As expected, Jay Simpson was granted a medical reshirt and retains 4 years of eligibilty. This is good news as I think Jay is going to make his mark on this program in the coming years. Coach Painter has has said on numerous occasions that Jay may be the most skilled player on the roster. His conditioning seems to be the one area in question but a full year of supervised training, weights and diet should help greatly.

This is the largest gap in commitments going back many years. I know some are of the opinion that this is a good thing. That CMP is allowing things to develop in these upcoming classes and not filling spots too early. To a certain extent, I agree. It is smart to hold a spot or two for late bloomers or positions that become more critical as the roster unfolds. But I also think there is a positive to having one of your top targets jump on board (eg. Bryson) and get the ball rolling. I'm sure I'm just a little antsy, but it is surprising that with the number of offers CMP has extended, that no one has pulled the trigger yet. It almost seems like Painter is controlling the timing of the commitments in 2014 (and beyond). Maybe the Willis fiasco has changed his approach? Remember about a year ago, Vince Edwards was rumored to be a imminent commitment. His Mom's twitter handle was FutureBoilerMom. That was hot and heavy and then squashed really quickly. Again, IMO, CMP put the brakes on there. This is a pretty risky approach because some of these recruits are gaining more and more attention, and there is a chance we could be shut out on this extremely critical 2014 class. For now, I'm going to trust in Painter's judgement and show some patience. But I'll admit, I'm getting nervous.

With all this recruiting activity recently, I decided to do a quick check on open offers for 2014. I reviewed ESPN, Scout and Rivals and consolidated all reported offers. Anybody want to take a guess how many are out there? Oh forget it! You suck at this game. The number is 16. 16 offers for 3 spots. Granted some of these may not be reported accurately and some are so pie in the sky, they are not realistic but they are still reported offers. I'll break it down by bigs and wings in order of likelyhood (IMO):

Bigs Wideman, Craig, Moore, M. Jones, White, Alexander

Wings Edwards, Diop, Bluiett, Barnett, Tate, Collier, Thompson,
Henderson, Lyle, T. Jackson

And I could swear I heard Paul Turner had an offer from us but I couldn't find anything to back it up. I don't know if these are all unconditional but, boy, that seems like a bunch. It's pretty clear, Coach Painter is not going to get caught short handed. I think we just need one to break the ice and the rest will follow.

Came down wrong on it in open gym and is out 4 to 6 weeks. I really hope this doesn't set him back and he is able to be 100% for the trip. Something like this can have a lasting affect. You get behind and it's tough to catch up. A lot of folks think he is our most likely red shirt candidate next year. I hope they are wrong but this won't help his cause. Am I at 75 words yet? Yeah, good. OK I'm done.

How do you feel about Painter leaving now? All the fans willing to let CMP go on the asumption that Zo would be our next coach can start working on Plan B. And you can stop dreaming about Stephens defecting also. If he moves, it will be to an elite program and for a lot more that Burke would offer. I hope this is all just rhetoric, buy anytime MB is involved. I get nervous.

Assuming no changes, in 2012 IU will have the following players who play essentially a wing position: Creek Sr., Olidapo Jr., Sheehey Jr., Etherington So., Patterson Fr. and Hollowell Fr. In 2013, subtract Creek and add Hartman and Davis. And that's not including Watford in 2012 whose natural position is the 3 (He'll probably transfer). That's 6 players for 2 positions in 2012 and 7 players for 2 positions in 2013. Barring injuries, none of these kids are redshirt candidates. In fact, given their rankings coming in, I'm sure each expects mucho PT right from the get go. You probably already guessed my point. There is no way everyone will be happy. I predict 2 to 4 of these players will either decommit or transfer at some point. I've got to give Crean credit. He convinced all of these kids that they would be THE star.

From an offer standpoint, Purdue is later than usual for a highly ranked local kid. This tells me that Harris is history and Painter is going in another direction. But the timing of the offer is curious. There's been no chatter about Hammons as a Purdue possibility. Does Matty know something or is he just taking a flyer? Maybe AJ has seen what the Purdue staff has been able to do for JJ. Just sayin'.
