The RETURN of the Bikini Thread: Chiefs Week #2
This Bikini Thread is a throwback to some early MHR days. When I first began lurking on MHR in 2006, these things were common gameday occurrences. There is something about the form of a nice looking human being that can bring all fans together, no matter your team, no matter whether you are a Tebowmaniac, a skeptic, a guy who wants to lose for a higher draft pick, or a person who just wants to win a MF'n game. It's just good, all-American fun!
Early Game Open Thread
Orton looked good on his first drive in KC. He managed to avoid a catastrophic injury, but lack of chemistry with his new receiving corps led to 2 drops in the endzone. I'm interested to see how well he works in KC. Perhaps with McCluster the speedy back he will be able to get some pass offense going. The Chiefs are lucky that Orton has already played the Pack this season. He has experience most QB's don't get.
Discuss the early games here!
Chargers @ Chiefs Open Thread
I guess we can live vicariously through our hated rivals. As much as it pains me to say it, Go chefs. Ugh. That made me throw up in my mouth a little. In any case, as a diversion from the normal topics of the day, come and discuss our AFC West foes with good humor. Today is better than yesterday, the Broncos WILL return to glory, and... OH! Rivers just threw an interception. That makes me feel better already!
Wanna know what's past the jump?
X's and O's Talk: Bootleg?
I'd like to take a break from the.. uh.... usual topic of the day, and talk about a little gritty football stuff. I'm looking for an answer to a question, those of you who are experts in X's and O's. Why don’t we run the bootleg anymore? Elway was successful with it…. Plummer was successful with it…. but after Plummer, I don’t recall seeing a single bootleg. I know it was kind of a Shanahan thing, based on the success of the ZB run scheme, but Cutler never ran the bootleg that I remember. Maybe Orton’s feet don’t lend well to it, but it seems that since the bootleg is used with undersized linemen, where you know the pocket is going to collapse anyway, it would make sense just to run the bootleg and get the QB the heck out of dodge. I would think it would work GREAT with Tebow. You guys are all more expert than me… whatcha got?

Careless Words Affect Lives: Think For Yourself
Be aware of what the Mainstream Media (MSM) are peddling. The MSM brain trust has gotten together, and there is a shift in tactics regarding the Broncos. They are constructing a false dichotomy, which serves, intentionally or unintentionally, to put the Denver Broncos in a worse situation than they are in. Continue reading to find out what the heck I'm talking about.

Brandon Lloyd makes Pro Bowl.
Lloyd? Wait... that's got to be a typo.... That's not Marshall.... Who's Lloyd? LMAO.
MHR and the Culture Change
I love this site. Mile High Report is a bastion of reason and logic for Denver Broncos fans all over the world. The staff and many of the members go to great lengths to research stats, draw conclusion based on those facts, and compile insight and opinions from all over the Worldwide Web in order to give readers a clearer picture of truth about our beloved Broncos.
Every year or so, however, an event occurs that piques the interest of Broncos fans, and they come to the internet in droves searching for information. The more popular MHR gets, the more people are attracted to it, thus, the more popular it gets. MHR's growth seems exponential. The events that drive the influx of new members, or that drive the conversion of lurkers (those who read the site without signing up and commenting) into contributing members are often controversial.
The initial period of membership was bolstered by the decision by Mike Shanahan to bench Jake Plummer and start rookie Jay Cutler. Controversey occurs, and MHR grows. Then, Mike Shanahan was fired, McDaniels was hired, Cutler was traded; it was the offseason from hell. Controversey yields more MHR members, in a wave, once again. This offseason. Marshall and Scheffler gone. Clady hurt. But the single biggest event this offseason in terms of fan base interest was the drafting of Tim Tebow. It seems half of Floridians are now Broncos fans. This is the one event that wasn't negative that increased membership at MHR. However, as we know, Tebow is a polarizing figure. The discussions surrounding him can get heated.
Heated discussions bring me to my point. Mile High Report is changing. I examine the change after the jump.

Reversing Trends
My sister Sue and me were doing stunts with electric trains.
She said she's do the dishes, so I handed her the reins.
She engineered a collision steered by a hand-eye protege.
Before my train set started burning, I heard my sister say,
"Look straight at the coming disaster, and realize what you've lost.
You keep handing out horseshoes.
Horseshoes have gotta be tossed."
from "Horseshoes" by Moxy Fruvous
This year's edition of the Denver Broncos is an enigma to me. They have great strengths, and glaring weaknesses, and each rears its head at different times. In one game, they can't stop the run. In another, they stonewall the run, but can't convert a 3rd down to save their lives. In another, 3rd down conversion is amazing, but they can't get it done in the red zone. Every time I focus on a weakness, it seems to improve at the expense of something that wasn't a problem before. I feel like I'm patching up a junker car, or like I've just bought a money-pit. Perhaps the most apt analogy is this: I feel like I'm trying to stack hamsters.
Who knows what the problems will be today versus the Jets. Perhaps today is the day the Broncos gel and execute complementary football. I hope so. But there has been one weakness I have seen continually over the 5 games the Broncos have played, and this trend is dangerous. I hope to see it improved today.

"Kyle Orton's doing a solid job, he's a solid football player....I am just tempted to go with the Denver Broncos against the Colts....I think it's going to be a much tougher game for the Colts."
Jamie Dukes, NFLN
Twilight Zone. Bizarro World. The Matrix. Whatever alternate universe we've fallen into, Jamie Dukes is respecting the Broncos. I'm very uncomfortable with this.
Redskins/Cowboys open thread
They're both NFC, and we don't even play either team this year. But I think the fact that Mike Shanahan is coaching the 'skins makes this game worth a post on MHR.
I'm interested to see if Shanahan has changed his philosophy at all since he coached the Broncos. I know he did some recon with Pittsburgh to maybe try to learn some new tricks. I want to see if he did. Comment here if you're interested!
AFC West Preseason Analysis
This is less an informative post than it is a request for information and analysis. Anyone who saw the Raiders, Chargers, and Chiefs preseason games, please provide your thoughts. I am particularly interested in how you think the Chiefs have improved or not, and how McClain and Campbell are doing with the Raiders. My impressions, correct or not, are laid out after the jump.
Legend: The Beginning.
They faced off. The good-natured jabs and spirited words echoed as meaningless fireflies amidst distant trees. All that remained of the hours of meetings and film and playbook studying was a dripping intensity. Two men remained, each assigned to best the other on the field of war. Their stances were solid. Fortified. Impenetrable. Then the count came, like the crack of a starting gun a half-mile away. Movement came first, and then sound, slowly, in a vague rumble of molasses into drunkenness, becoming a trudge in muddy snow. So it seemed to them both. Suddenly the speed caught up to them. The rush of blood, the whoosh of air over helmet ear-holes, and the crunch of pads and bones heralded the dawn of the 2010 training camp for the Denver Broncos. The crunch of pads and bones. Bones. Crunch of bones.
It became a familiar theme. A mantra really. Was it Karma for some affront to the universe? Every fan felt it. Even the stoic and those patently irreverent to superstition began clandestine campaigns to rap upon wood, ritualize daily routines, and pray a little harder in blind hope that the spate of injuries to their team might cease. Star-crossed didn't begin to describe it. No NFL team had ever undergone such a deluge of snakebites.
Intensity. Toughness. Conditioning. Physicality. Training. Execution. The two had chanted the same words, coach's words, player's words, words they'd heard since childhood, since before they knew how to block or rush the passer or what a route was. Hit hard. Be tough. Remember fundamentals. Focus on details! The small things. Win your battle. Beat your man. Earn your spot. The two men knew they were on the same team. But one shot of missed balance, one awkward punch of gravity, where earth meets flesh, resulted in sudden agony. It happened again. And again.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. The silver lining. The others get a chance; their shot to prove their mettle. They step up. They face off. One picks himself up slowly. One leaves the field, damaged, limping, resentful, bitter that his body won't allow him to compete again today. Like aged relics from a forgotten time, their brittle shells betray them. They want to fight, but they must save the fight for another day. Another year. Another lifetime.

MHR Grab-Bag: Dez, Ted Bartlett, and 1st Round Rookies
There exist some subjects in need of analysis and discussion. The topics are varied as the fans on this site.
I notice that no fanshot has been posted regarding Dez Bryant's recent antics. It seems Mr. Bryant refused to carry "#1" Roy Williams' pads in from practice. While I agree it's stupid to have the guy carry another players' pads on a pro team, I also think that rookie initiations, hazing, etc. are fine, and Dez is showing his contrarian nature by doing this. I believe this will be indicative of future issues. Enjoy your fancy WR, Dallas. What do you think, MHR?
Mock Season - Broncos@Jags FINAL SCORE POSTED!
UPDATE: FINAL SCORE IS POSTED. The most informative part of this post should be the next phase: the deconstruction. Analyze what happened. Discuss the plays. Which ones were realistic, and which ones were ridiculously optimistic? Most intriguing to me was the swapping out of quarterbacks. Is this plausible? Those of you who love to second-guess coaching decisions, let's hear it! Give your reasoning for thinking plays are ridiculous.
ORIGINAL POST: How would YOU mock up the first game of the season? How do you think Coach McDaniels will set the roster, call the plays, and how will Jax respond? As a pass time in this non-season part of the of-season, I thought it would be interesting to mock a game, sort of like a mock draft.
Follow me after the jump for the rules and regs, and let's see if we can accurately predict some of what we'll see from the 2010 Broncos in context!

A Brief History of Doom's Agent
Elvis Dumervil's agent is named Gary Wichard. The last time we had cause to really get to know an agent up close and personal, it was our buddy Bus Cook, Jay Cutler's agent. I definitely don't want to go through that again. I am not sure how much of Cutler's behavior was due to Cook's recommendations, but I know we don't want a repeat of the 2009 offseason.
Here is a brief look at Gary Wichard and his history of big contract deals. First, We'll look at who Wichard represents. Then, we'll take some comps from previous years. We'll look at the contract amount, the length of the terms, the timeframe of the signing, and we'll also look for a pattern in Wichard's actions to try to discern his negotiation tactics.
Jump on it!

Raiders seeking to sue Russell for sucking?
Schadenfreude + Raiders = great day in Broncos country. Apparently Al feels like he got a bad return on his investment. Imagine that!
Delhomme Visiting Denver
According to the Browns' Twitter, recently released Panthers QB Jake Delhomme may be headed to Denver for a visit with the Broncos.
Whatever Happened to Class?
I had the NFL network on this morning as I drifted in and out of consciousness due to a NyQuil induced semi-lucid state, and I swear I thought I heard the announcers referring to Al Davis in the past tense, and giving all kinds of shouts out to him. It sounded like the type of commentary newscasters gush after a celebrity has died.

McDaniels Making All the Right Moves in 2010
I frequent Horvil Tiki's site often, and I usually find P. P. Dublinski a ridiculous blowhard. However, this particular opinion blog post is so on-cue with my thoughts that I had to post it here at MHR.
I am not as certain about the Marshall situation as he is, in that I would like to see Scheff and Marshall remain Broncos and contribute happily. But if it's not to be, then this column expresses my opinion on the whole thing.

Pre-game post UNTIL there is a real one.
Since I have been banned by Karma from the main game day post, I live for the pregame, and I'm here early, and I figured I'd try to hang out with whoever is here. So..... talk about the game today vs. the Colts until the front page pre-game post is up.
I like our chances against Indy, and I'll be satisfied, albeit disappointed, if we lose close. I'll be bitter about a blowout, but I'll be ECSTATIC with a win. I see that Manning has a sore glute. I hope he has it padded, because once he meets The King, he will be sitting on his butt a LOT. GO BRONCOS!
Segregated Positive Game Day Thread
OK, we talked about this last week. There are two factions: people who are exceptionally emotional, and those of us who want a game day thread focused on analysis. Here is the alternative to the regular post for those who wish to hang around with positive posts about our Broncos. If you don't want to be positive, or don't see any reason to, no problem. Just go to the regular front page game day thread.
However, if you choose to hang out in this post, please abide by the following guidelines (After the jump):
cant even get 5 yard what give. THAT IS CORNY GUY. We cant buy a 5 yard run guy. can buy 5 dollar foot long but no 5 run guy. not even 5 yard run.

NFL Network Publicly Apologizes to McDaniels for selling him short.
I was shocked. I was watching NFL Network, unusual for me after a loss. The transition from the VIkings/Packers segment was weird! The screen went black, and the words "Dear Josh" appeared, scrawled in blue and orange across the TV.

Divisional Opponents from the Broncos Perspective: Chiefs/Eagles
Maybe no one is around this early but I like to discuss these division games with the MHR regulars. So, if you feel so inclined, POST AWAY!!!! I'm watching the Eagles and Chiefs game, but if you are watching another one, post as well. We don't need to be as focused in this thread as we are in the Broncos game open thread. Thanks!
DIscussion after the jump!
Bears/Packers from the Bronco Perspective
I thought it would be fun to discuss the Green Bay vs. Chicago game. I realize the game has nothing to do with the Broncos, but hey, I think we all know there is a vested interest in this game. I'm excited, and I like talking football with my MHR friends, so please join in and lets have a discussion or an argument! If this is foolish, I'll rely on Guru to take post down. Discuss after the jump!

Cutler Ostracizes Himself in Chicago
I have a little inside information from the Bears organization. One of my trusted coworkers was a high school coach of one of the Bears players (I do not want to name names of either player or coach here, because I do not want to potentially damage their relationship or prevent myself from getting further inside info). The player is quite a leader on the Bears team. Below the fold is what he told my coworker regarding Jay Cutler recently.

Interesting Anagrams
Some believe that anagrams tell many things about people and events. I have derived anagrams from several key issues to the Broncos right now. This may be pointless, but I thought it was fun, and I thought I'd share. Look below the fold for mystic anagram answers to questions regarding Orton, McDaniels, Cutler, and the Trade.
