Back to Basics...Secondary Edition
This will be my second post on our secondary, however in my last one I focused on Teddy Williams (now a WR) and Bryan McCann. This post I am going to try and follow ChiaCrack's posts on the O-Line and the D-Line. I will be looking at who we have and looking at who could replace them, if necessary.
Now as we all know, Dallas' CB's have been pretty pathetic this year. Newman and Jenkins have combined to give up 1600+yards, and were graded by ProFootballFocus.com as the 96th and 92nd respectfully CB's out of 99. Scandrick actually has been around midpack, grading out at the 44th spot (tips hat to OCC). So what does this tell us? Well considering how well both played last year my guess would be a combination of poor safety play (Ball) and nonexistent pass rush. The pass rush was already looked at by ChiaCrack in the DL post linked to above. so that leaves us with the safeties. I will be looking at the cornerbacks though considering that Newman is over 30 years old, and while Scandrick shows signs that he could replace him, that would still leave a void at the Third CB, the preferred place to "break in" a rookie CB.

Draft Math...or what can the Cowboys do to improve the team
Well, it seems that Dallas is going to end up with a fairly high draft pick in next year's draft. Seeing as there are only three games left in this season I feel pretty confident saying that Dallas will be picking at the 8 spot in next year's draft. Now this may change but I highly doubt it will change that much, considering that most sites that I have found that are updated recently, have had Dallas at the 8th pick for the last few weeks.
I will be laying out a few scenarios that are based upon this. Now the site that I use most is Walter football.com, mostly because they actually update their Mock Draft each Thursday. So the picks that I will be mentioning are based from there.... Also I will be using the Draft Value chart for any trades that are made. Now there are not any complete scouting reports but here is what I could find (name is linked). Well, enough explaining lets get to it:
For Entertainment Purposes Only.... An Opinion of the Dallas Cowboys...Aircraft style,BTB edition(edited with explanations)(new poll regarding the next installment...)
We here at BTB have had several shall I say "Insightful" Fanposts... taking just two of them Romodus Operandi and Lissyyy's post, have generated 954 (as of this posting) comments between the two. In these post there as been some hot and heavy discussions about the future of the Cowboys. Should Romo play, what about McGee, why Dallas seems to be able to run now that Wade has been fired, just to name a few.
Normally my posts are personnel focused and this one is no different. However I am going about this in a completely different way than usual. Using my extensive knowledge of aircraft, I will be stating what aircraft the Cowboys players most remind me of. Now I am not going through the entire 53... It will mostly be the starting 22, offense and defense, with a few select players thrown in.
My hope is to not only share my opinion of our favorite team, but hopefully make you chuckle, and inject some lightheartedness into the discussions, if you don't know the aircraft in question ask me, or even better, google it! You might learn something. So for your viewing pleasure my list:
Here is what Jerry is saying about Jason Garrett
Hope this works....
My Defensive Philosophy (beware this is a long Post)
First off I just want to let everyone know up front that this is an excercise. I am not advocating that Dallas do this. IF you agree with this fine, if you don't that is cool. To each their own as they say. However please refrain from insulting me personally if you don't agree. It is annoying, and shows a complete lack of class. Ok rant over. On to the task at hand.
It has been pointed out numerous times here on this site that the NFL is becoming Pass-Oriented. If you don't believe me just click here.(link) Now that you have read that,(you did read it right?), You know what I mean when I said that the league is becoming Pass-Oriented. With this in mind I want to share the Defense that I would run if I was the DC on the Cowboys.
Now I have done a similar post to this here. However I didn't really go into a lot of details about why I feel that this is a good defense, especially for Dallas. I will go into detail about it now. The thing that I want you to know before we get started is that this is completely radical in comparison to how things are done currently in the NFL. However, at one time the 3-4 was completely radical, as was Tom Landry's 4-3 Flex. Now I am not saying that my ideas are on that level, but as man once said, "Things Change". With this in mind I want to share the Defense that I would run if I was the DC on the Cowboys.
If I was the Boss in the War Room....
You know what happens when Jerry gets drunk? Good things. So I decided to try my hand at it... Unfortunately I am a light-weight when it comes to alcohol, and Jerry? Well he has at lot more practice. So no GM job for me. However before I got completely slobber-knockered, I was able to convince him to give me sole authority in the War Room. "How did I do that?" you ask. Well that is my secret... leave it at that.
Playoffs!!! You're talking about Playoffs!!
Yes, I want to talk playoffs. Most people here at BTB have pretty much given up the idea that the Cowboys can get to the playoffs, which considering their recent history and current record seems like a far-fetched idea. However I was looking over the records of our divisional rivals and winning the division could happen. How likely is it? Maybe not very, but even at 3-7 Dallas is NOT eliminated from the playoff picture. Dallas would need some help to get in and the way Philly is playing... well lets not dwell on that right now. However if Philly does drop a couple of games AND Dallas wins out... lets just say it's the NFL, anything could happen. But first lets take a look at the tie breaking procedures that the league uses to determine playoff seeding.

Cornerbacks?! We don't need to Draft no Stinking Cornerbacks!
Before the Cowboys went on this two game winning streak, a lot of people were saying that Dallas needed to draft a cornerback to replace Newman. Now I am not saying that is still not true, because Newman is on the wrong side of 30, Jenkins appears a lot less Revis-like, and Scandrick, while he has shown life, probably will stay our #3 CB for a while. However, I want to talk about two other guys that play CB for the Dallas Cowboys, Bryan McCann-o-Whoop-@$$ (thanks to Incredifan for the suggestion, I will be using it, but want to try and stay with in Guidelines) and Teddy Williams.
Now we all know the story of McCann by now. Small, fast guy who seemed to have a knack for the ball during preseason and TC. However Dallas cut him during the final cuts, trying to get him on the PS, but Baltimore grabbed him off waivers. However, he was released and placed on the Cowboys PS about two weeks later. He was activated to replace AOA as the primary kickoff returner, but injuries continued to mount for the 'Boys and McCann started against the Giants. The rest as they say is history.
Now a lot of people may or may not remember Teddy Williams. He was one of those guys that Dallas brought in during TC mostly as a project. He was a track star in college but had not played football since high school. However he got a few minutes in during Preseason, and played well. He managed to clear waivers, and is still on Dallas's PS. After the Jump I will be looking at both of them and comparing them to Dallas' current starting two, Newman and Jenkins.
Who Is Tradeable? Part II (The Jason Witten Debate)
In my last Fanpost one of the main discussions was "Witten shouldn't be Traded vs Witten needs to be Traded". Seeing as that has been a huge discussion for the past few weeks, I have decided to weigh in with both sides of the discussion. I am going to present the arguments for trading Witten, then present the argument against it. I will not present my opinion as that is not relevant. There will be a poll at the end so that we can see what the consensus is here at BTB.

Who is Trade-able? or Who can we use to Fix the Cowboys?
There are a lot of people here are saying trade this person for picks and so on and so forth. Well here are my opinions on who we trade and who we keep. I want to send out a thank you to G_SWAG for directing me to the contract information, without said info this post would not be possible. Now lets "JUMP" to it. (bad pun sorry)

An Interesting Idea I just Had... Plus some thoughts on 3-4 vs 4-3 defenses in regards to the Cowboys Roster
There are a few people here at Blogging The Boys that raise an intriguing point. Jay Ratliff seems to be getting Worn Down at the Nose Tackle spot. While I personally disagree with them, the point does have some Validity to it. Especially in the Giants Game it became clear the Jay Seems to have Lost the Ability to split the Double team like he used to. While this may be due to the Fact that Jay was up against two Players who knew what they were doing,(the Announcers made the point that the Giants had their Super Bowl winning O-line Back) it also is a Fact that Jay isn't your "prototypical" NT for the 3-4. so I have an Idea that may help with this Problem. More after the Jump...
The Defense I think we should run
Let me preface this by saying that I am not Advocating a complete change in defense philosophy. Dallas has a pretty good defense. Most of the Defensive problems are because A. lack of CONSISTENT pressure, B. weak secondary( I am looking at you Alan Ball). C. linebackers who are older and can't cover the better Tightends in the league.
Now this may seem to be more to overcome by simply changing the Play calling, and it is. There will be some roster changes. I am believe that we have the players on the roster to do this however and am going to plug them in as necessary. Now lets's Jump into it.
Would Denver Trade Carmelo Anthony To Dallas?
While this is an older post of mine Apparently there have been new developments on the Anthony Front. I really think that Dallas should seriously consider going after Carmelo. Now the Question becomes do you think Denver would trade Melo to Dallas? Or Will Denver try and trade him out of Conferance? Do you think We could Broker a deal with A team out of Conferance ,say the 76's for Andre Iglodala? if you want to weigh in please do so. I also gave a trade for Chris Paul but i edited that out due to the fact that it appears that Chris Paul isnt going any where.
About Tashard and the Wildcat
WE all know that Tash runs the "The Razorback" right? My qusetion is this... Has Mcgee done enough in the preseason to allow him to run the Razorback? Do you think that he could run it if he plays a few more games? why do we even care? if he can does that give us even more options? Or does it reduce them?
My feelings are this. McGee is looking really good this preseason. It honestly wouldnt surprise me if if jumped over Kitna this year. Will he, probably not, but still, even if he doesn't would it not be a good thing to allow him to get some true game time experience? Not to mention giving Romo a few plays off would be a very good thing considering Romo played on EVERY SNAP LAST YEAR!!! Wouldn't these formations be perfect for McGee who comes from a running based attack in college? Not to mention it would add the threat of a pass to the formation.
These are just my feelings about this one subject. Feel free to disagree with them if you wish. I don't get offended by constructive criticism.
What about Anthony?
While this is an older post of mine Apparently there have been new developments on the Anthony Front. I really think that Dallas should seriously consider going after Carmelo. Now the Question becomes do you think Denver would trade Melo to Dallas? Or Will Denver try and trade him out of Conferance? Chris Paul to Dallas..... the Scenarioes
In the past few days many people have chimed in on how Dallas should go after Chris Paul. Many have been good , some not so good. so i am going to take some take and break down a few scenarios by which we could get Paul and still work around the Salary cap. Each scenario assumes that we would have to take on the Okafor and Posey contracts to get Paul.
First scenario--- Hornets want just cap relief, cash and picks-----
We trade Butler Stevenson Terry and Berea Cash plus up to all three first round picks to hornets
this i feel is the best trade the mavericks could do as it does three things A. Roddy , DoJo and Mahinmi stay here in Dallas along with most of the trade assets that we have accured it would also help our depth except for posey who would probably be the 12th man
Second scenario---Hornets want Cap relief plus young stars, cash and picks---- this would require a little patience on the Mavericks part
To do it Now would require Two differant trades Trade One Chandler for Paul Straight up then Trade two Okafor and Posey for Roddy Butler and Stevenson or If the Hornets wait long enough then you can Package Chandler and Ancini in with Paul Okafor and Posey this is addition to up to All three !st rounders
While this this is Strictly a worse trade it would still be ok because we would be basically trading Roddy for Paul and Chandler for Okafor and the rest are just filler material. While this deal hurts the Depth Chart you still get CHRIS PAUL!!!!!
Third Scenario----We trade Kidd, Roddy, Butler,Chandler, cash and picks at the trade deadline for Paul Okafor and Posey. I really dont like this deal on so many levels first i dont like Deadline Deals to begin with and Second you are changing PG at mid season for the second time. we saw how that turned out.
The Nightmare Scenario---- The Spurs suddenly Swoop in and Steal Chris Paul Away with Tim duncan Ginobli, and Parker as trade Assets, reworkes Okafors deal and Proceed to beat us into the ground.......(shudders violently)
(well that is my nightmare at least)
If you feel that i have left out any Potential deals please feel free to let me know in the Comments
I also welcome any and all Consructive Critiques
My Thoughts
As a disclaimer....These are my opinions and due not necessarily reflect those of SBN and /or BTB. Any similarities are purely coincidental. Also I am kinda lazy so don't expect a bunch of stats. OCC I'm not.
To start with Jason Garret needs to be given a break. The man has guided us to three years of very good/great offensive gameplans. Now does he have some problems, yes, but name me any other third year coordinator who doesn't/didn't at that stage of their career.
Second of all Wade Phillips is our coach and will be for the foreseeable future. While I personally feel that we would be better of with a HC with a better Playoff Record, Jerry Jones apparently doesn't. Now don't get me wrong Love Wade The DC, I just feel that we need A counterpoint to his Laid back personality.
Last but not least, Roy Williams.. For all those who what to cut him now I have to disappoint you but it ain't going to happen. And not because of all the reasons you think but because of John Kitna. Now i know you are thinking what the heck does the back up Quaterback have to do with us Keeping Roy "Epic Fail" Williams? Think about it did we get both players from? Detroit. Kitna had a 4000 yard season with Williams and played with him for a couple of years so they already have chemistry with each other. So if Romo goes down (knock on wood) we have a receiver that Kitna has played with and had success with. Not many teams can say that.
Now that's off my chest... My projected 53 man roster.... those that I feel should start are listed First
Offense(28)
(3)QB--- Tony Romo, John KItna, Stephen McGee
(3)RB--- Tashard Choice, Felix Jones, Marion Barber
(6)WR--- Miles Austin, Roy Williams, Dez Bryant, Sam Hurd, Kevin Ogletree.
