His performance over the last few seasons suggest that he's regressed significantly from the player he once was, but it's still hard to ignore what he did from ages 18 to 21, where he was consistently one of the best young players in baseball. I have a feeling someone's going to give him a second chance, and they might just find themselves with a pleasant surprise on their hands. It wouldn't be the first time the Indians got rid of a 24-year-old busted prospect right before he put things together.

From Clay at BP:

UPDATE 2/11/09

OK, we’ve got a few more bases covered. In the PFM, all the fielding data should be up-to-date, so Ryan Braun is back to being an exclusive left fielder. There was a pretty big problem with the players I added manually, as a temporary patch - Moyer, Uehara, and a few more. We got the programs to read their data, and so now they show up in the PFM and in the depth charts - trouble was, “WHIP” wasn’t one of the fields I initially entered, and when the PFM saw guys with 100 innings and a zero WHIP it gave them all Sabathia-sized contracts. That is fixed. These players still don’t have entries in all fields, though, and if your league uses one of the un-entered fields those players could still have strange results.
On the depth charts, the batting/onbase/slugging digits problems has been broken, fixed, re-broken, and re-fixed, and I think I know where I made the mistake that re-broke them so it should (fingers crossed) not happen again, unless I come up with a third way to break them. The quality start numbers have been largely repaired, but more in the sense of a field dressing than a proper fix; I’ll revisit them shortly.

What else - I’m going to redo the way saves are handled tonight, so expect the PFM pitcher results to look a lot better tomorrow morning. Braden Looper signed with the Brewers yesterday, so I had him displace some of the spot starters on their roster. I fixed a typo that had Josh Willingham drawing 5% of left field time instead of 75%. I’d like to get the PECOTA-based Playoff Odds report up and running in the next couple of days, and play around with some of the remaining free agents.

Top of the NL:

Cubs: now 97-65
Mets: now 92-70
Diamondbacks: now 92-70
Braves: now 87-75
Phillies: now 87-75
Brewers: now 86-76
Dodgers: now 84-78
Cardinals: 80-82
Giants: now 78-84

Who would you rather have GMing the Brewers? I ask this because The Z has pulled off yet another smart move for the Mariners, trading Aaron Heilman to the Cubs for Ronny Cedeno and Garrett Olson. As if his history scouting with the Brewers isn't enough, what he's done this offseason just makes it that much more likely he'll be a damn good GM.

This isn't to say Melvin sucks or needs to go.

From Baseball Prospectus:

–The Brewers are expected to move to the head of the class in the Brian Fuentes sweepstakes now that free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez has agreed to terms on a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets. Fuentes, a free agent, would fill the closer’s role with the Brewers, but the Angels are also expected to pursue him now that they have lost Rodriguez.

Steve Phillips says it's either the Angels or Cardinals for Fuentes.

Fuentes 2008: 62.2 IP, 1.10 WHIP, 47 H, 82 K, 22 BB, 2.73 ERA, 3 HR

As long as the signing is to win beyond 2009, I'd be okay with it. If it's an effort to load up 09 as part of some fantastical dream to catch the Cubs, I will poop in a brown bag, set it on Doug Melvin's doorstep, light it on fire, ring the doorbell, run away, hide behind bushes, and watch him stomp the bag of poop that is on fire with the end result being him getting poop all over his feet, legs and doorstep. I will then pop out from the bushes and yell, "That's for your poopy choices in life, son" and retreat away in an '82 Delorean.

Fielder for B.J. Upton

Fielder's in arbitration. Three years of control.

Upton has a year before hitting arbitration. Four years of control.

Fielder: 39.8 VORP. Is fat.

Upton: 32.1 VORP. Potentially had nagging shoulder injury the entire year preventing power.

I don't think this straight up would be accepted by Tampa. And with Upton's absolutely torrid October--not to mention the whole reigning AL Champs with an average roster age of like 11--I really wonder how much else it would take. So, pretend you're calling up the Rays' GM Andrew Freidman and make your best offer for B.J. Upton.

(note: I bring up Fielder because he's not an untouchable and of the non-untouchables has the most value--especially going to the DH league. But if you want to make an offer including Hardy and what not, go for it.)
