The Bengals interest in McCoy
I personally like McCoy but I just can't see us taking him in the 2nd round which is where he is projected. I agree that TE is a major need for us but I feel we can get someone close to his potential in later rounds. If we are interested in taking a TE in the 2nd round why don't we take a shot at Olsen from Chicago which they are rumored to want.
The Way I see the draft unfolding.........
- FS - Mays
- CB - Cook
- WR - Gilayrd
- TE - Moeaki
- DT - Owens
- DE - Alem
- FB - Connor
I have us taking Mays in the first round if he is available but I think DE - Griffen, DT - Price or DT- Willimas would all be a good pick up as well. The second round pick is a little tricky the top TE will probably be gone and I think it's to early to take McCoy. I like DT - Alualu and DT- Houston but with the signing of Tank I think we can get one later in the draft. Cook is a strong tall CB and with our schedule next year we need more corners. This is assuming Mardy falls this far which is really just wishful thinking. I think getting Moeaki in the 4thround would be a great get especially with his familiarity with a pro style offense. DE - Alem helps fill in rotation and gets us more young legs. I also considered taking WR - Easley who is tall and fast but I chose DE. The last pick is again wishful thinking because I believe he is the best FB in the draft but I've seen many lists that have him available at this point.
Give me some feedback..................................................
Hammer's top 32
I thought about my recent comments regarding the Bengals and Round 1 and decided I first should have ranked my top 32 prospects and go from there. The following is my pre-combine and pre-pro day top 32 list:
- DT - Suh - Nebraska
- DT - McCoy - Oklahoma
- S - Berry - Tennessee
- OT - Okung - Oklahoma State
- CB - Haeden - Florida
- OT - Davis - Rutgers
- DE - Morgan - Georgia Tech
- WR - Bryant - Oklahoma State
- OT - Bulaga - Iowa
- RB - Spiller - Clemson
- QB - Clausen - Notre Dame
- ILB - McClain - Alabama
- OT - Williams - Oklahoma
- DE - Pierre-Paul - USF
- FS - Thomas - Texas
- DE - Dunlap - Florida
- DT - Price - UCLA
- OT - Campbell - Maryland
- DT - Williams - Tennessee
- QB - Bradford - Oklahoma
- DE/OLB - Graham - Micigan
- DE - Griffen - USC
- OLB - Kindle - Texas
- WR - Tate - Notre Dame
- OG - Iupati - Idaho
- FS - Mays - USC
- DT - Ordick - Penn State
- CB - Jackson - Alabama
- RB - Dwyer - Georgia Tech
- ILB - Spikes - Florida
- TE - Gresham - Oklahoma
- CB - Wilson - Boise State
This has some things I found interesting: In my earlier post regarding the Bengals first round pick I made a comment about WR Thomas from Georgia Tech and him shooting up draft boards after a strong combine workout, well that was until he got hurt and fell out of my top 32.
I'm also not too sure what to do with QB Bradford. If he had come out last year he was likely the first QB off the board but with his injury there is a big question mark until his pro-day and we see him make all the throws. I have Clausen in my top 10 due to his confidence, arm strength and knowledge of a pro system.
I left out WR Williams from USC and WR Benn from Illinois but I think both could sneak in the top with a strong workout.
I'm also very high on three running backs, Matthews from Fresno State, Dixon from Mississippi State and Best from California. I put Dwyer in front of the them for now but they all could shoot up if they get questions answered. Can Matthews catch out of the backfield? Is Dixon fast enough and have enough burst to get to second level? Can Best hold up in the NFL?
You might see CB Jackson from Alabama and Wilson from Boise State and ask why. I'm just impressed with both of their cover abilities even though they both gave up big plays.
This is how I see it until the combine and pro-days keep a lookout for my new list as well as updated Bengals first round and second round picks.
The Hammer Weighs in on the Draft Round 1
Round 1.I've seen plenty of mock drafts and I keep saying the same thing with the Bengals taking a TE,DT or WR. I agree those are three areas that need to be addressed especially TE. I, however, feel the TE position can be addressed later in the draft or through free agency. I can't see spending a first round pick on a TE and who knows if the only first round potential Jermaine Gresham is even healthy enough.
DT is something we can always use, keeps our LB's free to roam and do what they do best. WR is obviously a big need as we still need a number 2 that eventually could overtake Ocho as the main guy. Bryant will be gone, Gilyard isn't a first round guy, Tate has great potential but is short but can anyone say Desean Jackson? Williams from USC is a Ocho clone and has good size but I'm interested in the Thomas kid from GT. He played in a running offense but has tremendous size and strength the question is can he run. If he runs well I see him being a first rounder. Another position which I haven't seen is DE since we need more pressure on the QB. I think the the best pass rushers will be gone by the time we pick but a guy like Graham (Michigan) or Griffen (USC) will be available although I'm not 100% sold on Griffen.
With all that said I would like to see in order - FS - Thomas (Texas) , DT - Williams (Tenn), DT - Price (UCLA), FS - Mays (USC), WR - Thomas (GT - if he runs well), WR - Tate (Notre Dame), WR - Willims (USC), DE/OLB Graham (Michigan)
