Let's see...

The Rangers are in last place. The Mavs finished on the ass-end of the biggest upset in NBA playoff history. The Stars got bounced in the first round. The 'Boys hired Wade Phillips. Durant is leaving. "Disturbia" is the #1 movie at the box office.

any-...anyone got any good news?

12 k's in 8 innings, putting his K-BB ratio on the year at a much sturdier 24-8. He only allowed one walk and two hits, but both hits were solo homers(one courtesy of Hank Conger), so his ERA actually rises to 2.03. Oh well.

Johnny Whittleman also hit one out.

Is it too early to start the HPK(Hurley-Poveda-Kiker) hype?

J.D Drew?

"Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew opted out of the final three years of his contract Thursday, making him an unrestricted free agent."

Boras is his agent. He's a lefty power hitter and an outfielder, both needs for the Rangers. He's an injury risk, obviously, but when he plays, he's usually outstanding.

What might it cost to get him in Texas?

6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
90 pitches, 57 strikes

That brings his AAA numbers to:
18 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 17 K
2.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP

I can't help but think that John read Kevin Goldstein's article on how he wasn't going to be as good as everyone thought, because since his numbers from May 5th on have been pretty incredible.

3-5 tonight with his 10th homerun and 12th double. He's now hitting .324/.373/.634 on the year. He's crushing righties to the tune of .323/.389/.667, but unless Nevin completely falls apart I don't see Buck arranging a Nevin/Botts lefty-righty platoon.

Botts has not been walking quite as much(probably because he's hitting the ball so well), but his strikeout rate is still slightly high, which will probably not put to rest the concerns about him having a long swing. Regardless, the Rangers absolutely have to find a way to get Jason into the lineup, because he doesn't have much left to prove in the minors and he's not exactly "young" at two months shy of his 26th birthday.

Dontrelle Willis:
"The Marlins haven't made Dontrelle Willis available in trades, but that could change, the Miami Herald reports.

According to published reports, contenders with deep farm systems stand the best chance of acquiring Willis. The Red Sox, Braves, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Angels, Blue Jays and Mets all are expected to be interested.

Willis, who will command top dollar as a free agent after the 2008 season, is ignoring all the speculation. 'I hear those rumors just like you do, but I just try to focus on what I need to do on the field,' the left-hander recently told the Chicago Tribune."

Roger Clemens:
"According to USA Today, the four teams Roger Clemens is considering -- the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers -- are willing to pay 'the going rate' -- at least a $20 million salary, which will be prorated on what portion of the season Clemens is with the team. 'That gets you in the game,' agent Randy Hendricks told the newspaper.

Whether Clemens will be in any games will be determined by the next several weeks of workouts at his Houston home. "This three-week period is the litmus test," Hendricks said. "He's testing his body. He's working out once or twice a day and now he has accelerated his workouts to what he did when he played."

Hendricks estimated Clemens would make a decision about playing and for whom by about June 5, which would mean he would be ready to pitch in games around July 1."

Kerry Wood(not directly tied to the Rangers, but interesting nonetheless):
"Kerry Wood could be be dealt by the trading deadline if the Cubs can't get back in the pennant race, the Daily Herald reports. As is stands now, it's unlikely the Cubs will pick up his $13.5 million option for 2007, instead buying him out for $3 million.

But before that happens, the Cubs might try to re-sign Wood to a multiyear deal for a lot less. If they can't and are out of the chase, the Cubs would have to consider moving him.

The 28-year-old doesn't plan to weigh his contract situation until the season ends. 'I'll go out every fifth day and concentrate on what I've got to do to give this team a chance to win, and when the season's over we can look back on it all and make that decision,' Wood told the newspaper. 'I absolutely would love to stay here.'"

Hurley was having a fine season so far, but tonight he just exploded:

8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 15 K

Which makes his season line:

43.2 IP, 32 H, 8 BB, 44 K, 2.06 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 5.5 K/BB

Keep in mind, the Cal League is a hitters league, an even when Danks and Diamond were dominating Cal hitters last year, their numbers were as impressive all-around as Hurley's are right now.
