Arrowhead Pride Poll: The projected lifespan of the Palko/Stanzi Era lovefest.

Let's be honest:  You guys are fickle.

When Brodie Croyle was our quarterback, you wanted Huard.  When Damon Huard was our quarterback, you wanted Thigpen.  When Tyler Thigpen was our quarterback, we all cheered at his antics (Remember that long bomb he caught?  Yeah, me too.), but we all realized that he wasn't the kind of quarterback we could build a franchise around.

We got Matt Cassel from the Patriots and we all thought it was a steal.  Then, he struggled and we wanted Brodie back.  Then, Cassel had an appendectomy and we actually got Brodie back and realized how dumb we were.

Cassel has been struggling again and the tide of opinion amongst the vast throngs of fans on Arrowhead Pride has slowly turned on him and, as the back-up QB is always the most popular guy on the roster, many have been crowing for the beginning of the Tyler Palko and/or Ricky Stanzi era.

After all, how could it possibly be worse, right ... ?

So, with history to guide us, I'd like to ask:  How long it will be before we are, once again, wishing Matt Cassel a speedy recovery and hoping he can come back to save us from what we've wished upon ourselves?

Arrowhead Pride The Numbers: Matt Cassel vs. the Quarterbacks of the Future!

It's become more than clear to many on this site that Matt Cassel is not the answer for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Clearly, there's another QB on the roster who is likely better than Cassel (*cough*Palko*cough*) as we'll find out this Sunday and, even if that guy isn't the answer, Cassel's injury will force the Chiefs to transition to the one, true savior (*cough*Stanzi*cough*) of the future Chiefs.

So, because certainly we all know more than Pioli and Haley and, obviously, the numbers will bear out our argument, let's take a look at what our miserable, no good, below average QB (you know, Matt Cassel) looks like against the true, legitimate Quarterbacks of the Future!

(For the record, that last bit sounds even better if you imagine it said with a booming, echoing voice.)

Let me introduce lowly Matt Cassel's competition:

In cases (such as Sam Bradford's) in which Cassel has been in Kansas City longer than the competition has been in the NFL, only the years in which both players were in the NFL will be considered.

In cases (such as Matt Ryan's) in which the competition has been in the NFL longer than Cassel has been in Kansas City, only the years in which Cassel was in Kansas City will be considered.

Let's go to the numbers!

You know, if the Chiefs are still looking for offensive line depth ...

"When Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis opted not to retain Tom Cable as head coach, the general feeling in the locker room was that it was a bad mistake. Punter Shane Lechler predicted there would be an exodus of free agents, despite the team’s encouraging 8-8 finish.

"Now it appears the exodus might be starting.

"Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the NFL’s best cover cornerbacks, has had his contract voided, allowing him to become a free agent and preventing the Raiders from using their franchise tag to keep him, according to ESPN."

(You know, in case you missed it (like I did) when GonzosDirtyTrailer and hmills110 broke it yesterday.)

On ESPN Radio's Doug Gottlieb show:

Doug: Chiefs or Ravens?
Tony: Ravens.
Doug: You're not just drinking some hater-ade there?
Tony: No, I still love Kansas City. They're still in my heart. But the Ravens are just a really, really good football team.

I really am going to hate to have to beat him in the Super Bowl.

Arrowhead Pride Hard-hitting Training Camp Interviews by JacinB

Yesterday, I took my son to Training Camp.  It was a first for both of us.  And, while trying to get the players to hang around just a little longer on their way out, I decided to try to get the players talking a little so that a few more kids could get a few more autographs.  Here are there answers to my hard-hitting questions ...

Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have released offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.

Twitter: Adam Schefter

Three time Pro Bowler at right guard, cut by the Eagles after battling depression in 2008 and injuring his back and being on the I.R. for all of 2009.

Mr. Pioli, provided that he can be signed for the vet minimum and no guaranteed money, I have found your next target.

See if you can follow me here.

Earlier today, ArrowheadPride posted this on Twitter:
"Chiefs have a player in the building taking a physical (not Thomas Jones related). Stay tuned... "

That same ArrowheadPride (@ArrowheadPride) is following a 'Shaun Smith' on Twitter (@sjs91).

That Shaun Smith has a Chiefs logo as his image.

That Shaun Smith also, despite having his tweets protected so we can't read them, has a link to the official homepage of the Shaun Smith who is the Nose Tackle of the Cleveland Browns ( http://www.shaunsmith91.com/ )

So, is it safe to assume that Shaun Smith is the next new Chief ... ?! I'd think it is.

The Redskins have brought in former NFL bad boy Bill Romanowski for an interview to be the team's next strength and conditioning coach, FOXSports.com has learned.

Glazer: Romanowski interviews as strength coach

So, apparently steroid abuse and 'roid rage incidents are enough to get you a job in the NFL as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. This is exactly why I'm glad Shanahan didn't wind up here (and why the Broncos should be glad he's gone).

The Chargers are tied with the [4]th easiest schedule in 2010 based on the 2009 regular-season results. The Chargers’ 2010 opponents had a combined winning percentage of .453 in 2009. Oakland has the toughest schedule of the AFC West teams in 2010. Its 2009 opponents were a combined .500. Kansas City’s opponents had a .488 winning percentage and Denver’s opponents had a .484 winning percentage.

Chargers have easiest path in 2010

Based on that, I'd say the whole AFC West looks to have an easy road in 2010. Besides the Chargers 4th easiest schedule, the Broncos have the 9th easiest and the Chiefs the 10th easiest. The Raiders, with the toughest schedule of all AFC West teams, is tied for the 16th easiest schedule.

Arrowhead Pride So, I took LJ's advice.

That's right, I Googled his dad.  As it turns out, the guy sounds like a real class act.

Meanwhile, [Larry Johnson, Sr.'s] successes have been so significant that he is now mentioned among the favorites to land the Nittany Lions' head job whenever Joe Paterno retires.

"Larry's not out for Larry," Zook said. "Larry's out for the program ... He's got all the right things in perspective. He doesn't beat his chest. He lets his work show for itself."

Too bad the son didn't come away with any of his father's better qualities.

FoxSports: PSU coach Larry Johnson stays close to southern roots.

Arrowhead Pride How to deal with LJ: An "If I were Pioli ..." Fan Repository.

There's been a lot of activity on the site today on what we should do with LJ.  Cut him.  Bench him.  Suspend him.  Let him and Haley go behind closed doors and hug it out.  Regardless of which group you fall into, you likely have ideas of how you'd like to see the Chiefs' resident malcontent dealt with, particularly after his latest outburst.

Unfortunately, while we don't get to be the one making the final call on LJ's fate and ultimately don't get any input into how we would deal with him, we can (thanks to ArrowheadPride) each make an "If I were Pioli ..." statement about how we would solve this particular problem.

And, hey, putting them all here -- in one place -- allows us to see others' proposals without having them clog the conversations in other threads.

As for me?  Well, my proposal is after the jump ...

San Diego at Kansas City: With the exception of Tennessee, the Chargers are probably the most disappointing team in the league this season. With all the talent on that roster, there's no excuse whatsoever for a 2-3 record. The 'Bolts have beaten Kansas City three straight times, but their two victories last season were by one point each. Coming off what was nothing short of a beatdown from the Broncos and with a short work week to prepare, give me the upstart Chiefs in an upset on Sunday. And if someone happens to notice Shawne Merriman on the field (13 tackles through five games), please let me know. I haven't been able to spot him all year.

"I Photoshopped Tony Gonzalez's head shot onto a certain performer's head on the DVD cover of, um ... well ... er ... Hmmm, how shall I say this? An alternative adult video. You couldn't tell it wasn't him, and I used his rookie head shot to make it seem like it was something he did in college. I then posted 30 copies of my work throughout the Chiefs locker room while the team was at practice.

"The place was dead silent when they got back in and were smacked in the face by their teammate's supposed 'dirty little secret.' I mean, this place was dead silent, (and they were all) staring at him as if they were awaiting an explanation.

"He grabbed it and just yelled, 'Friggin' Glazer!' It was classic."

Jay [Glazer] recalls another favorite prank ...

Just caught this on the Jay Glazer's blog on FoxSports. Would've been great to have been in the locker room for this one.

Arrowhead Pride Minnesota drops WR Bobby Wade; good pick-up for KC?

The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Bobby Wade, who led the team in receptions the past two years.

Wade confirmed Thursday he has been let go, but declined comment.

With first-round draft pick Percy Harvin joining the team, the Vikings had fewer opportunities for Wade. He is starting his seventh year in the NFL.

Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice are the other two receivers atop the depth chart heading into Sunday's opener at Cleveland. Berrian has been slowed by a hamstring injury.

Wade routinely drew praise from coach Brad Childress and he made his share of clutch catches over the middle. Wade had 53 receptions for 645 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Source: Vikings cut leading WR Wade days before opener

Leading receiver on a team who suddenly became Receiver heavy in the off-season.  Good at making clutch catches over the middle.  Experienced, but not necessarily old.

Any chance Pioli is making a call?

Arrowhead Pride Jarrad Page earns his Arrowhead?

Doug Gottlieb just reported (on his show's SportsCenter, anyway) that Safety Jarrad Page is the first, and thus far only, Chief to earn his Arrowhead and solidify his place on the roster of 53.

I can't find any other information on this, however, and there isn't anything up about it just yet on ESPN's site.  I'm assuming that it'll be announced 'officially' sometime soon.  Can anyone else verify this story?

Arrowhead Pride Lamar, Carl and Marty vs. Clark, Scott and Todd

From the FanPosts  -Joel Marty1_medium_medium

Take a look at how closely this year matches resembles the Chiefs two decades back ...

After a playoff appearance in 1986 (which the Chiefs lost in the Wild Card game) followed by two disappointing seasons, in 1989, Lamar Hunt hired Carl Peterson as Chiefs' General Manager (and President and CEO).  Hunt fired Frank Gansz and hired Marty Schottenheimer.

Marty was known as a hard-nosed, take-no-crap kind of coach with a demanding training camp regimen and a reputation for finding ways to win (200-126-1 overall, but 5-13 in the postseason).

After a playoff appearance in 2006 (which the Chiefs lost in the Wild Card game) followed by two disappointing seasons, in 2009, Clark Hunt hired Scott Pioli as Chiefs' "President of Football Operations" (ie: General Manager).  Pioli fired Herm Edwards and hired Todd Haley.

Todd is also known as a take-no-crap kind of coach with a demanding training camp regimen.  Evaluation of his reputation and, as a head coach, finding ways to win will have to wait for now.

In the 1988 and 1989 NFL Drafts, the Chiefs had used their first round picks on a Defensive End (Neil Smith) and a Linebacker (Derrick Thomas).  One became a Hall of Fame-level pass rusher, thanks to help from the other collapsing the pocket.

In the 2008 and 2009 NFL Drafts, the Chiefs have again used their first round picks on the Defensive Side of the ball (Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson, both Ends); with one expected to be a fierce pass rusher, with help from the other collapsing the pocket.

Early in his tenure, Carl was known for bringing in quality veteran players to help strengthen the team -- Barry Word, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen -- often players that other teams had given up on as too old (though, arguably, this would eventually become his downfall).  Early in his tenure, Scott has shown that he's willing to do the same thing -- bringing in Mike Vrabel, Zach Thomas, Amani Toomer, Bobby Engram -- again, players that other teams had given up on as too old.

00dcb0b75da74a62b1ff59243f36641f_medium_medium_mediumWhat Lamar, Clark and Marty built was a team that was a perennial play-off contender.  The first season together, they went from last in the AFC West to 2nd in the AFC West.  They missed the playoffs that season, but they made the playoffs in 7 of the next 9 years, with a combined record of 101-48-1 over those 10 seasons.

What Clark, Scott and Todd are trying to do is build a team that won't just be a one-shot playoff contender, but a perennial playoff contender.  This first season together, there are very real expectations that they'll go from last in the AFC West last season to 2nd in the AFC West (ahead of Oakland and Denver, behind only San Diego).

It's beginning to look as though history does, indeed, repeat itself.  And, for Chiefs fans, that's looking like a very, very good thing.

New Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli kept it in the family as he tried to upgrade the Chiefs' offensive line.

Pioli acquired two offensive linemen from the Miami Dolphins for undisclosed compensation, likely future draft considerations, two NFL sources said. The Dolphins are run by Bill Parcells, who is Pioli's father-in-law.

The Chiefs acquired guard/tackle Ikechuku Ndukwe and guard/center Andy Alleman. Ndukwe is expected to push for a starting spot at guard or tackle.

He was a starting guard for the Dolphins last season but was moved to tackle this year.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4419270
ESPN is reporting Alleman wasn't the only O-Line help Pioli brought over from the Fins.

Arrowhead Pride The decline of Turtle.

Just spotted this news story: In bed with Courtney Love ... and her Turtle: Rock widow posts intimate snaps on Twitter.

She’s currently fighting a libel lawsuit after slamming a designer on Twitter so you’d think Courtney Love would think twice before posting on the micro-blogging site.

But it seems the legal drama hasn’t put her off.

The 44-year-old rock widow has posted pictures of herself in bed with a turtle on her head.

First the off-the-field issues with hitting some girl in China, now bedding down with Courtney Love.  I can't help but think that Haley isn't going to be happy about this one.  Does this effect Turtle's chances of being in the final 53 ... ?

These teams have absolutely zero shot at the playoffs this season.

Kansas City Chiefs: Totally new coaching staff and a revamped defense, but still a few too many missing pieces. Give Scott Pioli a couple of years and this team will be back in the playoffs every year like it was in the late '90s. They're just not there yet.

Arrowhead Pride More of the same old same old in Oakland?

First-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey wasn't nearly as effective. Russell missed the speedster on two deep attempts and Heyward-Bey finished with one catch for 8 yards as Dallas often

"We're going to see a lot of that this season," Heyward-Bey said. "I saw a lot of that in college. But the important thing is the win." SOURCE

DHB is already saying we're going to see a lot of him being ineffective this season, with Russell tossing him passes? Sounds like great news for Chiefs fans, not-so-great news for Raiders.

Arrowhead Pride Woohoo! I just got banned from Mile High Report ...

I just got banned from Mile High Report for posting the following from WalterFootball.com ...

With that in mind, this story is more about Denver's ineptitude than Chicago's triumph. I don't care if the Broncos walk away with seven Hall-of-Famers from this draft class; I will still give them an F in my 2009 NFL Draft Grades. Trading away someone of Cutler's caliber is unforgivable. If Mark Sanchez doesn't pan out - I'm assuming Denver and Jacksonville will swap picks (more on this below) - this move will set this franchise back for years.

The sad thing is that this all could have been avoided. Owner Pat Bowlen should have immediately called Josh McDaniels into his office and smacked him upside the head once the new head coach entertained the idea of trading for Matt Cassel. And once this news broke out to the media, Bowlen should have fired McDaniels on the spot. Doing so would have mended his relationship with Cutler, and he would have never been forced into this predicament.

Instead, the Broncos dealt one of their few strengths, leaving them with a mediocre offense to pair with their putrid defense and brain-dead coach. Yes, they now have a torrent of draft picks - they obtained Chicago's 2009 and 2010 first-rounders and a 2009 third-round choice - but who's to say that any of those selections will pan out? After all, McDaniels preferred Cassel, a system quarterback with limited arm strength over Cutler, an exceptionally talented signal-caller with a rocket arm.

If I were a Denver fan, I'd be scared to death. McDaniels clearly can't read talent. He's only 32 years old. He has no head-coaching experience. The defense is the NFL's worst. Orton is injury-prone and inconsistent. Brandon Marshall is hurt. And Mike Shanahan is miles away, laughing hysterically at this entire situation.

Instead of worrying about claiming the AFC West, I'd be concerned with winning a single game. And I certainly wouldn't be calling my friends, boasting about how my NFL team just made a trade for the ages. Instead, I'd lock the door to my office or room, turn off my cell phone and go back to downloading porn with tears in my eyes.

Guess they don't like me.  Oh well.
