I took a flyer on STL 1b prospect Steven Hill late in my sim draft last year.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/H/Steven-Hill-1.shtml

This guy mashed in college and killed the ball in his pro debut last year. This year he's again killing the ball, going 333/376/595 between High A and AA ball. He's a little old but he's probably about where you'd expect a 2nd year pro from a smaller college. He's hit for both high average and high power through but has lost some of his plate discipline as a pro. I did notice he's only 5-11, 190, kinda small for a corner IF masher.

My question is, does anyone know anything about this guy? He didn't make BA's Cards list at all last year and just barely made John's at 20. Never hear his name mentioned. Is this guy a prospect? Suspect? Somewhere in between?

Here's the link:

http://files.mlb.com/mitchrpt.pdf

it's 409 pages, I think I'll wait and get the cliff's notes version from the internet but for those of you that have the time...enjoy.

Frankly, I'm not sure whether I care or not. I see both sides of the argument. Just think it's more interesting than anything and I hope this report sheds some light on the subject.

He's hitting well in his 1st 15 games in Lowell (small sample size I know):

316/443/386, more walks than Ks and 14-0 in SBs!

None of this is earth shattering but what made me start following this guy was what BA said about him in the 2007 handbook.

"He didn't swing and miss at A SINGLE PITCH as a high school senior."

That's sick, you gotta like that type of bat control.

He's fast, should stick in CF, and has great bat control and pitch selection.

Up and comer?

I was wondering if anyone knew of or could suggest writers/sites besides Will Carroll's work on BP that focus on player injuries and future injury probability?

I like Will's stuff but usually decide to just buy the book and forgo the website. Who else is out there that's worth reading?

Thanks for the help.

Winter Leagues

Is there any rhyme or reason to which prospects go to which winter league?

I found the discussion on Prospect Age interesting and enlightening so I thought I'd throw out a question that I really don't know the answer to.

Is there any rhyme or reason to which prospects go to which winter league?

Obviously, it seems that people w/ Caribbean heritage (PC policy don't throw the book at me if that's an incorrect classification, I just don't know the correct terminology) would prefer to go to the DWL and VWL but there are also other, American born, prospects that go there too. Conversely, many Carribean born player end up in the AFL.

Is there a set policy, or even a rule of thumb, that dictates who goes where?

And what of the players who ended up in the newly formed Hawaiian Winter League?

A guy everyone feels strongly about, one way or the other.

Here's a guy everyone feels strongly about, one way or the other. Seems like, for the most part, everyone on this board seems pretty down on the guy. Ks too much, might not end up at SS. But still, the guy has mashed. Everything I read sounds like he's got enough skill to stay at shortstop but an inferior offense player, Aybar, might push him to third. I personally think it would be silly for the organization to push someone w/ his offensive potential away from SS if he can handle it, but, then again, aybar doesn't look like a total slouch (don't sell yourself short judge, you're a tremendous slouch :-)). He's always hit in hitter's ballpark and that has been behind the hype of other Angels prospects in the past. etc. etc.

Despite numbers not quite on par w/ last year, he's still raked. What's your take on this guy? What do you predict for yearly numbers? Will/should he stick at SS? Will he just strike out too much to overcome an otherwise productive bat?

In the interest of full disclosure I have him in a DMB league so I have a vested interest in him doing well.

He seems to get a passing (usually negative) mention on several other diaries so I thought I'd bring the name back to the top of the list again.
