Interview with Pat Washington - Anthony Randolph's High School Coach

Interview with Pat Washington - Anthony Randolph's High School Coach

I don't know about you guys, but all this talk about Amare vs Biedrins the past few days has me Amare-ed out. So here's something completely different, an interview with AR's HS coach.

(By Rasheed @ warriorsworld.net) Coach Washington talks about AR in high school, going into the NBA, his rookie season, and his future. He gave some great coaching advice to AR on dealing with Nellie's benching, and also losing in practice to Kurz.

Also, this section jumped out at me: "The rules of the game were simple, if you play, you can never stop running no matter what. If your ball is stolen then you have to run back and defend, if you stop or get tired, we sub you out no questions asked, if your not hustling on defense or if the other team scores they get the ball again." This made me think about how BWright indecisively stands around when rebounding while AR jumps out of the building to get a rebound. AR has it ingrained himself to never stop. I don't think BWright had that in him, so he got yanked.

With the 2009 Draft done, next on the menu is Summer League. Marcus Thompson lists the Warriors 5 games on his blog. Rosters will come out later. I'm rooting for Randolph, Morrow, and Davidson to be out there and "destroying people", as Randolph put it in his interview.

Also worth bookmarking, nba.com's 2009 Summer League page

Yet for all the electrifying blocks and thunderous dunks he's delivered this season, Randolph says he's most proud of something he didn't do this year: Go south after getting iced out by Nelson and the coaching staff.

"I could've handled it a lot of different ways, and it could've ended up way worse than it was." said Randolph, who cited communication as the biggest key to his turnaround.

"You tell me what to do, I'll do it, like you're seeing toward the end of the season. All I needed was somebody to tell me what I had to do, what not to do, or what to work up to."
=============
I think this has been mentioned by Bob and Jim on the broadcasts a few times. This was the first time Randolph had been "coached", having someone tell him how he should and should not play. And you have to give credit to Randolph for WANTING to be coached.
