Clippers Re-Sign Brian Skinner
So that makes 14 going into the season, just as we suspected.
Hat tip to Citizen FATAL for posting this. I'm going to jump in with some thoughts here on the front page.
This is clearly in keeping with MDsr's recent history, as I mentioned in Monday's post. He likes having a veteran big on the bench, and Brian Skinner is the new Aaron Williams - so slot Skinner in as the 14th guy. Skinner's not a bad guy to have around, though one hopes that he's not getting many minutes, especially if those minutes are coming at the expense of DeAndre Jordan. Still, one suspects that CMDsr is going to prefer the security of Skinner's experience playing post defense against certain opponents - call him the 'big blanket.' It's also interesting to compare Skinner to Mark Madsen in that 14th spot - it's clear that Skinner is the better baller, and given that he appears to be a great teammate as well, this seems like an upgrade over Mad Dog.
According to Eric Pincus' post on the signing, it is a guaranteed contract, so indeed this would appear to be the roster with which the Clippers will begin the season. They could sign someone to the 15th spot, but GMMDsr has always preferred to leave it open in order to have some flexibility during the season. In other words, if you sign another point guard now, you may wish you had signed a small forward if all your small forwards get hurt at once. By leaving a spot open, they can react to injuries and other situations (like trade opportunities) more quickly during the season. By the way, Pincus points out that the Clippers saved some money, since the league picks up a portion of one year minimum deals but not for multi-year deals - fun CBA fact.
This also fits into the continuity theme we've been hearing from the Clippers. Obviously they added Griffin, the future (and arguably present) face of the franchise and the bench was bolstered with Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith and Rasual Butler as the primary backup (or better) at four spots on the floor. So in the end, it's a pretty good mix of stability and added talent - 10 out of 14 players are returning from last season, but the four new bodies figure heavily into a nine man rotation. Steve
Knicks still in Sessions
Interesting article, but still much of the same old same old. Ugh
Steve's Note: Thanks for posting this, citizen. A point I wanted to emphasize in last night's post but didn't make explicit enough is that I still believe the Knicks are in the driver's seat on Sessions. Hahn's point seems well taken - if the Clippers are really interested, why haven't they made an offer? It's possible of course that they have - and that Sessions and his agent are still hoping for a better offer from the Knicks. At any rate, it's a staring contest at this point, though honestly it's Sessions who has the most to lose. Neither the Knicks nor the Clippers seem like they're going to blink.
