BUCS N BULLETS: I had to snap a pic of my TV & post this for your enjoyment. Just in case you missed tonight's rather uneventful game, the "Play That Made You Smile" was a short clip of the Pirates visit to a Navy Seal Training Base in SD. I nearly lost it when they showed the team posing for this photo op, machine guns in hand! Just look at Alvarez over on the far right! Awesome pic!!! Haha. If anyone at FSN is reading this & you happened to be there, can you please send Charlie a high res photo of this classic Bucs moment??? I want to frame it & hang it above the bar in my basement. Go Bucs!
I drove down to Carson City, NV last weekend to see Bryce Harper play a couple doubleheaders for the College of Southern Nevada. I brought the video camera to with me to catch the action on Saturday & get a good look at this guy. I'm sure you'd like to take a look as well.
It turned out to be a very memorable game, because not only did he play RF and hit a homer, but he also unexpectedly took the mound with the game tied headed into extra innings & pitched relief. I know his brother pitches for CSN, but this was the first time he ever pitched for CSN from what we could tell. It was hard to film from where I was sitting, so I just tried to focus on his mechanics at first. I'll let the Bucs Dugout experts handle the discussion & analysis.
Hope you all enjoy it, and let's hope the Nationals decide to pass on him!
Wasn't really sure where to post this, but this is what boredom, lots of caffeine & a copy of Photoshop led me to create the other night....DOC OCTAVIO! I'm not really sure what Dotel's nickname was before he got to Pittsburgh, but I'll be calling him Doc Ock from now on! Enjoy!
Sabermetrics 101
It's been quite a while since my first FanPost almost a year ago. For those for you who read that unfortunate drivel, I sincerely apologize. I was a rookie trying to play with the pros, and I quickly learned to take my place on the bench. But after a long stay at the kids dinner table, and quietly listening to the adults talk for quite some time, I'm proud to say I've come to understand more than I've ever known about our beloved Buccos, and the game in general. It's all thanks to the incredibly insightful (and civil) discussions that occur on BucsDugout everyday, so again, I thank you all for the continuing education. Everyday is a new lesson.
I've fully understood standard baseball statistics since I was a kid, but I'm still struggling to wrap my head around many of the detailed sabermetric comparisons that are often used in these posts, since any statistic really isn't that useful unless they're properly understood by the reader. Unfortunately, there's alot of discussions on here that just go right over my head. I'm really to the point now where I want to learn more about sabermetrics (WARP, OPS, BABIP, ISO, PECOTA, etc), I'm just not sure where to begin.
Since there's about 40 days until pitchers & catchers report, I'd like to do a little heavy reading in the meantime. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to read to get a foundation? I'm sure there's quite a few people out there in the same boat as me. There's alot of books & reference guides, such as Baseball Prospectus 2010 & Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract. There's just alot to sort through.
Since you guys are the experts & already have already demonstrated your firm understanding of the game, what do you guys read before the season starts? I greatly appreciate your suggestions! Can't wait for opening day! Go Bucs!
Raggedy Ann & Andy: Time to dump the LaRoche Sisters
The LaRoche Sisters (as my friends & I prefer to call them) are a combined 3-36 to start the season. Andy is still hitless & leads the team in errors. We've all come to expect Adam's yearly April & May batting cramps. Totally & utterly pathetic. The sisters appear to be the only stain on an otherwise exciting & promising Bucs lineup. This madness cannot continue. We all know their days in Pittsburgh are numbered, so let's just let them take their purses & go home to the farm.
Hinske & Vazquez can do better than this. Any thoughts?
