Justin Smiley On The Trade Block
What would we be willing to give up to obtain the injury prone Smiley? Would Smiley be willing to come back to the SF?
I'm not sure if the Niners and Smiley left off on good terms, but i would like to see Smiley in the red and gold again (for the right price of course.)
Vernon vs. Joey (Among Other Things)
Since the Cardinals have signed the always outspoken Joey Porter, and seeing as how there was a bit of talk about this match-up in 2008. I can't wait to see this twice a year, purely for entertainment purposes. I say for "entertainment," because i just want to see a bit of smack talk between the two, you know, "you're the best at being ugly," that kind of talk. Although i think a bit more [site decorum's] may have been used. The only time the two met, Davis handled Porter, although he had help at times from Joe, but in a 1 on 1 he took Porter out of the play, as he so often does with many of the people he blocks.
The only thing that worries me about this Porter signing is if he were to return to his elite self, even though we did keep him in check for the most part in 2008, during which he led the league in sacks. He will actually have a better pass rushing supporting cast in AZ with the likes of Hayes, Campbell, Dockett, A-Dub, and Rhodes. All of whom are known to be fairly adequate at rushing the passer. What may be even more terrifying is that Dockett, and Porter will be playing on the right side, where we will more than likely have to double team 1 or the other. All this added to the fact that if we don't obtain a servicable LG (one greater than Baas) we might be in serious trouble. This of course is all hypothetical in that Joey were to revert to his old self, but with his age steadily catching up to him, and the unlikely scenario of us not obtaining a greater LG than Baas, this all seems rather fairy tale for the Cards, and disastrous for us. So for the time being I'm not to worried about it.
I hope that we have a MNF game against Arizona again this year, because its almost a guarantee there will be a segment on the match-up in the pregame show. We may not see too much of Vernon vs. Porter during the game though, with Vernon being utilized much more as a receiving threat now under Raye's system, than he was in Martz. This added to us obtaining Tony Curtis, who is mainly a blocking TE, and who will more than likely be assigned to handle Porter if we have two TEs on the field. Vernon vs. Porter may only be a match-up we will see once in a blue moon, or via debate (over who is truly the ugliest of them all). Nonetheless it should be a entertaining to watch the two bicker.
