Redskins Rookie Mini Camp Recap

The team concluded their first mini camp of the season with 72 players in attendance. This included the team's 7 draft picks, 12 UDFA's, 5 first year players, and 48 tryout players. The full list of players can be found here. A few players were in attendance, but did not participate in drills like rookie RB Chris Thompson who is still recovering from an ACL injury, and will reportedly be ready for training camp. Jordan Reed didn't participate due to an injury from his final game in college.

Shanahan said Reed "had a little bit of a pull with the quad and a little bit of soreness in the knee because of the quad." Never practiced.

The chances of any of these tryouts getting on the 90 man roster are slim right now, and there were a few interesting names there this year. Alfred Morris's brother Shawn, a RB from Birmingham-Southern, was participating.

The biggest attraction at training camp was the rookies in the secondary. Safeties Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas were switching between free and strong on certain plays. Rambo played free and Thomas played strong for the majority of the time though. Here are some observations from the Washington Post.

Thomas and Rambo shared the field with Thomas lining up predominantly at strong safety and Rambo at free safety. There were times when the offensive formation and motions required Rambo to play up in the box while Thomas dropped back and played deep. Other times, they both played deep.

They certainly passed the eyeball test. Both boast good size, move with fluidity and good anticipation while backpedaling and changing directions, and then fly to the ball. They made decisions quickly and played fast.

Thomas recorded an interception over the middle of the field, and he also forced a fumble when in coverage of wide receiver Skye Dawson, who made a catch as he ran a slant. Thomas swatted and knocked the ball out of Dawson’s grasp, and scooped up the loose ball.

Rambo also had an interception downfield as he went up in traffic and wrestled a Ryan Radcliff pass away from wide receiver Jason Thompson.

At one point, Rambo backpedaled at the snap of the ball and then changed directions and closed in on wideout Antavian Edison, who made a catch on a short route. Rambo pulled up just as he got to the receiver because these are non-contact drills.

Rich Tandler also had a short write-up of his observations from the shortened practice today. Today's workout was the only one from the minicamp that was made available to the media. He made some observations on two receivers besides Lance Lewis.

—UDFA wide receiver Jason Thompson is tall (6 foot-3) and quite slender (190 lb.). He looks athletic moving around out there and made some decent cuts on simple pass patterns. Thompson dropped an easy one or two against no defenders but had good form in pulling the ball in.

—Skye Dawson, an UDFA out of TCU, hauled in a couple of long passes. He’s short, speedy and wears No. 16. But that’s as far as the Brandon Banks comparison goes, Dawson is bigger and seems to be a more natural receiver.

Mike Shanahan addressed the media briefly after the session, and Zac Boyer got some quotes and made some observations of his own.

Head coach Mike Shanahan was pleased to see Thomas and Rambo’s instincts take over despite having just a short time with the playbook. That could bode well for each player; the Redskins currently have an opening at free safety, and Brandon Meriweather, the starting strong safety, likely won’t be able to return from a torn ACL before the start of training camp.

"The good part about them is they’ve got the size and the athletic ability to play both positions," Shanahan said. "I think everybody knows what type of receiving skills they have and their ability to make plays, but I’ve seen enough out of them on film that I think both of them could do a great job at the strong safety position as well as the free safety position. That’s what you’re looking for when you draft them, and hopefully it plays out that way.

Let’s look more closely at Thomas’ interchangeability. He played strong safety for most of rookie camp, he said, while Rambo played free safety. Fresno St. often used Thomas in the box, and when deep in passing situations, he frequently played to the wide side of the field.

“Even though I feel like I can do both, they had me playing in the box this weekend, doing some calls,” Thomas said. “They also had me up high, too. But doing all the quarters coverages and the Cover-1s and everything, it’s just really similar to what I did at Fresno St. So I came in feeling really comfortable.”

How quickly Thomas learns the Redskins’ calls and alignments will help determine his playing time. He also must prove he can defend the deep third as a free safety. Coaches believe he can; but he’ll have to prove it in the coming months. That is one of the team’s most intriguing storylines moving forward.

John Keim also shared his take on the rookie camp.

Shanahan said Rambo and Thomas scored well on his personality test he gives to rookies. I’ve heard from other coaches how well this test is at gauging a player’s success (or at least how he’ll work). Shanahan said the rookie safeties scored a 9 and a 10 out of 10. He did not say which one scored the 10, but the point was they both scored well.

This week's draft tracker has some new additions for prospects and mock draft sources. I've included Mel Kiper's mock, but I didn't add Todd McShay's because it was done before Fred Davis was resigned, and he projected TE Gavin Escobar to the Redskins. Some new players this week are NT John Jenkins and WR Da'Rick Rogers. OT/OG Dallas Thomas was also added which seems to be a big reach in the 2nd round.

The popular name this week is CB Darius Slay who has been rising in the last few weeks, and some analysts consider him to be a better prospect than teammate Johnthan Banks who was also mocked to the Skins this week. Another notable trend this week, where are the safeties? There is not a single safety projected to the Redskins in this sampling of mock drafts. Cornerback is becoming the most common position mocked to us, even with the recent signing of EJ Biggers, and resigning of Deangelo Hall. What position will the Redskins address with their first pick in the 2013 Draft?

Thomas plays with excellent knee bend, giving him the base to handle powerful bull rushers, as well as the spring to easily move left and right to remain square to quicker pass rushers. Thomas has an explosive punch that he uses often to knock defenders back in the running game. He steps up quickly to seal off the reeling defender and erase him from the play. Thomas exhibits good effort to get to the second level. He proved his mental toughness and team-first approach by agreeing to the position change as a senior. Thomas plays with excellent knee bend, giving him the base to handle powerful bull rushers, as well as the spring to easily move left and right to remain square to quicker pass rushers. Thomas has an explosive punch that he uses often to knock defenders back in the running game. He steps up quickly to seal off the reeling defender and erase him from the play. Thomas exhibits good effort to get to the second level. He proved his mental toughness and team-first approach by agreeing to the position change as a senior. Is physically tough, as well, having started the final 37 consecutive games of his career. WEAKNESSES: While Thomas has demonstrated some of the traits necessary to move back to offensive tackle and be successful, there are reasons why he was moved inside. For one, Thomas is susceptible to speed rushers, as lacks the sustained foot speed to earn top grades as a pass blocker. He gets an aggressive punch in but often stops moving his feet as he does so and therefore if his punch doesn't stop the pass rush entirely, leaving himself vulnerable to an outside speed rush or quick counter back inside. Thomas can get himself in trouble by playing too low, on occasion, as well, giving savvy defenders ample opportunity to simply "swim" over the top of him with a quick arm-over move. Finally, while demonstrating good lateral agility in pass protection, Thomas has a consistent hitch when attempting to pull, making himself much better suited to a power drive-blocking scheme than a zone-blocking attack that asks him to consistently get to and make adjustments to moving targets at the second level. The 2013 NFL Draft is less than a month away, and free agency has been underway for over two weeks now. There is still a lot of uncertainty about who will be available to the Redskins when they pick at #51 in the 2nd round. Players values continue to rise and fall, and the names that are mocked continue to fluctuate.

Some new names on the list this week are DL Johnathan Hankins, and OL Kyle Long. Both of these players are considered potential 1st round picks, and they could contribute to this team immediately. There were also several new options in the secondary, with a lot of turnover from the previous Mock Draft Tracker.

Free Agency is fully underway, and as expected, the Washington Redskins are severely limited in the market due to the second consecutive $18 million cap penalty. The team has resigned a number of their own free agents, signed two offensive tackles, and made the notable cut of CB Deangelo Hall. There are still plenty of options in free agency, but the Redskins ability to free up more cap space will determine the number and quality of players they are able to sign.

This weeks roundup of mock drafts continues the theme of the Redskins looking to restock their secondary after last years underwhelming performance. Some surprising names have appeared like potential 1st round picks Johnthan Banks and Matt Elam. There are also two new OT's on the list with the athletic Menelik Watson and Terron Armstead being added.

It's been about 3 weeks since the last time I took a look around the web to see what players are being mocked to the Redskins in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL Draft. A lot of things have changed and a lot have stayed the same. The Combine has influenced the stock of many players, and many mock drafts will reflect that.

Phillip Thomas continues to be a popular name linked to the Redskins. He has however dropped 20 spots on CBS Sports overall prospect rankings in the last few weeks. Another popular name linked to the Redskins has been Jonathan Cyprien. He had a strained hamstring at the Combine and did not participate in drills, but has actually risen 5 more spots. He seems to be out of the Redskins range at this point.

There are many new names, and some new positions in this weeks roundup. Who would you want the Redskins to pick, and who isn't on this list that should be considered?

A new week brings a new round of mock drafts from around the web. There have been some new mock drafts added, and some new players and positions have been mocked for the Redskins 2nd Round Pick. Phillip Thomas remains a popular pick among both Redskins fans, and draft prognosticators.

The biggest riser of the week has been safety Jonathan Cyprien. Last week he was CBS Sports 102nd prospect and this week he has jumped up to #47. The 55 spot gain is huge and he definitely opened some eyes at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.

There have been a lot of mock drafts posted on Hogs Haven over the last week, and everyone is envisioning a new set of rookies being drafted by the Redskins this season. Not having a 1st round draft pick this year makes it more difficult to predict who our 1st draft pick will be this year. It also limits the amount of mock drafts that have a Redskins pick since many sites only mock 1 round at this point.

I've compiled a list of a few mock drafts from around the web that include a wide variety of players and positions for the Redskins 2nd round pick(#51 overall). There are players in the secondary, defensive line, offensive line and a few wide receivers in the mix. I think Swearinger is one of the top safeties in the draft and could sneak into the 2nd round, and he definitely won't be there when we pick in the 3rd. Can play both safety positions, excellent tackler, and has good coverage skills.

His draft stock has shot up this week and looks like a 3rd or 4th round pick right now. A very physical player that will bring some attitude to the secondary. The combination of Swearinger and Cyprien will instantly improve the safety position for the Redskins this year.

A versatile offensive lineman who can play both Guard and Tackle. He had a very good Senior Bowl week and has the quickness needed to play in Shanahan's system.

A huge 6'5" 350lb NT that will be able to anchor the line and kick Barry Cofield out to DE. I think Cofield has played decently at NT, but Geathers could step in nicely.

A versatile running back with speed and pass catching ability. Also a possibility in the return game. He will be able to excel in the zone blocking system, but is not known for getting yards after contact. Could replace Roy Helu in the screen game if Helu continues to have trouble staying healthy.

Greetings Seahawks fans. I'm going to attempt to make a post to have a nice, civil discussion about the great playoff game that is coming up between our beloved teams. Please ask any questions you have about this team, this season, or Mike Shanahan's apparent addiction to tanning beds.

If you notice any animosity from any Hogs Haven members, it is probably due to the fact that the Redskins last two playoff appearances after the 2005 and 2007 seasons have been ended prematurely by your favorite squad. I know I personally went on a wonderful bender after the 2007 loss. So a little bit of playoff revenge is on everyone's minds this week.

I wasn't planning on doing a separate post, but I wanted to be cool like everyone else. We all put a lot of work into these mocks and we all love the draft. So let me know what you think, or tell me to piss off for posting another Recap.

Round 1 Robert Griffin III QB, Baylor – Round 1 was obvious and we picked the franchise QB.
Round 3 Brandon Boykin CB, Georgia – He was the best player available on both boards we were using and he is going to be an excellent corner at the next level. DeAngelo Hall might be on his last year with the Skins if his performance does not match his paycheck again.
Round 4 Jeff Allen OT/OG, Illinois – Offensive Line is 1B to the Secondary’s 1A on our needs list. Jeff Allen was drafted a lot higher than I expected and we were disappointed not have get him. When the Bears offered him up to anyone for Brewster, I offered our second 4th round pick, and amazingly this was accepted straight up. Major steal, extremely happy this trade was made.
Round 4 George Iloka SS, Boise St – With Allen secured we wanted to stick to BPA. I saw Iloka was not picked and he was the top player our list. If you have noticed the dumpster diving the Redskins have been doing at the safety position, you know a top safety like Iloka is still a big need. I feel he could beat out most of the current safeties on the roster, and is a solid addition and great value in the 4th round
Round 5 Jarius Wright WR, Arkansas – Speedy WR runs a 4.4 40, and can stretch the field. The receivers are another area that needs an upgrade. Garcon, Morgan, and Hankerson will all be weapons for RGIII.
Round 6 Nick Foles QB, Arizona – This was a pure value pick, and he was easily the BPA at the top of the 6th round. He will start as the 3rd QB, and will be developed to be a great backup QB. He has footwork issues which Kyle Shanahan will work on. Rex Grossman’s days are numbered if Foles works out as planned.
Round 6 Terrance Ganaway RB, Baylor – A familiar face for RGIII to hand the ball off to. This is a good value at this point in the draft, and Shanny gets his mandatory late round RB to develop. There are only 2 RB’s currently on the roster, and both had injuries near the end of the season, and Hightower has not been resigned.
Round 6 Nate Potter OT, Boise St – Another lineman that fits perfectly for the Redskins offense that was picked before we had a chance to draft him. The Raiders drafted him and put him on the trade block. We were able to grab him for 2 of our acquired 6th rounders in another really good trade.
Round 6 Chris Marve ILB, Vanderbilt – Marve is a project for London Fletcher to take under his wing and develop. My co-GM ENsDad27 is very high on his potential, and it is position of need.
Round 7 Tydreke Powell DT, North Carolina – Pure value pick here. He will go higher than this in the real draft. Will be a good player to develop in Haslett’s defense.

UDFA

Adam Gettis OG Iowa - He was on our radar starting in the 6th round, but we were hoping he would fall and then Tydreke Powell was available in the 7th. He could develop into a solid player, but will need time. Guard depth is needed badly.
Kevin Koger TE Michigan - Big TE who can catch, but needs to improve his blocking. Could come in and compete with Logan Paulsen for the 3rd TE spot. With Cooley's injuries and age, and Fred "Chong" Davis's off-field activities, it would be good tobring in a developmental TE.

Rokevius Watkins OG South Carolina Another guard for depth, and Watkins has also played RT. Basically going to be a camp body this year, and a practice squad candidate to develop.
Blair Walsh K Georgia I don't consider kicker to be a huge need, but Graham Gano can always use competition. He could also use a line that doesn't allow as many blocked attempts as last year. He has been rated the top kicker, but struggled this year.
Tony Dye SS UCLA Dye didn't play much last year with a lingering neck injury. This was my third replacement UDFA pick and it would be a camp invite to compete with our Longest Yard secondary.

Mocking the Draft War Room

Yesterday on Mocking the Draft, Rounds 1 and 2 of the 2012 NFL Draft were mocked live. I took the GM responsibilities, since the original GM wasn't available. I started trade talks with the Rams and Vikings to get a feel of what they expected for their picks.

The Rams wanted #1, 2, and 3 from this year, while the Vikings wanted 1 and 2 this year and next. I negotiated the Rams down to swapping 1st's this year, our 2nd rounder this year and a conditional 2nd/3rd next year if we make the playoffs. They didn't accept at first and ended up drafting Robert Griffin III.

When the Skins pick got closer they decided to accept the deal. I'm not a fan of trading up for RGIII, but this is a mock and the price was the lowest I've seen in any mock draft so far. Rounds 3-5 start today at 2:30EST. I should be there for the start, but I have a poker tourney to go to and might not be able to make all the picks. If anyone else from HogsHaven would like to step in, or discuss possible picks, have fun.
