Geoff Schwartz?

6

"7. Offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz — Schwartz has visited the Vikings and 49ers so far in free agency. While a hip injury knocked him out for all of the 2011 season, Schwartz was a 16-game starter for Carolina in 2010. He can play right guard and right tackle, and has experience in both zone-blocking and power-running schemes." I seem to recall we had a visit scheduled with Schwartz. Anyone know when that's happening, or if it was cancelled? I know we got Winston, but it seems like Schwartz could still be an upgrade over Lilja, or at least be solid o-line depth?

Just for fun, here's my take on our top three offseason moves (so far): 1. Signing Stanford Routt early to give us flexibility in the franchise-Bowe-or-Carr issue. 2. Taking Eric Winston to Jack Stack. 3. Not signing John Carlson to a 5-year, $25M, $11M guaranteed deal. What's your top three?

Breaking News: Cain almost misses a pitch

1

From the Royals Twitter feed: "#Royals Lorenzo Cain, after nearly missing a pitch in 1st AB, then singling in 2nd AB, just sent one over bullpen in left for 1st spring HR." Apparently, Cain is so locked in that it's news that he almost missed a pitch in his first AB. Lowest swing-and-miss rate in MLB history, here we come! Nothing against Cain - just poking a little fun at the wording of the Tweet. =)

Yost's thoughts on starting rotation

7

No big surprises here, but I think it's the first time he's said anything besides the standard it's-an-open-competition line. Specifically... Paulino and Duffy: "Even though Paulino and Duffy have a leg up on those spots, there are still things that have to happen in order for them to cement those spots. These other guys are guys who, if they do what they’re supposed to do, could slide in." Crow: "Crow is a bit of a different story... because he’s kind of a contingency plan. If we don’t see what we want out of [Paulino and Duffy at] four and five, he can definitely slide in there."

Out of curiosity, has anyone seen any information about differences between Eiland and McClure? I feel like the little bit we hear about pitching coaches makes them all sound the same - i.e. work on repeatable mechanics, keep the ball down, throw strikes, follow through, eat your vegetables, etc.

Sounds like Ford will be posting a daily summary throughout spring training.

Some details on Routt's contract

+

Although I think the opening sentence of Clayton's article is ludicrous, he does have some info on the contract. According to him, Routt's contract pays him $11M this year. That means he gets $8.6M over the last two years of his contract. Factor out the $6M guaranteed for this year, and another $500K guaranteed somewhere else (Clayton is reporting $6.5M total guaranteed), and you get to $5M in base salary this year and $8.1M in base salary over the last two years - so it's a slightly front-loaded contract.

Gio is Yost's first choice to bat second

"He fits the spot because he has the ability to take pitches, he drives the ball the other way and he's a guy that can hit. This kid has hit everywhere. And if it works out, he's the best candidate for it."

Red Sox offer Edwin Jackson $5-$6M 1-year deal?

15

"Boston, which has offered a one-year deal in the $5-$6 million range according to major league sources, is definitely in the hunt.... Jackson reportedly has at least two multi-year offers. One of them is believed to be from the Baltimore Orioles. Jackson would like to pitch for a contending team. If he's to accept a one-year deal it would likely be in a place where he could prove his worth."

Maybe this is why no one has signed Edwin Jackson yet...

16

"Jackson is believed to be looking for a deal that pays him in the $15-to-17-million range annually. Agent Scott Boras has compared Jackson to C.J. Wilson, Mark Buehrle, John Lackey, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe in his book touting Jackson; all those pitchers received $14-to-17-million a year."

Rules of Football vs. Laws of Physics

Okay, first things first.  That.  Was.  An.  Awesome.  Game. I would've loved another 28-0 laugher, but for pure excitement and adrenaline, I'm not sure I've ever watched a better football game. ...

Carson Palmer's Arm Strength Fine?

6

"Quarterback Carson Palmer was spotted throwing sideline passes to tight end Kevin Boss in the first portion of practice, as offensive coordinator Al Saunders looked on and dished out pointers. Suffice, Palmer’s arm strength is just fine. His passes arrive in a hurry, in a tight spiral. So, cross off arm strength from your list of possible concerns." At least according to Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran...

My uninformed Chiefs win-loss record prediction

7

Just for kicks, I went through the Chiefs schedule to take a swag at predicting their record. I expected to come out 9-7 or at least 8-8, but I came out with a surprising 7-9. The schedule is uglier than I realized... Can someone convince me I'm being overly pessimistic? Please?

Billy Beane on shrinking windows for small market teams

4

Interesting column by SI, with implications for Mission 2012 and beyond. Money quote: "What you'll find is that the window for a small market team will grow smaller and eventually go away completely. We had seven years. Tampa Bay -- and they are very, very smart -- has made it to the playoffs two out of the past three years, and may not make it this year, and then what? To have any kind of window will take building a team organically, having to have something like 80 percent of your roster [homegrown]. That is extremely hard."

Raiders sign Jared Gaither

Interesting signing. I'm curious what the terms are, given Gaither's health concerns?

What Hosmer did today was a big mistake. He didn't give us a chance to steal the base. He was overanxious, wanting to make it happen too fast.

Ned Yost, on Hosmer's first-pitch pop-up in the 9th with Getz on 3rd and Dyson, the winning run, on 1st. Um, isn't this something that should've been discussed one-on-one, instead of in the press? I thought Yost was normally pretty good about not throwing his players under the bus publicly... (UPDATE: Changed the link to point to the same article on a different website. The original link is now re-directing to an article on Paulino's start for some reason...)

This is a simplistic analysis I did of Soria's secondary pitches. I would love feedback from those of you who know more about this stuff than I do (which is probably most of you). =)
