Icers Recap - The Season in a Weekend

Two games on back to back nights say it all. One game was what should be; the next day was the reality. It actually makes me long for the days (read: last season) when the team would play all the...

Is UT the best fit for the Big Ten?

It'd be a groundbreaking addition, to say the least...

Tentatively Scheduled: Icers to play Wisconsin in inaugural NCAA season

The author mostly discusses the advent of the Big Ten Hockey Conference, but does slip in the note that Penn State and Wisconsin have a tentative agreement to play a set of games at the Kohl Center in 2012-13. (h/t @TYTBlog)

Icers Recap: More Questions, Fewer Answers

As the Icers' season rolls through mid-November, there have been a number of new things I have never previously experienced with this program. This season marks the first time that the goalie...

Icers Recap: All Aboard the Goaltending Carousel

Over the past couple of weeks, the football team has cycled through their QBs - sometimes due to injury, sometimes due to effectiveness or lack thereof. For the Icers, injuries haven't been an...

Thursday Night Open Thread

It's Thursday, which means it's football Saturday for one of the two "lesser" BCS conferences. Tonight, that honor belongs to the ACC, as #13 Florida State heads to Raleigh, NC to face the #31 NC...

Icers Recap: It Gets a Little Tougher

While the football team was off and not losing to anyone getting healthy, it was revenge weekend for the Icers, as the Central Oklahoma Bronchos (yes, it's with the 'h' and no, I don't know why)...

Icers Open the 2010-11 Season

After a month of speculation and celebration over the announcement of Varsity ice hockey at Penn State, it was finally time to actually put the sticks on the ice and start playing the good old...

Last Minute Icers Info and Live Webcast Site

Tonight, the Icers open their second-to-last season in the ACHA with a weekend set on the road at Pitt. For those in the Pitt area looking for something to do tonight/tomorrow, the games are at the Harmarville Blade Runners Ice Complex. Game tonight is at 8:50pm, and the game tomorrow is at 4pm. For anyone interested in following the games from the comfort of their own home, the games are being broadcast this season via UStream.

Varsity Hockey at Penn State: Is This Real Life?

The announcement last Friday may have felt like a dream. For many people closely connected to the program, it has been a dream in the making. In an interview with Steve Penstone, Joe Battista...

ACHA announces 2011 National Team for World University Games

Back in June, I made note of the Icers I thought would have the best chances of making this team. I'm not sure which players did and did not try out, but Tim O'Brien and Eric Steinour have been named as starters to the team. The Icers have two alternates as well, defensemen Kevin Miller and Dan Petrick. Congrats to the two who made it and the two who might still find their way to Turkey next January.

NCAA DI hockey on the horizon?

Being in Milwaukee means I'm far removed from getting regular info or updates on these sorts of things, so I can't make a call on the validity of the report. However, it is in line with some of the old rumblings I used to hear about, so there is likely a lot of truth to the rumblings going on. Whether it all comes to fruition or not is another story, but this is worthy of getting excited over the chances of getting a new hockey arena and D1 hockey in Happy Valley.

Icers announce new assistant coach

Keeping with the new coaches theme, the Icers announced their new assistant head coach, Josh Hand. Hand has been involved in hockey for the past 15 years, including playing youth hockey in Reading and Junior hockey in Philadelphia. Most recently, he was the director of hockey at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station, TX, while serving as an instructor and assistant coach at Texas A&M. Hand replaces Bill Downey, who was the assistant coach for two seasons before moving on to other career opportunities.

Penn State announces new Women's Gymnastics head coach

About a month ago, Steve Sheppard stepped down as the head coach after 18 years with Penn State. It was a shame to see him go, as he is great coach and a great man in general. Still, life moves on, and Penn State has announced Jeff Thompson as the new head coach. Thompson was the head coach at Auburn, finding success in one of the toughest conferences in women's gymnastics. His wife, Rachelle, will join him as the assistant head coach.

Here's the line-up prior to the Union v. Chicago Fire game. Union are on the left, and if you look closely enough, you'll notice they're in Orange jerseys - yup, they're in Flyers jerseys. Nice to see the newest team in town is supporting their fellow Philly teams. (h/t @Union2010)

Icers Update - Summer Edition

In a change of pace from last year, I've decided to increase my summer workouts to keep up with my Icers writing abilities. My workouts also include a lot of beer drinking, but hey, when in Rome...

Icers Release Preliminary Schedule for 2010-11 Season

Last week, the Icers released a preliminary schedule for next season. Here's the schedule:                   Preliminary 2010-2011 Schedule October 2010 Fri 1 at Pitt Sat 2 at Pitt F...

Icers Do Some Earlier-Than-Expected Planning for Next Season

Because it's moping week here at BSD...   After a week to recoup (and a few days to find the time to write), I've finally gotten around to writing the final recap for the Icers. It was a solid...

ACHA Tournament Open Thread (part 1 of a sad 1)

First... There is, in fact, a tournament access pass at the much more reasonable price of $20 for the entire tournament. You have to go through the ACHA-specific site for Fasthockey. Use h...

Icers Look to Build Momentum for the Tourney

The final weekend for the Icers means a few things. First, play hard (but not stupid) to maintain momentum heading into the tournament. Second, a few line-up changes would be in order to give some...

Icers Fulfill Goal Number Two

Every season now, the Icers head in with three goals. First, win the ESCHL Regular Season Title; second, win the ESCHL Post-Season Title; and third, win the ACHA National Championship. For the past...

Final ACHA Standings released

The final rankings were released today (instead of Friday) to determine the teams and rankings for the ACHA National Tournament. Apparently Slippery Rock doesn't get an autobid, so the top 12 in the rankings move on to the tournament. Minot State, Oakland, and Central Oklahoma make it in; Arizona State somehow stays alive; and Kent State jumped Adrian and URI to take the final spot. The Icers are ranked #2 and will face SUNY Canton in the first round - that game will be played on 3/6 at 1pm in Bensonville, IL. But I'll post more of that info later.

Icers Go For a 3rd Straight ESCHL Regular Season Title

Looking to wrap up the ESCHL regular season title, the Icers headed down to Philadelphia to take on a weak Drexel team. They'd have to complete the weekend without #2 scorer Dominic Morrone, who is...

An update on the Penn State hockey team and their quest for the ESCHL title.

Icers Try to Keep on Streaking

When we last left the Blue Hens, you might remember a 6-0 blowout win for the Icers that included the Delaware goaltender being tossed for trying to fight with Teddy Hume. Good times, good times....

Icers and the ESCHL, Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

Yes, I'm making an executive decision* and moving these to once a week during the spring semester. I figure this will give me a chance to post some deeper info about the team, and overall, less...

Penn State - beating Iowa one non-major sport at a time

The women's gymnastics team won their first meet of the year, easily beating Iowa, Yale, and Cornell in their first home meet of the year. This win will go with their two 2nd place finishes thus far - falling short to Michigan State and Denver, both at those respective sites. As an unofficial gymnastics correspondent, it looks like this could be a solid year for both gymnastics teams. The men's team just continues to reload, and the women's team is lead by a very talented group of seniors. Something else to look forward to during the spring.

Icers Start the Second Half

With the holidays in the rear-view mirror, the Icers were prepared to take on the second half of the season of hockey. The Icers would open with a couple games before classes began - one at...
