Despite instability among its members and the recent termination of Commissioner John Marinatto, Big East leaders suggest the television network attention shows the league still has the ability to land a lucrative contract that justifies a reformed lineup stretching from California to Connecticut.... the league will have teams in 13 of the top 50 media markets spanning four time zones in 2013.
Looks like our island of misfit toys might stick together after all. Reports from the Big East spring meetings indicate that school officials seemed pleasantly surprised by the TV rights pitches made by NBC and Fox Sports yesterday. Down with ESPN.

"When I think about how breathtaking and speechless I’m going to be — I still don’t know whether I’m going to cry or smile — I think I finally feel like a part of that family. Like I finally did what I came here to do when I signed my scholarship."
-- Jeff Green
Congrats to Jeff Green and the Georgetown Class of 2012. Wow, I'm old.
Report: Kentucky to Play Georgetown at the Verizon Center
Andy Katz is reporting that Kentucky and Georgetown are likely to meet this upcoming season as part of the Big East-SEC Challenge. He states:
The Big East still has to decide if 14 schools will participate in the Big East-SEC Challenge instead of 12. Based on conversations with multiple sources, the highest-profile game that could occur is Kentucky at Georgetown. I wouldn't be surprised to see Louisville at Florida, Marquette at Missouri, and Tennessee at Notre Dame. But those last four appear to be more speculation at this point. The most likely matchup is UK-GU.
After the San Diego State / Midway Carrier debacle, I am hesitant to get too excited about a supposed game. Georgetown gets last dibs on prime Verizon Center spots after the Wizards, Capitals, and Jonas Brothers. But since there is nothing else to write about, I shall indeed throw caution to the wind and pretend like this game has been etched in stone.
A "Fair and Balanced" Look from the Syracuse Perspective: Pete Thamel on the NCAA's Inquiry Into Nerlens Noel's Recruitment
Remember that time that investigative reporting used to report the results of thorough and unbiased investigations? Yeah, me neither. Take the works of one Pete Thamel, a national college sports reporter for The New York Times and a graduate of Syracuse University. It seems that Thamel is incapable of publishing anything that can ever be deemed fair and balanced.
In March 2012, Thamel penned a piece on the top basketball recruit in the Class of 2012, Nerlens Noel. At the time Noel was deciding between attending Syracuse, Kentucky, Georgetown, North Carolina, and Connecticut. In this 4,500+ word composition, Thamel suggested improprieties surrounding the recruitment of Noel. The piece was extensive and covered all corners. He wrote about how Providence College hired Chris Driscoll, a "handler" that was close to Noel as an assistant coach. He linked Kentucky coach John Calipari to a "low-level agent" vying for Noel's professional business. He even revealed Noel's favorite snack: Cheez-Its; EGAD! Yet when it came to one name, Errol Randolph, Thamel failed to go beyond describing the man as just "an unassigned teacher" at Noel's high school. Odd.

As a competitor, it’s so disheartening to go to these various schools throughout the conference and check out these state-of-the-art, expansive facilities. When you compare those facilities to the meager accommodations at McDonough, you can’t help but frown… Beyond that, it is even more frustrating to be a member of one of the 29 teams that is forced to share this small space that is McDonough… We all work hard in practice and we smell like hard work after practice, and that just litters the building as various teams are in the hallway… It’s pretty awful.
-- Monica McNutt speaking to the DC Zoning Commission about the athlete experience at Georgetown. Markel Starks, Jeff Green, and John Thompson III also spoke.
The Commission approved the proposed Intercollegiate Athletic Center. Now all is left is getting architectural approval from the Old Georgetown Board and D.C. Fine Arts Commission. Oh yeah, and fundraising.
So You're Saying That Conference Realignment Was Pointless, Eh?
Looks like the BCS as we know and hated it is on its deathbed, according to CBS Sports.
The post linked in the title gives a great synopsis of what this means for Georgetown, the Big East, and America.
Class of 2012 Center Robert Upshaw Chooses Fresno State
Robert Upshaw, a 7-foot center from San Joaquin High School (CA), has chosen to attend hometown school Fresno State. Upshaw, a 4-star player and currently the 12th best center in the Class of 2012, had previously committed to Kansas State but never signed a letter of intent, allowing him to reopen his recruitment after then Kansas State head coach Frank Martin left the school for South Carolina. At that time, Upshaw had also been considering Fresno State, Louisville and Georgetown.
After reopening his commitment, Upshaw released very little information regarding where he was looking. This led ESPN recruiting guru Dave Telep to name a hodgepodge list of potential suitors, including Georgetown, Kentucky, UNLV, Oklahoma State, USC, Oregon, Washington and others. In sum: no one knew what the hell was going on with Upshaw's recruitment, including his own mother.
It's Friday, Friday Open Thread
I'm burned out. This Nerlens nonsense has taken a lot out of me, and you as well I'm sure. It got so bad that CasualHoya has retreated to WEST VIRGINIA. WEST F'IN VIRGINIA. Home of NOTHING.

So in typical lazy blog fashion, we're posting a bunch of random things to discuss:
- Jack Jr. will be introduced to the Georgetown community today in Healy Circle
- Both Henry Sims and Jason Clark are playing very well at Portsmouth; Henry scored 12 points on 5-13 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds while Jason scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting and posted 6 rebounds
- The on-campus Athletic Facility received approval from the Old Georgetown Board and now goes before the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Bureaucracy!
- Five-star prospect Devonta Pollard is on-campus this weekend
- The Washington Nationals have one of the best records in baseball this year
- Undecided whether I will watch that new HBO show "Girls." What is it? Is it another Sex and the City, or is it like Entourage? I will, however, be tuned in to the new episode of Game of Thrones.
- Is there a .gif on the Internet that has not been posted on this blog yet?
The Flattop Spurns The Hilltop. Prized Recruit Nerlens Noel Chooses Kentucky over Georgetown and Syracuse
Color me shocked. The top-ranked high school basketball player in the country will be calling Lexington his home next season. Nerlens Noel, a 6'10'' center from Massachusetts, announced tonight on national television that after deliberating with his family, he has chosen to attend the University of Kentucky. He had also been considering Syracuse and Georgetown.
In an attempt to be objective on this oh-so-biased forum, let me first say that while terribly disappointed, I am not surprised by Noel's decision. Whether or not you agree with how Kentucky head coach John Calipari gets his recruits, there is no denying that the man knows how to build the brand of a college player. Whether it is John Wall, Anthony Davis or now Nerlens Noel, Calipari creates the most attention and hype for his players while on campus for their one-year apprenticeships. It is a tough recruiting pitch to ignore.
As for Georgetown and its fans, life will go on, quickly in fact. Five-star forward Devonta Pollard is set to visit campus this weekend and Class of 2012 center Robert Upshaw, who had previously committed to Kansas State, has re-opened his recruitment. It has also been reported that Coach John Thompson III will be meeting with Bradley Hayes, a 6'11'' center from Jacksonville, FL, next week.
Onwards and upwards, friends. Hoya Saxa.
And the plot thickens...
Nerlens Noel to Announce Decision on April 11th
Enjoy the next ten days!
It is being reported on Twitter that former Hoya Chris Wright has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The original report has not been confirmed or denied by any U.S. publication or Georgetown.
We'll have more as information becomes available. Thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his family.
UPDATE: Comment from Chris Wright via Twitter:
"Im overhwhelmed by everyone's concern about the posibility of me having MS but as of rite now nothing is certain and I would appreciate it if everyone will just let this issue rest, i would gladly appreciate it. Once again thanks for all the support, God bless!"

Why did the Hoyas lose? - Georgetown Hoyas - CBSSports.com RapidReports
Coach John Thompson III said the Hoyas lost to Cincinnati on Thursday in the Big East tournament quarterfinal because they fell short in the categories that help swing games. "To come here and lose when I think the key things were rebounds, turnovers, and then you put your foul shots in, and that's what different."

Hoya Prospectus: Recap: Seton Hall 73, Georgetown 55
The Hoyas came into the game leading the conference in effective field goal defense, having allowed a season-high 55% eFG against Pitt. So what Seton Hall did tonight [71% eFG] should be recognized as extraordinary. Only two other teams have managed to hit the 70% level against JT3's Georgetown Hoyas: the Ohio Bobcats and the Baylor Bears.
Defensive woes carry over for Hoyas - Georgetown Hoyas - CBSSports.com RapidReports
Hoyas coach John Thompson III said his team’s defensive woes in the 73-55 loss to Seton Hall carried over to the offense. "We thought we played pretty good perimeter defense, but we were atrocious tonight," he said. "They hit some shots early, we got frustrated early and that frustration carried over to our offense."

Maryland to Stop Scheduling Georgetown in ALL Sports Until Men's Basketball Series Happens
A Maryland-Georgetown series would be good for the DC area but this move will just hurt its chances of happening. Anyone that knows Georgetown knows that the folks in McDonough won't be pressured by a media battle. The riff between the two schools goes back a very long time and will take more than one lunch meeting to fix.
In the short term, Maryland finally conceded they need us more than we need them. I imagine a John Feinstein article will follow shortly.
