Lyle Overbay's Receiving Ability Will Help, But Not Enough

In the Infinite Thread about Lyle Overbay, we talked a lot about defense, since it's fairly obvious that that's where his primary surplus value lies relative to the other potential first basemen on...

Greg Linnelli To Replace Rocco DeMaro

The actual headline is about Stan Savran, but it includes the news that Greg Linnelli will be doing pre- and post-game for the Pirates this year. Also, it appears that 970 will be the ESPN station, with five hours of local programming per day.

Kenshin Kawakami?

Per DK, there's a lot of talk about the Pirates trading for him. B-R says he's arb-eligible after next year, but don't guys from NPB work differently? I'm going on the assumption that he's a FA...

The A’s, meanwhile, get a heck of a return on investment from Davis’ tenure. Two and three-quarter seasons resulting in more than five and a half wins as well as two relief prospects for the cost of a waiver claim.

Fuck you, Dave Littlefield.

Now be nice. 25 years is a nice run, but I'll bet he was hoping for something more like 40.

What if we did this?

Fangraphs notes that Bill Hall is most likely going to become a free agent this winter. What if we put him at 3B, moved Pedro to 1B, and left Walker to get better at 2B? No one loves the FA upgrade...

Last year, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Championship, our last Championship. Now we’re 31 and we’re counting. I don’t intend for this young team that we’re building in Pittsburgh today to hit 35. I intend to beat that record of 35, and we’re going to get there before we hit the 35th anniversary.

One for the files

As I've argued here a number of times, I think Neal Huntington can be kind of a dick. Not in the sense that pretty much all high level executives are dicks, but in the sense that he can be petulant...

Not to pile on with Andy LaRoche here, but he doesn't even make solid contact in batting practice anymore. Watching him right now. Not sure what's happened to him, really. He never looked like he was going to be a star or anything, but there were periods where he consistently stung the ball. There is nothing of the kind anymore.

James McDonald - Pitch Speed and Stamina

So I thought I'd check, after another superb start from James McDonald last night, how his speed held up through eight scoreless innings. As you may recall, there were some serious concerns about...

Just to give you an idea

about Garrett Jones' crazy-low BABIP in August: in order to balance out his August and end the year at his career BABIP (±.300, majors and minors), he'll have to BABIP .483 in September. He had a...

Is there anyone in the organization that you think could make a difference in 2011?

Now that we're all into the acceptance phase of 2010, let's prepare to grieve for 2011. We all know that there's no significant help that's close - our best players are all in AA or below, and none...

Doumit working out fine

Yes, we all cringe when the ball is hit to him in right field. And yes, Snyder seems much steadier behind the plate. But the bottom line is that Project: Resurrect Doumit's Value is coming along...

Anyone else think Neyer's being a schmuck?

In this piece, stating that Pedro's not Rookie of the Year material. Now, to be clear, I think he's right on that point: barring an amazing September, Pedro has simply not been the best rookie in...

Jason Bay Out For The Year

Due to ongoing headaches from his concussion (in which he did not impact his head, but did continue to play after a "whiplash" incident). Another lost year for the Mets. I wonder if Bay can rebound...

What if they did move Pedro?

Most of us have been pleasantly surprised by Pedro Alvarez' defense at third. Not that he's been a stud, but UZR/150 has him just a bit worse than 12 runs below average. SSS and all that, but it...

Bad News On Steve Pearce

30

From last night's PBC Blog Liveblog: "9:38: NEWS UPDATE: The late-July injection into the left knee of first baseman Steve Pearce didn't work, so he is scheduled for surgery by team doctor Patrick DeMeo on Wednesday." I assume this means he's done for the year. UPDATE (8/4): Out for 4 months. So that means he can start getting back into shape at the beginning of December. Too late for winter ball? I'm not actually sure there's anything for him to do other than get back in shape and revive his swing, so maybe minicamp and an early arrival at ST would suffice.

Gorkys Hernandez Breaks A Finger

Just when he was starting to look valuable. Maybe he recovers quickly enough, plays this winter, and gets to Indy early next year, full value regained, but this can't help matters.

So what's going on with Duke?

I'm inspired to ask by DK's phrasing, that Duke once again "hit a wall": was effective for several innings, and then became the batting practice thrower that he was a few years back. Now, I suspect...
