The Beavers may have been a quarter and a half away from a Rose Bowl, but they've now fallen past the Holiday, past the Sun (no-repeat clause), and the Emerald to the Maaco Las Vegas Bowl, well they will play BYU, a very good opponent out of the Mountain West Conference.

Get ready for an all out aerial Blitzkreig in this game-- it features two of the best quarterbacks in the country in Sean Canfield and Max Hall. Hall lead the MWC in passing with 280.7 yards per game, and is completing passes at a 67.5 percentage. He's the ninth most efficient passer in the country, which is interesting, because Sean Canfield ranks fourth in at statistic at exactly 70 percent.

Not only do the Cougars have a potent passing attatck with Max Hall, their running game is solid as well. They rank fourth in their conference in total passing, but their star running back, Harvey Unga, leads the conference in rushing at just over 92 yards per game. Unga is a junior, and just got over the 1,000 yard mark in BYU's most recent game against Utah, which they squaked out 26-23. JJ Di Luigi and BryanKarlyn, both sophomore running backs, are viable backups who both average around 20 yards per game.

Max Hall's favorite target is his tight end, senior Dennis Pitta. He became BYU's all-time leader in receptions in the Cougars' win over Utah last week, and is averaging 63.8 yards per game. While he leads the receivers, he's definitely not the only target the OSU secondary will have to watch out for: Max Hall likes to spread the ball around. Five receivers average over 30 yards per game for the Cougars. Like Pitta, sophomore McKay Jacobsen averages around 60 yards per game, and he's BYU's big-play threat. He has 21 catches for 529 yards, which means he's averaging around 25 yards per catch.

While BYU's offense gets most of the credit, their defense has been a major factor in their success as well. The Cougars are best known for overpowering MWC opponents with their offense, but their defense is talented as well. Senior defensive lineman Jan Jorgensen has ten and a half tackles for loss on the season, and is fourth in the conference with six and a half sacks. The Cougar secondary has 13 interceptions on the year, four of those going to junior defensive back Andrew Rich, and 3 to JR DB Brian Logan.

Overall, the BYU defense ranks fourth in the MWC, and 35th in the nation, giving up 331 yards per game. They've been giving up 112 rushing yards pe rgame and 219 passing yards per game-- All of which are below Oregon State's season offensive averages.

This will be the first time that the Las Vegas Bowl will feature two ranked teams, and it's the fourth time in a row BYU will have played in Vegas. Oregon State's last trip was in 2003, when they defeated New Mexico 55-14 in Mike Riley's first bowl game at OSU.

This looks like a great matchup between two teams who have had their ups and downs this season. It's also a interesting matchup between head coaches-- Mike Riley and OSU grad Bronco Mendenhall.

Game 7 Recap: Oregon State 74, Cal State Bakersfield 39

Aaah, doesn't that final score sound refreshing? The Beavers are now 4-3 and over the .500 mark.

After the recent blunder to Sacramento State, this is exactly what the Beavers needed to do at home against an inferior opponent. The win caps off a solid weekend of basketball for the Beavers, who defeated Colorado on Friday night, 74-69.

In this game, we saw more of what we've been seeing recently-- good things out of Jared Cunningham and Joe Burton. Interestingly enough, they were co-leading scorers in the game with thirteen points. I was only able to listen to this game on the radio, so it's hard for me to draw many conclusions. Read the remainder of this post to hear Craig Robinson's thoughts on the two freshmen.

Seth Tarver's defensive tenacity continues to impress. He tied Brent Barry's single-season record with eight steals in tonight's game, and did it in just 26 minutes. He had three steals right off the bat in Bakersfield's first three possessions that allowed OSU to build a quick seven point lead, then continued to lead the defensive effort for the remainder of the game. He was 4-for-4 from the line, 3-for-8 from the field and finished the game with 10 points.

His brother Josh had a great game as well, pitching in 12 points and four assists. He only missed one of his seven shots, which is good to see as he continues to develop his touch. As you'll see below, Craig Robinson feels that a big reason that Jared Cunningham is playing so well is because of what Josh has done to help him out during his freshman season.

The good free-throw shooting continues. The Beavers were 19-of-21 on Friday night, and were 19-of-22 against Bakersfield today. Cunningham was 5-of-5, Seth was 4-of-4, Haynes was 2-of-2, Wallace was 2-of-2, Burton was 5-of-6... so lots of guys are converting from the stripe.

After leading Cal State Bakersfield 38-24 at the half, Oregon State came out and shut the Roadrunners down on the offensive end in the second frame, holding them to just fifteen points. They had only six points in the paint compared to Oregon State's 26, and shot 21% from the field. It should also be noted that OSU shot a season high 58.3% from the field, and held their opponent to a season low 26.5%.

Coach Robinson's Postgame Comments:

On the good weekend of basketball...

This is what we should expect from ourselves, but you know how hard it is to get the guys in the right mindset. This was terrific because this was a game last year that we played last year on the road after two tough Pac-10 games and only won by six or so and had a tough time. The margin was much closer than it should of been last year, and we were all set up to do it again. Mid-way though the firs half, I wasn't sure how the game was going to go. I thought they responded very well to the adjustments we had to make in the second part of that first half, and then at halftime they were much more focused and much better on defense.

On the free throw shooting...

I told the team that I'm not even going to talk about our free-throw shooting... never underestimate the power of the whammy. That's how you win games. You beat teams by getting them into foul trouble early, then making your foul shots and playing good defense while executing your offense. We did all three of those things today.

On the poor three point shooting (1-12) during the game...

I'm not opposed to guys taking a three, but do it at the end of the shot clock. We could have run that same set all the way though, down to the shot clock, and still gotten that same shot. Why not look at the other option before you take the final option? That's something we need to get better at. The guys who were taking those shots were trying to shoot themselves out of the dark cloud they were under. I don't necessarily blame them but you have to know the situation.

On Joe Burton...

He's doing well and is really taking advantage of the opportunities he's been given. He's not playing a ton of minutes. I'm trying to work him in to not getting into foul trouble while playing good defense. Int the short period of this season, he's gotten better already. He had one foul in the game which I didn't think was his foul. He didn't have any others in teh game and he managed to mis maybe one shot in the game.. no, it was one foul shot... he was 4-for-4 from the field, and he led us in rebounding again. We're really pleased and w're hoping that his progression keeps going in an upward slopw.

On Seth Tarver, and him tying the single-game steals record with eight...

I told him that if I would of known that he was that close to breaking the record I would have left him in there, but when you do that sort of thing that's when guys get hurt, so I was glad I didn't know it. People don't understand how amazing of a statistic that is. That's really quote an accomplishment. At the beginning of the game in the locker room, I told Seth that he had to get us going right way. He came out and got three steals and we converted on all of them, and went up 7-0. Then had the ability to wistand a run by the other team. He's embraced the identity of this team.

On Jared Cunningham, who played 50 minutes of turnover-less basketball during the weekend...

He is quickly becoming a person who we can't take out of the game. He has played terrifically for a freshman. It's interesting, because we're turning the ball over more than we ever have, but our freshman are taking care of it. It should be noted that the reason why Jared is so good is because Josh is helping him be good. Josh Tarver has really stepped up for his this year. He had a great game for us tonight... 6-of-7 with four assists... and he has taken to showing Jared how to get into the offense and what to look for... and helped with the transition from high school to college a lot better.

Next up for the Beavers is a game December 12 on the road at Nebraska.

Haven't seen an official announcement yet, but ESPN's Ted Miller is reporting that the Beavers are headed to Vegas to play BYU. It makes sense... as you'll see in the open thread we had going earlier (below), all the other bowls involving Pac-10 schools have been announced. Quickly, it's: Arizona- Holiday, Stanford- Sun, USC- Emerald, and Cal- Poinsettia.

It's still unclear to me as to where the Beavers will go. What we know for sure: Oregon is in the Rose Bowl. Arizona is headed to the Holiday Bowl after their win over USC. But where will Stanford, Oregon State, and Cal go? The Beavers can't go to the Sun Bowl because of the no-repeat clause, so it'll likely be Stanford that goes there. That leaves Emerald, Vegas, and Poinsettia as possible bowls the Beavers could end up at.

[UPDATE, 3:22 PM] Okay, so here's what we know for sure.

Arizona is headed to the Holiday Bowl.

Stanford is heading to the Sun Bowl to play Oklahoma.

USC will play Boston College in the Emerald Bowl.

Cal is headed to the Poinsettia Bowl.

Which leaves Oregon State with the Vegas Maaco Bowl. So we're essentially waiting for the official announcement. It looks like BYU will be the opponent.

Game 6 Recap: Oregon State 74, Colorado 69

Coming in, the Beavers knew Colorado would be a great outside shooting team and that contesting shots would be key. Having played Sacramento State two weeks ago, a team that just made it rain from the outside in the first half, perphaps the Beavers knew what to do. Oregon State held CU to just 23.5% from three-- a mark well below their season average.

It was a close game throughout, but Oregon State trailed for much of the first half and beginning of the second. They never gave up though, and continued to fight and make plays on both sides of the ball to keep it close.

Rebounding plagued the Beavers, especially on the defensive side. They gave up 15 offensive board to the Buffaloes, allowing CU to get 23 second chance points. Several players had lapses on the boards- you could tell from the FSN telecast that Coach Robinson was very upset with Angus Brandt at times, but Joe Burton had some hiccups in the low box as well.

Ultimately, this game we decided at the foul line. Oregon State was 9-of-16 in the first half, but made up for it and really won to the game due to their 17-for-18 mark (95%) in the second half. Schaftenaar was 8-for-8 on the game, Cunningham was 7-of-7.... Haynes, Cunningham, Schaftenaar, and Seth Tarver all hit a pair of foul shots down the stretch to seal the game.

Individual player notes:

Calvin Haynes: Very glad that Calvin found his touch last night. Nineteen points, 6-of-9 shooting... that's the old Calvin we've been looking for this pre-season. You could tell that he had his confidence, as he was talking some off balance and contested shots, and sinking them. He also hit the big go-ahead basket with just over a minute to go.

Seth Tarver: His offensive game continues to improve. 14 points, 6-of-10 from the field in 32 minutes... that's the kind of performance we need from Seth all year.

Joe Burton/ Jared Cunningham: These two are very exciting to watch, and have asserted themselves in the upper eschelon of players on this team. You can see that CR is confident in them-- as they've started the last two (maybe three?) games, and are playing heavy minutes. They're both athletic in different ways-- Cunningham has the quicks to separate from defenders on the fast break, and Burton moves very well for a 295-pound big man. 13 points for Cunningham, 8 for Burton.

Angus Brandt: I'll hit on the other freshman while we're on the subject... the guy has some potential, but he really struggled rebounding against Colorado. Sometimes it looks like he's just outworked in the paint, but there was one time on a free-throws where he flat out didn't make much of an effort on his defender. I'm guessing that those are the things that CR is upset about the most.

Roeland Schaftenaar: I'm not sure that anyone knows the full story on Roeland except for the coaching staff, but it doesn't look like he is being utilized in the same way he was last season. Not sure if he's in a slump and the coaches just don't want to put him at the top of the key, or they actually want to see him down in the low block more. He only made one field goal, but the biggest stat in his line is the 8-of-8 free throw shooting. That was huge for the team down the stretch, as the Beavers made 17-of-18 in the second half.

Just like after Oregon State's late November 42-36 loss to USC, the more you look back on the game, the easier it gets to see just what could have been. The missed opportunities in (or near) the red zone were abundant.

It's hard to go through Oregon State's highlights from the game without thinking about the fumble recovery that put OSU at the UO 17 yard-line (result: field goal), or the 48-yard pass from Canfield to Quizz that put the Beavers deep into Oregon territory (result: field goal), but that's exactly what we're going to do with the help of Mike Parker. As you'll see, many of these highlights should have been followed up with an exuberant "TOUCHDOWN BEAVERS!!" call by Parker, but were not.

Let's get started.

Mike Parker: First down and five for Oregon, at it's 25 yard-line, just getting started... Masoli out of shoutgun, takes the pass from center, the ball is tipped, AND PICKED OFF BY DOCKERY!! Down the left sideline! Dockery inside the 25 and down he goes at about the 23. A 12 yard return for James Dockery, and the Beavers get the first turnover of the game, and they set up shop first and ten at the Oregon 23.

On Monday I claimed that turnovers would be a big factor in the game-- and they were. Oregon fumbled once and threw an interception, and it could have been worse than that. Remember OSU's kickoff at the very end of the first half that was almost fumbled? How about the snap that was well over Masoli's head late in the game? The Beavers won the turnover battle, but Oregon more than made up for their two mishaps with three killer fourth down conversions.

The Oregon State drive after the Dockery interception was a bad omen for the remainder of the game: it took a fourth down conversion to score a touchdown. Imagine if Riley would have called for a field goal at that point... it could have meant four first half field goals.

Mike Parker: It's an I formation-- power formation for the Beavers. Three tight ends, Jacquizz the running back... fourth and goal, turn, give to Quizz, running to the right, and QUIZZ IS IN! TOUCHDOWN BEAVERS!

Oregon State took an early 7-0 lead on that play, but Oregon came right back down the field and tied it up. Oregon State's next drive stalled at about the 25-yard line, and another Kahut field goal made it 10-7, Beavers. After Jeff Maehl burned James Dockery for a 73-yard score, the Beavers found themselves trailing for the first time of the game, 14-10. It was at this point that the game slowed down... both teams exchanged several punts... but Oregon State would be the next team to knock on the door:

Mike Parker: Trips formation to the right, play clock down to two, Canfield out of shotgun, throws over the middle to Jacquizz Rodgers, breaks one tackle at the 40, comes back to the 45, HAS A CHANCE DOWN THE LEFT SIDELINE!. 35-30. 25-20. Cuts back inside at about the 15 yardline!

He indeed had a chance there... perhaps OSU's best chance of scoring on that drive. After the long pass play got the Beavers to the Oregon 15, a penalty backed them up five yards, bringing up 1st and 15. A 9-yard pass to Kjos made it 2nd and 6-- then a Jacquizz Rodgers rush for no gain and an incomplete pass intended for James Rodgers brought out the field goal unit, and the Beavers brought it to within one: 14-13 Oregon.

Immediately after the field goal, Oregon regained possession with 7 minutes remaining in the half:

Mike Parker: On first down, Masoli, THE BALL IS LOOSE, being chased! The Beavers after it! The Beavers trying to come up with it! Matt Lagrone says he has it... and I believe he does. The ball knocked loose, AND LAGRONE RECOVERS FOR THE BEAVERS! And the Beavers have a first down at the Oregon 17!

And guess what? Again... Oregon State settles for a field goal. But nonetheless, the Beavers took a 16-14 lead.

Oregon would then take the lead with a touchdown by LaMichael James. I'll point out that the Ducks fumbled the ball a play before scoring on that drive... but Jeremiah Masoli recovered, and the Ducks took a 21-16 lead with 1:09 remaining in the half.

A pass interference call on Talmadge Jackson III (could he have been more obvious?) and four completions got the Beavers into Oregon territory at the 33. Another completion to Brady Camp (after a false start, ugh) set the Beavers up with a 2nd and 5 play:

Mike Parker: Second and five at the Oregon 28. Canfield out of shotgun, from the left hashmark, takes the snap from center, surveys his options, throws down the middle, CAUGHT BY JAMES RODGERS, TOUCHDOWN BEAVERS!

The Beavers then headed into the locker room with the lead, which never hurts the confidence levels heading into the second half. After a first half in which they settled for field goals way too many times, the Beavers needed to come out and drive the ball down the field and score, which is exactly what they did:

Mike Parker: Third and six from the nine, left has. Canfield from shotgun to throw, down the middle to Casey Kjos, TOUCHDOWN BEAVERS!!!

That made it 30-21 Beavers... and that's when Chip Kelly turned to the physicality of Legarette Blount, and it paid off with a quick score. That drive was when the first crucial Oregon fourth down conversion occured-- a quick slant from Masoli to Maehl on 4th and 6. After that, the Beavers got (guess what?) another field goal (score now 33-28), then Oregon scored a touchdown to take the lead for good (34-33).

Morgan Flint added a field goal for the Ducks early in the fourth quarter as Oregon attempted to chew up the clock. Oregon State's only drive of the fourth quarter was the one that ended in James Rodgers diving out of bounds just past the first down markers, oh-so-close to a crucial conversion. But Oregon regained possession of the ball, converted two first downs, successfully eating six minutes of clock to seal the victory.

I told you it's hard to rehash all those missed opportunities.

Ten plays into the game, Oregon State found themselves facing a 4th and Goal at the UO 1-yardline. Little did we know at that point that the game would be decided largely by the five fourth down conversion attempts in the game.

Oregon State was 1-of-2 on those opportunities. Oregon was 3-for-3.

The Beavers would be faced with a 4th and 15 opportunity late in the game and went for it-- an decision that many people are questioning in the aftermath of the game. The reality of the situation was that the Beavers were down four points at the time, and wanted to take the lead outright. Kicking a field goal would have put the Beavers within one-- but it would have also given the Ducks possession of the ball with about six minutes left. Either way-- the Beavers had to score, so Mike Riley was looking to get it out of the way early and put the pressure on the home team.

Two of Oregon's crucial fourth down conversions came on their final possession of the game in which they did chew up six minutes of clock after OSU didn't convert on the aforementioned 4th and 15. Both times the Beavers had the Ducks bottled up in awkward field position where kicking a field goal wasn't entirely feasible, and rolling the dice on fourth down obviously seemed more appealing to Coach Kelly. The way the Oregon offense was rolling, the Ducks were hard to stop-- and the three conversions were crucial in allowing them to seal the victory.

Earlier in the week, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley said that "What got you to this point will help you win the game."

He was right. The Beavers stayed true to themselves and did what they've done for most of the season-- both good and bad.

Penalties were an issue. Some were caused by the environment, some were questionable calls, some were completely preventable.

But beyond that, settling for field goals in the red zone was also an underlying theme throughout the contest, as it has been for large parts of the season. That was nothing we hadn't seen from OSU earlier in the year-- and it just required the offense to work twice as hard and get twice as many opportunities to match Oregon's point total. The Ducks coughed up the football, and the opportunities were there for Oregon State, the Beavs just couldn't punch it in. But with that said, great job to Justin Kahut for being clutch on field goals.

On the positive side, Sean Canfield played a great game, as expected. 24 of 36 passing, 306 yards, 2 touchdowns-- there's not much else you can ask for from a senior quarterback playing in his first Civil War. He didn't seem to be bothered by the atmosphere, he stayed poised, and made some great throws. There were a couple balls that were dropped, a couple balls that were off the mark, but overall-- great performance.

As for Quizz-- valiant effort as well. He had a rough night, running for 64 yards on 16 carries, but I still have to believe that his presence in the backfield opened up opportunities for Sean Canfield in the passing game. Quizz had 7 receptions for 73 yards himself.

James will probably remember the deep ball that he nearly got under, and the 4th and 15 ball that was just out of his reach, but he had a solid game as well. Ten catches for 134 yards and a touchdown plus 29 rushing yards off of 5 fly sweeps is no easy task.

Jeremiah Masoli again proved that he is hard to handle: 200 yards in the air, and 40 more on the ground. LaMichael James rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns... and Mr. Blount made his reappearance and rushed for 51 yards and a score. Jeff Maehl had the long 72 yard touchdown reception and finished with 138 total yards receiving.

Oregon State's performance tonight was consistent with how they've been playing all year. It definitely wasn't a letdown, but it definitely wasn't something miraculous either. It was a hard-fought football game that the Beavers unfortunately came out on the wrong side of.

Winning games of this caliber is what Oregon State needs to do to get to the next level. They've now had two chances in consecutive years to take that leap, but haven't been able to do it. They can't afford to wait much longer before they take that next step. Which means there are going to be big expectations on this squad next year.

This may be the first of many Civil Wars that decide the Pac-10 Champion. The Beavers can't afford to take another one on the chin.

This game is definitely a tough pill to swallow.

--Jake | (jake.buildingthedam@gmail.com) | Twitter
