I read that the Padres might claim Belisle off waivers from the Rockies. Just wanted to tell everyone. Do you think he will help the Padres?

Beyond the Box Score Who are going to be the buyers of 2009?

I was thinking what teams were going to be buying players this deadline. Last year the Brewers, Yankees, and many other teams went and traded top-notch prospects for good players. Here is a list of what I think some teams are going to be trading for.

Yankees - They are always perennial buyers when the deadline comes around. Last year they traded for Ivan Rodriguez, Damaso Marte, Xavier Nady, Johhny Nunez, and Matt Cusick while giving up Alberto Gonzalez, LaTroy Hawkins, Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen, Ross Ohlendorf, Jose Tabata, and Kyle Farnsworth. This did not even make a dent in the stacked minor league rosters in the Yankees Organization. This season, it looks like the Yankees will need is bullpen help and maybe a catcher. There are many choices the Yankees have. For a long estimation, say the Reds will be knocked out of playoff contention by July, the Yankees could maybe get Ramon Hernandez who is on his contract year, for cheap. I would say maybe one or two prospects for Hernandez. If the Yankees could, they could kill two birds with one stone and maybe nab Francisco Cordero along with Hernandez. That would cost the Yankees more, and they would have to take on his large contract. Another pitcher the Yanks would be able to grab could be Heath Bell from the Padres. He is a top-notch reliever. But because the Padres are rebuilding, and wanting to cut payroll, either he will be ridiculously expensive or really cheap. I am guessing more towards the expensive side. He probably would cost around 2-3 good prospects. I don't know what the Yankees need yet, depending on the health of their major league roster, but towards the deadline, we will clearly see their needs.

Red Sox - They have a stacked team. The farm is full of major league ready players. The only concern right now is shortstop and Big Papi's bat. If Ortiz isn't hitting, the Nats and the BoSox have a deal worked out for a Nick Johnson - Manny Delcarmen swap. This will give a left-handed bat to the order, and won't weaken the bullpen or the farm. I know that when you read "shortstop" you were probably surprised. The BoSox probably won't go take on another veterans contract to sustain the needs of shortstop. But if they do trade for a shortstop, I would like to see Jack Wilson in a Red Sox uniform. He is a good fielder, and has a sub-par bat. No power but okay contact and good speed. If the Red Sox were to trade for him, it would probably cost 1-3 okay prospects or Jed Lowrie(only in a extreme circumstance). The Red Sox might be one of the big buyers at the deadline.

Brewers - The Brewers got screwed out of a large amount of top-notch prospects when they traded for C.C. Sabathia. Now they have there sights set on Jake Peavy and Mark DeRosa. They don't have much left in their minor league system, but it would be enough to get one or two more starters to make the push for the playoffs. If they did trade for Peavy, and he waived his no-trade clause, it would cost the Brewers dearly. Say goodbye to what prospects they have left, and brace in for the weakest farm system in baseball for many years to come. DeRosa might be a cheap acquisition, maybe 1-3 okay to good prospects. But the Indians might hold out for a bigger deal on DeRosa thinking that they will get what they got for Blake. Whatever the Brewers do, exspect them to make a big run for the pennant.

Braves - They want another starting pitcher. I hear a lot about them trying to make a deal for Peavy. This will cost their famr syste dearly, but they will recover. I don't know if they will get Peavy to waive his no-trade clause, but if he does, they will be a good fit for Peavy. I don't think they need anything more for a playoff run, but when we get closer to the deadline.

Phillies/Mets - I think both of them have set rosters for a pennant race. If they do go to buy players, it will probably be a starting pitcher. I don't think they will need to get more players on the deadline.

Dodgers - They are 7 games ahead of second place in their division already. I don't think they will need to get anymore players for the pennant race. They may though, trade for a veteran to lead them in the playoffs. I don't know who this is yet.

This is a small outline for what teams might buy at the deadline. I might of left out teams such as Toronto, Texas, and the Angels, but I don't think they will be buying any players right now. The Blue Jays will probably fall out of contention, the Rangers will cool down and the pitching will shatter all hope, the Angels will keep on chugging. Tell me what you think of this outline and any thoughts?

I hate to spam like this, but just wanted to say that the Rockies signed Jaun Rincon. The link is to the transaction page at MLB.com. He might be a OK reliever this year, but his stuff isn't that great.

Gaslamp Ball Who will be dealt this season?

With the Padres in turmoil, no one knows what is going to happen next. Jody Gerut just was dealt to the Brewers for Tony Gwynn Jr. But who else will be dealt? Here I have made semi-okay predictions to what players will be dealt and what they will give to the Padres.

Jake Peavy - There are many teams that are trying to get Peavy. Because he is not on his contract year, the Padres might be screwed out of 1-3 players. Peavy wants to stay in the National League, and if possible, the west coast. I see him getting the Padres 3-6 good prospects or 2 phenoms.

Adrian Gonzalez - He is leading baseball in homers right now. If you look at his stats, he has 15HR and only 29RBI. The starved-for-runs Padre lineup doesn't give him many spots to drive in mass amounts of runs. I don't really see the Padres dealing him with his low-cost contract and the part that he is one of the cornerstones in the Padres rebuilding. But if the Padres went to deal him, I see him getting the Padres 3-4 good prospects.

Brain Giles - Giles is one of the long lasting outfielders. He doesnt produce like he used to, but he still is a stick. The Padres renewed his $9 Million option. That means they are committed to his stick or that they will be able to get a big load of prospects for him. He isn't the best stick around, so I don't see him going anywhere until the July 31st Deadline when a team is desperate for a lefthanded bat in there order. So only if its on the deadline, the Padres won't be able to deal him. I see maybe 1-2 good prospects for the Padres if they can deal Giles.

Who do you think the Padres might deal to cut their payroll a little more. Can the Padres get a good minor league output if they deal some of their high-payed, veteran players? Tell me what you think.
