Managers are like fine wine and everyone has differing opinions on fine wine (managers).
At Last Someone In The Press Understands...
Tom Verducci of si.com finally gets what journalsts such as buster olney and dare i say richard griffin (his competence is in question here)
"The Blue Jays have no interest in shortstop Orlando Cabrera, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Marco Scutaro, Toronto's expected starting shortstop, is younger than Cabrera and posted a better adjusted OPS and more RBIs last year, so why would they shell out more money and forfeit a draft pick? "
So heap the praise on Verducci because finally someone understands that just because the Jays have had a recent problem with shortstops doesn't mean they'll sign the first well-known shortstop available.
Thank you Tom :)
Shop at Cubs
the blatantly obviousness of felix pie's availability begs the question?
Should the Jays try and acquire him for a decent price? Even though The Jays are quite crowded at the outfield posistions he's got to be worth a flyer.
And should the Jays try and acquire rich hill he had a good era in 2007 and surely brad arnsberg could work well with him
note: both are out of minor league options
double note: in my opinion only if its a decent price :)
A Few Thoughts...
has anyone considered bobby abreu for the jays? no one seems to be taking an interest and as shown on espn.com he is a consistent performer.
Also Braden Looper would seemingly fit into the Jays rotation.
Scott Carson at sportsnet goes over some 'reclamation projects' :
RHP Tony Armas: Another classic case of being held back by injuries, the most starts he's made in a season to date is 34 back in 2001 for the Expos. Still just 30 years old, Armas had a 2.54 ERA in 17 AAA starts last season and is currently pitching in his native Venezuela this winter. Seems like the perfect non-roster invitee to me.
LHP Mark Hendrickson: The tall lefty, who started his Major League career with the Jays back in '02, has at least been healthy. He has pitched better as an American Leaguer, and perhaps a return to Toronto might be just the tonic to turn around a career that might be on its last legs.
RHP Jason Jennings: The 2002 N.L. Rookie of the Year, like Clement, would be an injury reclamation project. Elbow woes limited him to just five starts with Texas last season, but the fact that he's just 30 years means it wouldn't cost anything for a look-see.
RHP Braden Looper: A one-time closer turned starter had back-to-back, 12-win seasons for the Cardinals in 2007-08. Of the lower-tier free agents, he seems to be the healthiest, having only made one trip to the DL in his career.
RHP Mark Prior: As long as we're trying to find a diamond in the rough, why not take a look at the former ace of the Cubs, who has only made nine starts since the end of the 2005 season. Like Clement, Prior hasn't pitched since 2006, and if he could ever regain his health, they might have something here. And he's still only 28.
C Javier Valentin: The switch-hitting catcher would be the perfect compliment for Rod Barajas as the Jays wait on the arrival of prospect J.P. Arencibia. Valentin is used to being a back-up and not likely to chirp about lack of playing time.
thoughts anyone?
If you were GM...
If you were currently the GM of the Jays what offseason moves would you make, if at all. Taking into account payroll contracts etc.
Should be interesting to hear peoples thoughts...
Personally I would trade B.J Ryan for a shortstop or starting pitcher of some kind (any ideas on who) then create a closerr by commitee woth Carlson, Downs and League. I would then try to sign Juan Rivera as a stopgap to Snider, and start Snider at AAA personally no ideas for catcher other thn a one-year deal as another stopgap to Arencbia. Other ideas include pursuing Fielder and not Burnett.
Any Others?
Of Course The Athletics fan says this...
hey new here first post :)
anyone else not like this guys idea?
Two quick trade predictions: Peavy to the Dodgers, Huston Street to the Cardinals. The Blue Jays, as the fourth-best team in the AL East for the foreseeable future, should perhaps consider trading Roy Halladay and extracting max value for one of the five best pitchers in baseball...but I don't think they will, even though they could get 6-7 prospects and instantly have one of the top 5 farm systems in the game on the basis of that one trade if they did.
of course its the a's fan's idea to do with rebuilding
