Buffalo Rumblings The Bills Not-Need Needs

There are 3 positions that the Bills probably won't look to upgrade this off season but really should, one way or the other. They are positions that are typically referred to as o.k. or "set" by management and the fan base alike but I still feel adequate upgrades should be looked at.

There are more pressing needs on the roster than these positions but if an upgrade were available I think the Bills should make a move on these positions with equal footing as other positions.

Buffalo Rumblings Bills Poised To Have A Good 2012 Season

The salary cap was created in order to create parity in the NFL - which it has. What hasn't changed since the salary cap is how many coaches get fired. Every year it seems like a third of the league gets a new coaching staff.

Luckily for the Bills they get to face 5 teams with brand new coaches next year.

Buffalo Rumblings Pass Wacky Bills To Continue Pass Wacky Ways

I was reading BuffaloBills.com and a new article that Chris Brown wrote called "Bills 1st half figures reveal identity". I figured it'd had some good information in it (which it certainly does) about what the Bills tried to do as opposed to what they were forced to do because of a sieve like defense or game circumstances.

Popular theory around here is that we threw the ball more because we were down in games and needed to in order to catch up. Also that our defense was the reason that we had to pass more because we were consistently behind and trying to catch up.

Well after reading that article I, as well I assume everyone else, now know the Bills true identity (sucking?) which is (and clearly has always been in the Chan era) a passing attack.

Buffalo Rumblings A Couple Of Things J2 Looks For In A QB

There is really no hard and fast rule on things you look for when drafting or looking for a QB. However, there are things that I look for that would sway me one way or the other in selecting a QB for my franchise (i'm going to buy the Bills - you can donate at www.j2isnevergoingtoownthebills.com).

Buffalo Rumblings A Few Positives During This Slide?

I had some random thoughts, being the optimist that I am, about our current slide and how going forward the Bills could be better off. As agonizing as this debacle of a season is to watch there are at least a few things, I think, that are positives going into next year. Mainly because of this 7 soon to be 9 game slide.

As the 2011 season winds down for the Bills the media is already begin to focus more attention on the 2012 NFL draft. Head coach Chan Gailey had a pretty pointed response when asked if the team would consider drafting a quarterback in the first round.
"You can talk to (Bills GM) Buddy (Nix) about that kind of stuff," said Gailey. "But I don’t believe that’s anywhere in the thought process."
Now it’s unclear whether Gailey meant it’s not part of the thought process because there are three games still left in the regular season or it’s not part of the thought process in terms of an early draft need. I would tend to believe it’s the former. Either way based on Gailey’s comment on Monday that he has no questions about Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback, that is probably a more telling answer.

Buffalo Rumblings Should The Bills Bet The Farm For Andrew Luck?

O.K. - hands up - who is sick of watching the Bills?

I've been watching this team forever (hyperbole - 23 years) and this is the first season in which i've just stopped watching games. The defense sucks, Fitzpatrick doesn't know what a pocket is or how to use one and George Edwards is in way over his head.

I think it's time for the Bills to do something drastic - go all Atlanta Falcons on Andrew Luck.

Buffalo Rumblings Happy Turkey Day People

Ahhh Turkey Day - sorry for all you folks out of the country (CBF where are you?????) - but this is one of my favorite holidays.  Save for Columbus day because Chris obviously found the United States and no one was here or came here before (Aliens ?!?!? ;)  ) - but I digress.

I thought it would be fun to do a post to tell everyone what everyone is doing and any other random non-Bills related stuff is happening for your Turkey Day.

OL Chris Hairston is looking ready to roll at left tackle this week.
Hairston is working during the individual position portion of practice as the starting left tackle. Its the position he manned after Demetrius Bell went down with a shoulder injury in Week 4.
Hairston has not played in the last two games for the Bills due to a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 6 against the Giants.

Nix hired Chan Gailey last year, drafted defensive tackle Marcell Dareus this year, and has built a talented offense around lightly regarded players such as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, running back Fred Jackson, receiver Stevie Johnson, tight end Scott Chandler and receiver David Nelson. The Bills have responded with a breakthrough season so far, and are 5-2 and tied with New England for first in the AFC East.
-- Kudos to Ted Thompson, Green Bay general manager.

Great break down. Shows why John Beck is terrible and Bills fans shouldn't be overly confident our pass rush or defensive issues are solved. Simply put: The Redskins are bad and John Beck is worse than bad.

Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to be an intriguing story for the Bills, but he has completed just four of the 17 deep shots he has attempted this season and has gone deep on just 8.4% of his drop-backs

"Make the throw," he said. "Part of it was throwing it off my back foot and just not stepping into it getting out there. I can make that throw off my back foot as well though. It’s just not making the throw. Unfortunately it happened twice and it’s something that I have to address, fix and not (let) happen again."

Buffalo Rumblings Charting The Buffalo Bills Offensive Passing Game

Six weeks of the NFL season is behind us and the Buffalo Bills are 4-2 heading into their bye week. They've won some games against some really good opponents and have been competitive in every single game they've played losing by a combined 6 points in their 2 losses - one of those losses was a field goal as time expired.

I thought it would be a good time to reflect on some aspects of the Bills offense and try to chart some tendencies of the Bills passing game.  I wanted to look at how Fitzpatrick threw the ball short (Right, Left, Middle) and deep (Right, Left, Middle) so I used NFL.com's playbook and basically searched for key phrases in every game.  It sounds tedious but it really only took me about 25 minutes to do so it wasn't that big of a deal.

A short pass is designated as a pass that travels 15 yards (at least that's from what I can tell, there is no legend) and a deep pass is one that is 16 yards or longer.  I thought it would be better (and easier for me, honestly) to include passes where penalties were assessed on pass plays because we can still see how the Bills were going to attack the defense.  So if you're counting the pass plays and see Fitzpatrick had more throws than what the stat sheet said that's why.

"If you rely totally on (takeaways) you’re going to be in trouble before it’s over with because you don’t get them all the time," Chan Gailey told Buffalobills.com. "So we have to continue to improve our overall defense. We’ve played some pretty explosive offenses though and I think as time goes on our defense will continue to get better. But there’s no rule anywhere that says we can’t set a record for turnovers. We can do that. I hope it keeps going."

Buffalo Rumblings Color Me Skeptical

So far this year has been kind of weird for me.  During the off season I felt like I defended the Bills saying they weren't as bad as people made them out to be.  Now they are sitting at 4-1 and I feel like the Bills aren't as good as they are made out to be.  I guess that's parity in the NFL and just goes to show you that the cliche "Any Given Sunday" exists for a reason.  I actually like a lot of things that the Bills have done so far this year, i'm close to buying into this team but i'm skeptical for a few reasons that i'll list below.  One things for sure, the Bills have the opportunities to make me a Billeiver over the next few weeks.

"I’m anticipating it," said McGee of the nickel corner role with respect to Sunday’s game. "I’m not too sure how they’re going to do it with me coming back, if I’ll be at corner or slot or playing both, but I definitely expect to do that because coming in that was my role."

Bills DT Torell Troup, who sustained a cracked bone in his hand plans to practice this afternoon after getting fitted for a cast.
That according to one of his recent posts on his twitter account.
TorellTroup Getting ready for practice. Gotta wear the big cast on my hand lol. Nothin will stop me
Head coach Chan Gailey said Wednesday night that while Troup will play with the hand injury down the line, he didn’t expect him to play this Saturday in the preseason opener.
Troup told Buffalobills.com he wants to play against Chicago.
"I have no clue yet. I’m just going to see what the coaches say," Troup told Buffalobills.com. "Hopefully I can play. You know I want to play."

Buffalo Rumblings Why Fix The Bills' Defensive Line First?

Ed. Note: Another good, front page worthy FanPost that I greatly appreciate seeing on a busy day for Matt and I. Nice work, J2. - BG

The question as to why Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey have decided to fix the run defense before the pass rush and offensive line is one that gets a lot of play here on Buffalo Rumblings. Some view it as an old school philosophy that doesn't mean as much as it used to, and some still live and die by the "run and stop the run" philosophy. Honestly, I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle, but there is some good evidence that stopping the run is a great place to start for the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo Rumblings The Aaron Williams Pick

Aaron Williams was the 34th pick in the 2011 NFL draft.  The Bills had a whole day to re-watch tape of Williams and make their decision on picking him so you know that they liked him as a player.

There are other things about the Williams pick though that make me very excited about him as a player - he's a great blend of need and talent at corner.  He was projected to go late first round so by all accounts those projections were right and the Bills not only got great value, but also a potentially great player

Buffalo Rumblings The Moats Plan

I wonder fellow Rumblers if the plan to move Moats to the inside has been the plan all along.  I know that I was perplexed on the idea of moving him inside but he really is a "tweener" for that OLB role.  He isn't your traditional 3-4 OLB because he's a little "small" - for comparisons sake - Merriman is 6-4 265 while Moats is 6-2 250.

We all know that the jump from College to the NFL is a tough one - a leap that most cannot make actually.  It's doubly tough if you've been playing at a smaller college like James Madison like Arthur Moats has.  You don't have the better coaches and you don't play against elite competition.  I think this is why he started at OLB last year even though they planned on moving him inside at some point.

More after the jump...

"I am happy that the players and the owners have reached an agreement. This has been a long, arduous process for everyone. But in the end, we have a deal that is fair to both our players and the teams and, at the same time, protects the integrity of our game heading into the future. And that is extremely important as we move forward. To our fans, I say thank you for your patience and your understanding during these past four months. So with this great news today, it is time for all of us to focus on the 2011 season and look ahead to Training Camp. I’m excited about the direction our team is heading as we enter the upcoming season and I know our players and fans share in that excitement."

NFLN: Owners pass resolution - up to players.

Looks like the owners are being explained the CBA by league executives right now (6:41 PM Eastern). Players will hold a conference call at 8:00 PM Eastern and vote as well. This could be resolved in an hour or 2 but the fact that the owners have a resolution in hand and are being explained it right now is great news. Update: Owners have passed resolution. Update: Vote was 31-0 with Raiders abstaining. Update: LaConfora says NFLPA won't necessarily vote - still some outstanding issues - global settlement and re-certification
