A Different View (from a different time) - What Starfish has to do with .400 hitters?
Now, this piece is not that recent - the collection (The Flamingo's Smile) was published at 1985.
And, yes the stat that it deals with is BA, which some consider a rather flawed stat.
And, yes. it's quite long, and the format is annoyin'...
HOWEVER, the general argument is as relevant now as it was then. And, while not being smart enough to be a stats geek, I always find Gould to be a great read.
Oh, and I almost forgot - Gould is a paleontologist - Baseball is just a hobby for him.

Dwarfing Jon Rauch?
I'm already pulling for this guy. An intelectual ball player... now, that's a novelty...
we should have tried and get him from the Angels in the Vernon trade. Just imagine him and Rauch on the same team...
refreshing quote:
Money is something else most people consider essential but Van Mil doesn’t. When he breaks into the majors – Angels coaches say a midseason call-up is a realistic goal – he’ll be paid the major league minimum of $410,000.
"It’s a Dutch way of thinking," he said. "I don’t need $400,000 a year; $200,000 would be good. And I don’t mind paying more in taxes. I can still live a very good life."
The Richard Griffin Poll
As the Griff seem to have been the center of attention around here lately, I thought we should clarify the air issue a bit.
So here's a poll. As simple as that.
the Yankees have reportedly signed former Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon.
In the event that Pujols doesn't re-sign, Stark names the Rangers, Nationals, Orioles, Blue Jays, Angels, Mets, and Dodgers as possible free agency suitors. He also cautions not to count the Red Sox and Yankees out, even though they have Adrian Gonzalez and Mark Teixeira, respectively. But none of these teams should get their hopes up just yet
the AA aproach
Check out Mike Wilner's report on what AA had to say re: those winter meetings.
A great read that should set some too-anxious debates to rest.

Do we need a "Latino Nanny"?
I commented about it elsewhere, but I figured that in order to stop that degeneration of the discussion, I'd better have a post dedicated to the issue.
I'll start by commenting that I'm a foreigner in Toronto too. English is my second language and far from my mother tongue. I have basic understanding of spanish and can handle myself at the streets of latin America.
So...
Jeff Blair, Do Shut Up!
I won't start here a list of grievances, but that Jeff Blair guy is getting on my nerves recently.
I'll just provide you with the latest specimen, and invite you to provide more.
For some obscure reason, the Fan590 gave that buffoon his own show, and he's definitely abusing it in order to push his (rather shameless) agenda.
Just a few minutes ago, when discussing the question of the next manager, Mr. Blair argued in favor of
Bobby Valentine as "he's going to be so much fun for the media". He even made J.P. Ricciardi, Valentine's colleague in ESPN, uncomfortable with trying to get him behind that hallucinated idea. Now making J.P "swagger" Ricciardi uncomfortable, that's an achievement...
I just find this guy obnoxious. He's not a provocator - that's Andrew Kristal. He's not the Arrogant Bastard - that's Bobcat. Jeff Blair is the kid that used to ask very long questions because he likes the sound of his (rather nasal) voice.
In short: IMO, Jeff Blair represents most of what's bad in the media. He's not the only one, but he annoys me the most. What I truly hate is when he picks a view that I agree with... I hate to be on the same side with the likes of him...
Recommended Booing (yes, yes.. and cheering...) Policy
From my experience at booing (and a bit of cheering), I've arrived at one major conclusion: If there's a clear booing/cheering policy, and the crowd boos in unison, it has a much greater effect. AND it is much more fun.
So I thought I'd lay out some basic rules for that policy, and you'll chip in and add yours. Then we'll find a fan working in a print-shop, who'll make 50,00 copies and we'll spread the word at the Rogers center...

I heard Richard Griffin today on Fan590. To my horror, I found myself agreeing to most of what he had to say.
