For all us out-of-towners, NHL Network has announced they will be picking up the ROOT Sports feed for tonights game. Good thing too, since Versus was going to only show the game after the Mtl-Bos Game 7.

PensBurgh Some Tuesday Links

Playoff Hockey inevitably brings these 'tweener day doldrums.  So I decided to spice it up with a collection of links from all around about the series.  I'll think about bringing in some other stories from around the league.

Looks like the Big East is throwing around TCU as a possible candidate for expansion. They are thinking that the Texas market is valuable enough to add TCU and the added presence of a top 5 football team will keep their conference relevant.

"Utah's offensive line pitched a shutout in Thursday's season-opening win over Pittsburgh. Facing a defense that led the nation in quarterback sacks a year ago, the Utes didn't give up a single one in their 27-24 overtime victory."

Block U Scouting UNLV

I DVR'd the UNLV vs Wisconsin game last Saturday and had a chance to sit down and "break down" some of the things I think the Utes will be up against this week.

I already posted this at another Ute fan site, so if you've already seen it...well...read it again I guess.

I will remind you that I am a football nut, and do not make an guarantees about the quality of my report...

"It is not an Achilles' (injury) and he is not ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs," Bylsma said after Saturday's skate. "He had a procedure to repair a tendon from a cut on the top of his foot and he will be day-to-day from here on out. So, it is not an out for the remainder of the playoffs." -- Head Coach Dan Bylsma

Staal injured, but 'not out for playoffs'

Coach also mentioned that TK and JLeo would be gametime decisions, though Leo most likely would not play since McKee has been "reliable."

U.S. viewership of the NHL playoffs increased 24 percent from 2009, the league's highest average first-round audience in 10 years.

The NHL said Friday that NBC and Versus combined to average 742,000 viewers per telecast. That's the most since ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 had 750,000 in 2000.

PensBurgh Some Thoughts in Preparation for the Break

The regular season still has 20-some-odd games left to play, and Pittsburgh is 2nd in the Atlantic and 4th in the East with a great possibility of edging out NJ for 1st and 2nd respectively.  Yet still the clamor and clang of the doomsayers' collective pots and pans banging together demanding attention have signaled a non-stop exchange on how "X and X players are deadweight, we need to get rid of them" or "X player is way overpaid, we need to dump him and get someone who can perform better", or (my personal favorite) "X fourth line player isn't scoring goals/dishing assists, we should waive 'em and get a Baby Pen up to fill the spot."

I'm here to put this all to rest and gather a couple of the more prominent arguments into one place.  If I have missed one, don't be shy about telling me so in the comments (along with a cleverly worded insult if you don't like my analysis, but don't just resort to common plebian style wit...spice it up.)

"Kunitz is doing well. We keep pushing him and going forward. He’s getting close. We are hopeful that he could possibly play over the weekend. So we will see on that. Max (Talbot) left practice today. We are waiting to hear exactly how that is. It’s obviously not a good sign in terms of him progressing forward."

The yo-yo wagon continues...

In other news, Gogo is still a Nogo, and Goddard maybe out along with TK (they missed practice on Wednesday).

Guerin is questionable (practiced, but no confirmation), but Talbot will play.

"You go through ups and downs in a season, and I didn't like how I was playing a couple of weeks ago. But I like how I'm playing now. I'm not going to worry about any contract stuff or anything right now. I just want to keep getting better and keep winning games."

Free-agency update ...

Beat reporter Rob Rossi gives the lowdown on activity between the Penguins and their players who can become unrestricted free agents on Wednesday:

LW Ruslan Fedotenko: No offer yet. He is seeking a multi-year deal. Talks will intensify today, though he is leaning toward testing the market.

D Rob Scuderi: Talks will continue today, but Scuderi will test the market. However, his camp will meet with Penguins one last time before making any final decision. He is seeking a multi-year deal.

D Hal Gill: His situation mirrors that for Scuderi.

C Mike Zigomanis: His camp was actively engaged in talks with Shero, and a deal could be reached before Wednesday.

RW Petr Sykora: No offer. However, the Penguins have not ruled out bringing him back.

RW Miroslav Satan: No offer. His return is unlikely. He will test the market.

D Philippe Boucher: No offer. His fate is tied into Scuderi and Gill. He will test the market.

G Mathieu Garon: No offer. He will test the market.

Versus has some of the best commercials, and this one turned out to be prophetic.

Just replace the last shot of Lidstrom hoisting the cup with the one of Sid, Geno, Staal, Flower, or Talbot...or anyone of the Penguins...

"Like every kid growing up, you play street hockey, you play in the outdoor rinks and you always dream of that opportunity. I've watched Game 7 on television and you dream of making it to the NHL, but playing in a Game 7 is something you dream about. We've got an amazing opportunity here."

Coach Bylsma on Game 6

"I like it being a defining moment," Bylsma said. "Everyone in that room should be ready to play their best game and make a difference, by doing what we do as a team. Everyone needs to be ready to have the puck on their stick and make THE play or make THE defensive play or block THE shot or make THE save. That's what we need. We need a defining game."

"We haven't really thought about it too much. We've heard all the chatter about him coming back. It doesn't change anything for us to be honest. Even if he does come back, we all have a lot of respect for the player he is but that being said, I don't know how effective he's going to be if he comes back and he's playing at whatever level he's playing at."

PensBurgh Pavel Datsyuk expected to play in Game 5: Will it hurt or help?

With the announcement today by Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock that forward, and NHL-MVP candidate, Pavel Datsyuk is expected in the line-up on Saturday for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, a question comes to mind: Will Datsyuk's return help or hinder his team in their quest for a back-to-back championship?

Tyler Kennedy on his Game 4 Goal

"With centers like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal, you have to learn quickly that after you pass the puck, you go to the net and if you don't put your stick down, you're crazy," Kennedy added. "On the goal, I raced to get the puck and gave it back to Kunny (Chris Kunitz) and then when I headed to the net and Chris gave it to Sid, I knew I had to get my stick down. I knew where the puck was going to go.

"That's all I had to do, because Sid just rang it in off my stick."

"Oh, I tell you, just this is not fun to watch. I take in lots of beer. But it's better when you play in the game and you be there with the teammates on the ice, try to help," he said.

[Pavel] Datsyuk blocked a shot in the Western Conference finals and has missed six straight games and looked during practice Wednesday like he was feeling much more comfortable.

The speculation is if Datsyuk does return, he would play on the wing instead of his natural center position. Not that it seems to be an issue for Datsyuk.

"I think [I'd play] at wing, center, defenseman, I want to play so bad," Datsyuk said. "I don't want to watch this game again."

One point and a minus-2 in the series. I would put that sentence all over his locker if I was his teammate. I'd repeat it over and over again in the dressing room and at any practice or morning skate. I wouldn't say anything else to him. Maybe get T-shirts made up for Game 4. One point and a minus-2. Put it on a Post-It on his steering wheel and on his perfect pushup, perfect pull-up and his tub of protein powder. Then, watch him respond in Game 4. If it's enough, we got a series.

PensBurgh Something that has been bothering me this series...

I have noticed a disturbing trend in Sidney Crosby's play in the last three games and am curious as to your (the collective community here at Pensburgh) thoughts.

Sid is a -2 with 1 point (in Game 3) and has yet to score a goal this series.  The talk of the media has been how Henrik Zetterberg has imposed his will on the Crosby line, thus negating the offensive power of the Penguins 1st line.  Indeed, Zetterberg has been matched up with Crosby for either all, or part of every shift (except in Game 3 where Coach Bylsma got the last change).

My Question to you has two parts to it:

  1. Is Sid rattled by the pressure that the Zetterberg/Lidstrom pairing put on him?
  2. Should Sid accept the challenge and quit trying to get away from the match up in order to focus on just playing his game.

I was impressed with a remark by Bylsma in the previous series against the 'Canes in which he mentioned that he and Sid were not worrying about particular match ups but instead were focusing on just sticking with the overall strategy of the Team.  I'm wondering how much Zetterberg is causing problems for Sid, because I feel Sid is a much better athlete than to be bothered to the point of...impotence.

Your thoughts?
