Michael Morse scheduled to have wrist surgery

4

Doctors say the injury growth likely began in May and may have affected his swing, causing him to not hit as well as normal. Morse had been hitting .254/.321/.468 with 11 home runs through May. From June onward, he hit just .165/.204/.273 with two home runs.

Because I know somebody -- maybe even someone outside Port Orchard -- will want to see this. Here's the explanation, but I really think this picture stands on its own. Note: I don't think that dominatrix girdle thing is standard Fighting Irish gear, so maybe he brought that from home?

Police report from Jays-M's game back in May

So apparently a guy crashed the field at Rogers Centre back when the M's played there in May. The Toronto Police seem rather sympathetic.

Raul The Kid

So I stumbled across this image of Raul in the Mariners dug-out the day before he made his major league debut. He's wearing a Rainiers uni for the same reason Griffey is: it's a "Turn Back the Clock" night -- July 31, 1996. He would make his debut (as a pinch hitter) the next day, August 1. (Source)

Examining Smoak and Franklin's July 7 Home Runs

In a response to Ellis' "39-49" summary post for the July 7th game, commenter paulcl asks a good question: were the pitches that Franklin and Smoak hit actually mistakes, or were they good pitches...

Mariners #1 in Draft Power Rankings

2

Sure, not the Draft Power Ranking you probably thought of (and certainly not the one you care about) but... really, this is just a link to an amusing and enjoyable story. In which the Mariners are ranked #1! (Yes, this is a couple of years old. And yes, this is what it has come to).

Latest "Vote for Mune" Effort

1

The "Fans United to Yell Kawaski SuperPAC" associated with Blue Bird Banter have been producing videos in an attempt to get folks to vote Mune into the AllStar Game. The latest is much better than the first, and is targetted specifically at Washington Nationals Fans. Also, SI has picked up on the Mune Mania (with fresh GIFs!)

Sickels ranks M's farm system 2nd in MLB

Behind the Cardinals. Rangers at #4, A's and Angels down at the bottom, and the Astros at #11 (but with most of their strength far from the majors).

Not that we needed any, but perennial finalist for Baseball's Biggest Douchebag appears to be joining them for 2013.

I wouldn’t say the Seattle Mariners organization is the deepest system in the majors but it has some of the best upper-tier talent among the 30 baseball clubs. What’s even more impressive with the organization is that so many of those top prospects are pitchers and up-the-middle position players. Also, unlike a lot of the top systems in the game, the bulk of Seattle’s talent is at the double-A and triple-A level suggesting better days are ahead for the Mariners and their fans.

Baseball to open 2014 Season in Australia?

6

Or so says the Sydney Morning Herald. That report may have jumped the gun a little, because while MLB acknowledges there have been talks, nothing has been decided. The promoters in Aus seem to be very enthusiastic to get the Dodgers, with the Diamondbacks as a possible opponent. And they're suggesting one of the games would be played during the day on a Sunday in Australia, making it available in primetime Saturday night in the US. Because, you know, MLB can't expect fans of teams that matter to get up in the early morning hours. But you know, I'm not sure the Dodgers are the right choice, or that the Diamondbacks should be the competition. After all, the Oakland A's already wear the Australian National Team colors (plus, it gives them another wacky start to the season, and look how that worked out for them this year.). Or how about the White Sox, who played an exhibition game in Australia in 1914, making this the centenary? And either one of those teams could still play the Dodgers, since we're going to have an interleague game every day of the schedule now.

And why he doesn't like it being touched. It's a subject that has always demanded delving into, and after years of wonder, endless gifs, and suspicious (cowardly?) silence on the part of "name" baseball journalists, SB Nation's Amy K. Nelson finally does it. I realize Matthew has a post on the front page right now titled "Important Baseball Knowledge." But with all due respect, this is Important Baseball Knowledge.

Mike Cameron to be Mariners' Draft Representative

Every team sends a couple of guys to carry the banner, and this year (June 4th) one of the Mariners' reps will be Mike Cameron. Other former M's or Mariners-related people in attendance on behalf of other clubs: Ryan Franklin (Cardinals), Mike Hargrove (Indians), and (of course) Pat Gillick (Phillies).
