Icers Recap: A Couple of Rare Treats For the Home Crowd

The fans of Penn State ice hockey were in for a couple of enjoyable rarities at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion this weekend. First, the rare occurrence of a NCAA-D3 team playing an away exhibition game...

Icers Recap: Another Round With Ohio and URI

Within my first few weeks of being a Penn State student, I learned two things that completely shaped and altered my college experience (for the better). First, Penn State has an ice hockey team;...

Icers Announce Roster for Final ACHA Season

The start of college football season means that college ice hockey season is not far behind. With the Blue-White game slated for September 30th, the Icers announced today the roster for the Icers'...

Discussion of the Traffic Logistics Surrounding Pegula Ice Arena

Short story from the CDT discussing some of the traffic logistics that may need to be resolved as part of the planning/building process of the Pegula Ice Arena. Issues discussed included the need for additional turn lanes, and the loss of 227 staff/faculty parking spaces. Further discussion was tabled until August, when the finalized study should be ready.

Bill Downey returns to Penn State Ice Hockey

Bill Downey will be coming to Penn State for a third time in his life, as he was named the new Director of Hockey Operations. After a very successful playing career with the Icers, Downey bounced around some scouting and assistant coaching jobs before returning to Penn State as an assistant coach from 2008-2010. This past year, Downey worked as the Director of Hockey Operations for Harvard. A great asset to Penn State hockey, and a great guy all-around. Welcome back (again), Billy Downey!

Icers Name Brandwene New Women's Ice Hockey Coach

In a rather abrupt announcement, the Penn State Women's Ice Hockey team has named Josh Brandwene as the new head coach. No word yet on if current coach Mo Stroemel will step down, or if this hire will be for the start of NCAA play in 2012-13. (Update: Steve Penstone is reporting on his Twitter that Mo will have a role with the women's varsity team.) Brandwene is no stranger to Penn State. From 1987-91, he was a defenseman for the Penn State Icers, during which time he was named captain, helped win an ACHA Championship, and finish with 141 career points, which sits him 5th all-time for Icer defensemen. Since his graduation, he has coached three High School/Prep School teams, three ACHA men's teams (WVU, Delaware, and Michigan-Dearborn), held the position of ACHA president from 1997-2004, and been elected to 3 Hall of Fames (Penn State Icers, Delaware Ice Hockey, and ACHA). He easily has the qualifications and Penn State background to fit into the position perfectly. Welcome (back), Josh Brandwene!

Icers Update: Memorial Weekend Edition

You will have to excuse my lack of updates and haphazard nature of this update in particular. Between the basketball coaching news, and the fact that I'm not used to having to write about the Icers...

Icers Update: New Coach, New Recruits, and Final ACHA Schedule

After an onslaught of rumors and media games from the athletic department, the Penn State Nittany Lions officially announced yesterday the new head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions NCAA DI...

Penn State Names Guy Gadowsky as Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach

Big news out of the ice hockey world today, as Princeton's Guy Gadowsky has been named the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions hockey team starting in 2012-13. It's a great, great signing for Penn State, as Gadowsky will go a long way in helping the team make huge steps early on. Guy Gadowsky - welcome to Penn State!

Penn State Men's Gymnastics Goes for Lucky Number Thirteen

It's Championship Week in the college gymnastics world (and somehow it all centers in Ohio). The women are heading to Cleveland for the weekend championships, while the men are in Columbus for...

Time To Step Up: Derek Moye

Graduation and injuries are constantly shaking the college football landscape. Thanks to some quality recruiting in recent years, the depth at wide receiver for the Nittany Lions can withstand most...

Know Your Nittany Lions: Women's Gymnastics, Part 2

Last time, I discussed the sport a bit and the major role players on the Penn State team. This round, I'll finish off the remaining team members and provide some insight as to what you can expect...

Know Your Nittany Lions: Women's Gymnastics, Part 1

Easy bump-Fooge With the NCAA regional meets coming up this weekend for the womens' gymnastics teams, I figured I would try to use my current hockey downtime to help enlighten the BSD readership...

Women's Gymnastics Heading to Bama for NCAA Regionals

While I haven't seen anything "officially released" from the NCAA yet, I'm fairly certain that this is correct. The ladies will be heading to Alabama as the #2 seed in the regional, looking to clinch a spot at NCAA Championships. This is the second trip this season to Alabama for the Nittany Lions, as the ladies started their season with a meet against the Crimson Tide. Alabama will likely win the regional, as they are the #2 team in the nation and will have the obvious advantage of being the home team. Penn State will need to hold off Illinois for second place and the qualifying spot for the NCAA's. Penn State finished ahead of the Illini this past weekend at the Big Ten Championships and will look to do the same at Alabama on April 2nd.

Big Ten Hockey Conference to be Recommended for 2013-14

After much discussion and deliberation, the Big Ten athletic directors announced on Monday that they will recommend to the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors that men's ice hockey be an...

Nice story on Sharaya Musser's battle through health issues

1 did a great story on Sharaya Musser. It discusses some of the health issues she had to deal with in her past (some that still affect her today) and how she has since become one of the top female gymnasts in college today. She's helping lead Penn State to some of their best team performances and she's just a sophomore to boot.

Icers Recap: Falling Short

The opening rounds of the ACHA National Tournament lived up to the expectations - the top 3 seeds all destroyed their (undeserving) autobid opponents; the 4th seed struggled with their autobid...

ACHA National Tournament Open Thread

In case you need something to follow during the breaks in the wrestling Big Ten's, the ACHA National Tournament starts today. And as I have nothing else to do, I'll be following most/all of the...

Women's Gymnastics Scores Big on Senior Night

Kudos to our lady gymnasts, as they continued their season-long improvement and scored an amazing 197.075 on senior night. For those not in the know, that is a really outstanding team score (max score would be 200.00) that is on par with most of the top teams in the nation. After losing girls like Brandi Personett, Casey Rohrbaugh, and (personal favorite) Rosie Smith, I figured at least a small step backwards before hitting their stride next season. But this team is scoring better than last year and will easily be fighting for a spot at Nationals. Also, thanks to seniors Danielle Hover and Heather McElwee for their great careers at Penn State, and best wishes for continued success after they graduate.

Icers Recap: Senior Weekend and Nationals Planning

Another year, another solid class of Icer seniors prepare for their final games in Blue and White. While there were no championships for this group, a fair number of great accomplishments and...

Icers Recap: The Start of Tournament Season

The final rankings were released early in the week, and as was anticipated, the Icers not only made the tournament, but also made the jump to #10 in the rankings. A shake-up in the rankings means...

Icers Headed to ACHA National Tournament

The final rankings were announced this evening, with the Icers moving up to #10. Based on this tweet (which might be the best/only way to get news out of the ACHA), the Icers would face Rhode Island in the first round. I'll discuss what this means in my next recap post on Monday. Also interesting - Oakland fell only to #11, and RMU(IL) jumped Iowa State for the final spot. This is the first ACHA National Tournament that Al Murdoch and ISU have missed since the league's beginning.

Icers Recap: Sloppy Play and Scoreboard Watching

With the major tests behind them, the Icers just needed to take care of business against the Robert Morris Colonials in the final weekend of the (meaningful) regular season. A couple of wins and...

Icers Recap: Alumni Unite!

Although the ACHA National Tournament is still a month away, it was a playoff atmosphere that filled the Ice Pavilion for a weekend set against #6 Rhode Island. A split with the Rams would go a...

Icers Recap: Chirping and Tweeting with the Blue Hens

Technology today makes for some interesting trash talking. In years past, trash talking in the ACHA was only done through the college papers, and that was horribly inefficient. It would take days...

Icers Recap: A Weekend of New Names

The weekend of new names started early on Friday for the Icers. At the Board of Trustees meeting, it was announced that the new ice rink being built on campus will be named the Pegula Ice Arena -...

Welcome to the Pegula Ice Arena

And so it is - the official name of the new ice arena. It's straight forward and not overly wordy, which is nice. Sure, something like the "Pegula Ice Pavilion" or "Pegula Ice Palace" have a fun ring to them, but this is just as solid. Also, with the plans currently at having two sheets of ice, I'm assuming they'll eventually name each rink (this is common practice for any arena with more than one sheet of ice). So it's time to start the speculation on that. I've got the Battista and Dufford rinks right now. (Again, thanks to @TYTBlog for doing a write-up for me.)

Icers Recap: Under Pressure

For the Penn State Icers, 2011 is filled with difficult tasks, each weekend filled with pressure. After opening with a set of games at rival Ohio, the Icers deal with nothing but league opponents...

Icers help Team USA win in exhibition

With the World University Games just around the corner, the ice hockey team is getting together to get some extra practice in during the Winter Break. Icers Tim O'Brien and Eric Steinour both scored in the first period to help Team USA to a 5-4 OT win over NCAA D3 Castleton State. Team USA lead 4-0 at one point, only to slack off and squeak out the OT win (sounds just like the Icers). The WUG start up January 28th for the men, and the 27th for the women. (h/t to TYTBlog for doing this write-up for me)
