I grew up in Phoenix and have followed the team from 1970. I live in Maverick-land, which is hard to take, but enjoy my Suns on TV and gamecasts.

The legend of the Phoenix (Suns)
This team is clearly in a rebuilding mode. To reman relevant on the NBA scene, we need to make Phoenix once again an attractive destination. How have we done this in the past? What does the past tell us about the future?

Can of worms: resting uninjured stars causes playoff angst
This time of year is when teams begin gearing up for the playoffs. One thing that invariably happens, is as teams clinch, they begin resting players, adjusting their rotations, and generally playing havoc with betting line s and causing angst fantasy owners.
The Phoenix Football Suns
I was idly thinking about the football season, and my mind started wandering back to our beloved Suns. I began to think of our players and how they compare to their pigskin counterparts.
Feel fr\ee to trash my comparisons, add new ones, and it's on to the Super Bowl, er NBA finals! (All in good fun)

Who is going to get the eighth spot in the West?
With all of the moaning and groaning going on, and the curious trend of fans of other teams posting here (Warrior, Blazers, Spurs, Lakers, etc.), I thought it prudent to create a reasoned discussion on our chances in the upcoming season. Specifically, the eighth spot, which I believe is ours barring injuries.
Gutless Suns succumb to Mavs' bullying
I hate to say it, but the Suns' refusal to stand up for a teammate is what I think sparked the loss

Draftees in the NCAA tournament
At the risk of being accused of giving up the season, I thought it prudent to start a thread on the players that might be available to us with our pick, which will either be #14 or #16. Since the end of the regular season is a month away, and the tournament is upon us, we should at least know what we are talking about when we discuss the options. Courtesy of the stumbling economy, I find myself out of a job, which will enable me to see most of the games.

Rodney Rodgers news
I will always remember him in his Suns days. He had a great 6th man year before we traded him to the Celtics for Joe Johnson.
Selling draft picks
I know many here think D'A wouldn't have played these guys, but I think it is time for Sarver to acknowledge the grave damage he has done to the franchise in selling draft picks...
Flagrant fouls. Does the penalty fit the crime?
Flagrant fouls have become a joke in the NBA, and it is time to come up with an idea to reduce or eliminate them, This is not hockey.
Player combinations: what makes them great?
Recently Shaq said in a Paul Coro article that he and Kobe were “the best one-two punch in the history of the game”. That got me thinking. We need some definitions here. For instance, is this for one season, or for a whole career? How do you measure the career stat? Most championships? Also, what defines a great one-two combinations? A point guard/center (5/1)? Two forwards (3/4)? A 2/3 combo? Let’s look at some candidates.

Clips and Sonics trade
Apparently the Clippers are so enamored with Riussell Westbrook, they traded with Seattle to make sure they get him. #4 goes to the Clips in exchange for the #7 and next years #1. Seattle wants Brook Lopez.
Guess that meant the Barbs for #7 and Maggette is by the boards. Now LA keeps Magette and loses perhaps the #15 in a weak draft next year. Do you think we missed out? Maggette may have been just a rental, but the pick might have been Joe Alexander.

Is everyone on vacation? Draft coming up.
Iam not going to try and repeat all of the draft recaps we have seen. There are a lot of angles to this draft, both for the league as a whole, and the Suns in particular.
Where is everyone? Are you all still in letdown mode? It is like a funeral. Nobody posting except PStan, ZF, and MikeL, maybe a few commenting. I can go a day without seeing new posts or comments. I am not terribly disappointed in the season's ending. The bottom line, our multimillionaires didn't deserve it. Much like the Dbacks don't deserve to be in first place.
The roundballers simply got caught up in three main issues: The coaching/GM rift, the big trade, and the resulting lack of identity, which can make any team look like pussycats (See Lakers performance vs. Detroit a few years back, when Shaq and the pouiting Kobe got shellacked by the no-name Pistons).
The coaching/GM problem has been addressed. The trade, while not initially successfull, needs a whole season to be judged. The identity part? It is being forged right now.
As we see the draftees being picked apart, I feel confident that our braintrust will get a valuable rotation player for the #15, and maybe an eventual starter. I feel that we should keep Barbs and Boris for a year in Porter's system unless someone blows our doors off with an offer of an all-star like Memphis did with Gasol.
The one thing I would like to do is get a later pick (16-21). Wouldn't it be good to get Lopez or Green AND Nick Batum or Koufos?
You go for it, JJ!
Now that the Suns are out and the draft pick is locked in, I say we all give a shout out to a very talented and deserving former Sun, Joe Johnson.

Game Recap: Suns Slam Celtics 85-77 With a New Energy
This game was a great test, but Suns fans have to be thrilled with the result...
It was with much anticipation that I sat down to watch the Friday tilt between the C's and our Sunnies, and it didn't take long for me to get a feeling of déjà vu. I felt this was the most meaningful game between these two teams since the memorable '76 finals. The Suns came out with fire in their bellies at the US Airways Center Friday night. With Shaq in the fold, the team seems to have a new energy and an attitude that wouldn't back down. This was typified by the back and forth between Amare and Garnett. Shaq has definitely brought an attitude.
The Suns came out of the block in typical Suns fashion, with Amare hitting 14 in the first quarter. If it wasn't for the terrible butterfingers (11 turnovers), the 1st would have been about 40-13 instead of 23-13. The first half was a game of runs, but the Celtic run of 20-6 was mainly a cavalcade of Suns turnovers, as a broken Celtic offense sputtered all night. I was particularly excited to see the 18-4 first quarter rebound margin. You say what? This is the Suns we are talking about. Well, these aren't your dad's Phoenix Suns. Shaq has brought a new work ethic that we rarely have seen. Many of us fans have long been frustrated at our underachieving team that often had overwhelming talent, but always found a way to lose the last game of the year.
I saw Diaw playing passing lanes. I viewed Grant Hill playing like he has found Ponce De Leon's fountain of youth. I saw Amare play good body-up defense with Garnett. I saw LB's eyes light up at the open lanes that Shaq is creating. I saw the whole team play scrappy defense, standing up to the thuggery of Glen Davis and Kendrick Perkins. And then there was the exchange between STAT and KG, followed soon after by Perkins' body slam of Amare. Boston was frustrated. They did not expect the Suns to stand up to them on defense. They probably get their scouting reports from Charles Barkley, who is fond of saying that Phoenix plays no defense.
Looking at the stats, Amare had another monster game, 28 and 6, and Hill's double-double was a consistent boost. Nash killed the C's with a few dagger 3s. There was one sequence that typified the game for me:
Ball's loose, scramble around midcourt, Bell digs it out, gets it to Nash, shot clock running down, Nash is gonna have to shoot, launches a 40 footer, off the back of the rim, rebound by Grant Hill! Gets it out to Nash, and the Suns call a time out.
When was the last time you saw the Suns hustle like that? That's got to hurt Boston's morale..
Player of the Game:
I have to give it to Amare. He set the tone early, shaking off a bad cold and taking it to KG from the start. He avoided early fouls, and did not let the Celt's rough play knock him out of his zone.
Runner up:
It was between Grant Hill or Shaq, but I have to give it to Shaq. His presence set the tone, and his 14 rebounds continued to send the message to the league: This team will no longer take prisoners.
For the Celts:
Most of the C's let their butterfingers, bad shooting, and their surprise at the Suns' play take them out of their game. But I was impressed with Rajon Rondo. I think it is time to admit that the trade of Rondo was a big goof.

New strategies in GM-ing
Lately we have seen some trades that point out some interesting possibilities
Kidd to Dallas
Well, Well, Well. We thought Cuban wouldn't do it. This is the season of "Can you top this trade? "Anything you can do, I can do better....
Utah got Korver
LA got Gasol
We got Shaq
SA got Mighty Mouse
Dallas gets Kidd
It is NO, Hou,, and Denver on the trade clock...
Boston
I know this is a suns blog, but if we succeed in winning the West, there is a good chance we may play the Celtics....
The Impossible Poll
[I'll bump the game thread back up to the top in a bit, but this made me laugh so hard I nearly spewed soda on the keyboard. Without a doubt the best reaction I've ever gotten to a poll on this site. -TexSUN]
Hard choices
I saw the poll about which team we hate the most, Lakers or Spurs. My first reaction was, "Yeah, I like polls. I'll take a poll." Then I read the question, and my mind froze. I got a far away look in my eyes, and felt a little moisture run out of the corner of my mouth. My palms started to sweat. Which to choose? I looked at the question. Lakers or Spurs. Hate. More. Paper or Plastic. Oh, I have a terrific headache.
I....just...don't ....know.... So.... hard... to...choose. Help.....me....I ...honestly... don't... know! Please... Don't... make...me...choose.
My wife saw the pained look on my face and looked at me questioningly as I began to cower in the corner, mumbling, Not....Fair. Can't choose. Bad dog... Bad dog...leave alone. My wife approached and pressed a glass of water in my hand as I was shaking. "You really need to spend less time on the computer, honey", my wife said. She splashed a little of the cold water on my face. Hey.... As I snapped back to reality, it hit me that the website poll had asked the impossible, that I should choose between two equally odious choices. I shook my head as my eyes fell on the headline in the morning paper announcing the predicted party nominees for the election in the fall.
I shivered and let out a soft whimper.
