankful that somebody took the time and effort to compile the video especially because I couldn't watch the whole game live and I forgot to DVR it.  Kenny Guiton looks like a fast human being and Jaamal Berry excites me.

thanks to YouTube user lednerk for the skills and dedication.

Along The Olentangy OU Bobcat Tackles Brutus, Gets Fired

As the Buckeyes ran onto the field Saturday, the guy in the Rufus costume got hopped up on adrenaline and took a shot at Brutus.  After being tossed aside and losing his hat, he ran Brutus down in the end zone and continued embarrassing himself while players knelt in prayer.

I've heard the person in the Brutus costume is often female, no word on whether it was on Saturday.

Hope this punk's little moment was fun, because it was his last.

Along The Olentangy Why do fans of other teams hate Buckeye fans?

I went to the game with a Miami fan, a very close family friend of mine.  I was happy to bring him into our house to watch our two favorite teams beat each other up.

Of course, he was decked out in Miami gear.  Of course, he cheered loudly for his team when they did something good (which didn't happen after the first half HA!).  Of course, he high-fived the other Miami fans around us when they scored.  What he didn't do was root against the Bucks, name-call, take cheap shots at Tressel, or act belligerent.  He was just being a fan.

A guy in the row ahead of me had a problem with this.

Apparently, saying "YES!" after your team converts a third down should entice tOSU fans to say "Shut up, go back to Cry-ami."  Jumping up and down yelling "GO, GO, GO!" when your kick returner is taking one to the house deserves a "You better shut the f*ck up before I kick your ass."

While there were several other things muttered from this jackass, that last one was the straw that broke the camel's back.  I shot back something extremely obscene and pretty offensive.  Naturally we went back and forth and my mother somehow got involved without her even being at the game, but it got him to shut up.

I made sure to say was that my friend is a fan of his team, no different than you or I.  Not only are you setting a bad example for your teen-aged son, you're perpetuating the stereotype that Buckeye fans are assholes.  He's doing nothing but rooting for his team and you need to get used to the fact that people do that for teams not located in the 43210 zip code (this is the print version of this dialog...the actual conversation had many more obscenities and a lot more saliva).

During this squabble, he grabbed my wrist which I actually could have used to get him kicked out.  But I told him I wouldn't because I'm not the type of fan who doesn't let people root for their favorite team.  It was awesome.

He ended up leaving before the team sang Carmen Ohio.  WTF kind of "fan" does that?!?!?

Red Reporter Joey Votto for All-Star Campaign Posters

Just something I crudely did in my spare time.  Use these as your Facebook profile pic (I did), share them with friends, print them out and hang them up in your office.  The word needs to get out that our boy Joey Votto should be an All-Star this season.

As of the morning of May 24, Joey Votto leads all regular NL first basemen in the major mainstream offensive categories (the ones that matter to the voters)--batting average (.307), home runs (10), RBI (32), OPS (.950). Keep it up, Joe. We haven't had an All Star position player since Jr. repped the Reds in 2007 (he also led all NL voting IIRC).

ESPN's Jorge Arangure reports that the Cincinnati Reds are about to sign Cuban outfielder Felix Perez. Perez originally signed with the New York Yankees for $3.5 million last season, but his contract was voided after an age check failed.

One rumor is floating around that he'll sign "with a bonus of $550,000 and he could be assigned to Double-A" but Uncle Walt hasn't confirmed.

Perez is described as left-handed hitter with five-tool potential . Here's a video of him swinging the bat.

Red Reporter A Way Too Early and Semi-pointless Look At the Scott Rolen Trade

I've seen a lot of media attention being paid to Scott Rolen lately and I think it's totally justified and deserved.  The guy is hitting, playing above average defense, and being the quiet, veteran leader some Reds fans have been pining for since Rich Aurilia left town.

I saw one of the commenters compile some win/loss numbers in the comments section of an article or game thread that has a comments section (my memory sucks... I think it was Red Poodle in a game thread, but that's probably wrong), so I took the time and liberty to take it a step further and update everyone on W/L and ‘where-are-they-now’ since the trade went down.

TOTAL W/L SINCE SCOTT ROLEN JOINED THE TEAM:  52-40

with = Scott Rolen appeared in the game
without = Scott Rolen did not appear in the game whether due to injury or day off

2010 with:  19-9
2010 without:  0-4

2009 with:  27-13
2009 without:  6-14

TOTAL with:  46-22
TOTAL without:  6-18

Not too shabby...
