If the Season Ended Yesterday: Yankees Over Phillies

4

Our first postseason simulation of the year shows that, if the season ended yesterday, the Yanks would top the Phils in the Fall Classic.

Examining the Deliberate Pace of the Yanks and Red Sox

26

We know that baseball games are longer when there's more scoring, the run differential is close and the game matters. That would explain why the Yanks and Sox are so slow, right? Not exactly...

Dave Cameron is on the mend. "The results of that test are in – I officially have no more leukemia in my body. The doctors won’t say I’m in remission until they discharge me from the hospital in a week or two, but given that I’m currently cancer-free, I’m happy to use that term, even if it is technically a little premature."

Former Yankee, Lotte Orion Hideki Irabu Found Dead, Suicide Suspected

+
This is just breaking and, at present, we only have links to stories in Japanese, but apparently former Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead at his California home yesterday. Suicide by hanging is suspected. (Craig Calcaterra, Hardball Talk) After a long and successful career with the Lotte Orions (now Chiba Lotte Marines) of the NBP Pacific League, Irabu made his MLB debut with the Yankees before moving on to the Expos and Rangers. He won two World Series rings with New York while posting 3.1 rWAR. In Japan, Irabu was one of the most dominant strikeout pitchers of his day. He was 42.

MLB Games Under 3:00, Yanks & BoSox Take Sweet Time

The Yanks and Red Sox are still the slowest teams in baseball, and the typical MLB game is still under three hours.

Cluelessness and Sexism is Alive and Well in Sports

26

It's ridiculous how a multi-billion USD industry tends to ignore a sizable portion of the market. It's even more ridiculous how such a dominant aspect of American life tends to dismiss an entire gender. "As a female sports fan I would like to believe that in 2011 sports teams, leagues and companies recognize they have a very large female following and they would do their best to market not only to men, but to the knowledgeable female base as well. Within the past few months I have been led to believe the opposite."

Billy Heywood: The Silver Screen's First SABR Manager?

2

The movie I have selected is the 1994 classic, Little Big League. The story revolves around an 11 year old boy who lives, eats and breathes baseball... As you can see young Billy Heywood takes on baseball's conventional wisdom and successfully explains why bunting can be a bad idea. Is it possible this movie, that came out several years before Moneyball took hold in Oakland, was ahead of its time?

How to Speak Sabermetrics to a Mainstream Audience

"But how do we present these new tools in a way that keeps mainstream fans from tuning out? How do you talk to your friends about sabermetrics without confusing them and looking like a nerd? It’s a tough balance to maintain, but I’ve found there are five guidelines that work well for me when talking with friends and writing articles."

Visualizing Declining Standards for Retired Uniforms

It used to be that teams only retired the uniforms of elite players. Today? Not so much.

Volunteers bat cleanup at the old Tiger Stadium baseball field

+

"Overgrown weeds clung to the fence, and candy bar wrappers, broken liquor bottles, discarded chip bags and empty cigarette packs littered the ground Sunday morning at the site of the old Tiger Stadium in Detroit. By afternoon, volunteers had filled several dozen garbage bags with trash and yard waste and installed bases donated by Madonna University, and a pickup baseball game was under way. Those who wanted to play threw a glove into a pile, which was quickly separated into two piles, and the teams were set."

If it feels like teams are retiring numbers and uniforms more than they used to, that's because they are.

There’s Mariano . . . and everyone else "Major league teams often struggle to find and keep a reliable closer for more than a handful of seasons. The Yankees’ Mariano Rivera, however, has proven exceptionally reliable and durable, holding the role a record 14 consecutive years with the same team. A look at the number of closers - defined as the saves leader for the season - used during the span by other clubs, highlighting players who closed at least two years in a row."

MLB Basic Agreement Generates Profit for All

Yes, it's significant that profits have stabilized at 9% league-wide. What's even more significant is that the profit is widely distributed. As profits spiked, so did the number of profitable teams.
