Int'l signings

Confirmed international signings according to at least one local report: shortstops Jurickson Profar (Curacao), Luis Sardinas (Venezuela), and Luis Mendez (Venezuela), outfielder Chris Garia (Curacao), and pitcher Daniel De la Torre (Mexico).

Incidentally, Profar, who gained repute as an 11-year-old when he led Curacao to the 2004 Little League World Series title as that squad’s pitching ace but will play shortstop professionally, took batting practice at Rangers Ballpark today and went deep – from both sides of the plate. He’s 16.

Profar, Sardinas, and Garia are all switch-hitters and all considered premium athletes with full toolboxes (which is not to denigrate Mendez and De la Torre – I just don’t know anything about them yet). It may not be a stretch to suggest that the Rangers’ 2009 international position player class could be the club’s best since director of pro and international scouting A.J. Preller and senior director of baseball operations Don Welke were hired five years ago.

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com: "Word has been confirmed that the Rangers have signed Jurickson Profar, a former Little League World Series star from Curacao. The 16-year-old Profar is one of the top prospects to sign on international signing day. He is a pitcher and a shortstop who led Curacao to the Little League World Series title in 2004."

This is big news. Profar has said he prefers shortstop, and the speculation the last few days is that the Rangers would be inclined to let him stay there rather.

Jamey

In February we did two Newberg Report "Asked & Answered" features, in which I solicited your questions about the Rangers farm system or particular prospects for what amounted to a couple massive Prospect Q&A’s. Time for another installment, but I don’t have the time to go as deep as we did with the first two installments (which each included about 40 questions), so this time I’m going to take the 10 questions I like the best and run with those.

Take a look at the first two "Asked & Answered’s" ( here and here ) for an idea of the types of subjects we’ve gone with before, and send me your questions by emailing me at gjsneaker@sbcglobal.net.

This year’s Newberg Report Night at Rangers Ballpark will be on one of two dates – (1) Tuesday, June 30 (Angels) or (2) Sunday, August 2 (Mariners). If you’re interested in attending and have a strong preference as to which date we go with, let me know.

This will be our sixth annual event at the Ballpark, and as always, we hope to have Rangers GM Jon Daniels and Baseball Prospectus’s Will Carroll on hand for pregame Q&A segments in the Legends of the Game Museum as we raise thousands of dollars for a charitable cause (a portion of the registration fee will go to charity and we’ll also have a raffle of memorabilia prizes), and then take in the ballgame together. We’ve typically charged $30 for the entire event and that will probably be the cost again this year. We usually get the event going at about 4:00.

As always, we’ll have to limit reservations to the first 285 people who pay, due to auditorium capacity for the pregame portion. (If you’re interested in attending the game only, you can do that at half the cost for the event.) Like last year, we’ll be in ballpark seats, not suites.

If you have some input on which night to do it (both are 7:05 starts), now’s the time to email me (gjsneaker@sbcglobal.net). Thanks.
