The Phinsider Who would you rather have?

Just a quick question to pose for everyone:

Would you rather have a 27 year old 6'0" tall 203 lb RB who runs a 4.37 40 and catches the ball extremely well out of the backfield, or....

A 27 year old 6'0" tall 203 lb WR who runs a 4.37 40 and catches the ball extremely well split out wherever we put him?

The Phinsider What do you call a wide receiver that can't receive?

Don't give me examples...If your answer is CB, you prove my point. A WR that can't catch the ball is ABSOLUTELY no good to you on offense. In fact, they have a negative value to your offense.

I was initially upset because I really wanted Tommy Streeter or Marvin McNutt. When they drafted a guy I had not heard of(BJ Cuningham) I was a little let down. Then I looked at the video. I can tell from the 2 WRs we drafted late, this coaching staff puts a huge premium of WRs that can CATCH the ball well. When a WR doesn’t catch the ball it is a waste of a down. Last year, we wasted an awful lot of downs, which is partly why we didn’t score more points.

It also makes sense why they got rid of Marshall, he just plain dropped too many balls to fit in their offense. They don't neccessarily need big WRs or fast WRs. They need WRs with the ability to run good routes, and CATCH the ball routinely. The short passing game in the West Coast offense is an extension of the running game. Guys like Reggie Bush will do what they do best. We will give them the ball in space and let them make plays.

The Phinsider I know who the Dolphins are going to pick in the 2nd round...

OK, let me just preface this by saying this is not by any means a serious post. It in no way changes my membership in the rainbows and unicorns club of which I am the founder. It is just an exercise to make myself laugh a little bit before the draft at the insanity of it all. With that said, I have determined that the Dolphins will select Quinton Coples in the 1st round and either Brock Osweiler, Kirk Cousins, or Brandon Weeden in the 2nd round.

The Phinsider My Mock Draft/ Rant style....

So I am getting really sick of seeing all these mock drafts up day after day after day... So I decided to add my own mock draft to the mix. I am going to be as thorough as I can and explain why I am drafting certain players at certain spots, and I will try to include more video/pics if you rec me.

First let me say this. We don't have a franchise QB. There are a good number of other huge needs that we also have, but I will make the case that QB is the biggest need. Can someone please name for me the Patriots #2 pass rusher? Can someone name me their #1 WR? How many of their O-lineman were drafted in the first round? How strong is their secondary? They have had 3 things that the Dolphins have not.

Ryan Tannehill's Pro Day- every throw! Enough talk... Let's actually take a look at this kid in action. Yeah it is a scripted workout... but 65 of 68 apparently... not bad. I only saw 2 that he didn't make... one was a bad throw.. the other one might have been a little too hard... but then again there are some that will say the WR should have caught it because it hit him in the hands... It was a better pass than most of Chad Henne's passes...

At this point... what would it take to get Drew Brees?

He might not even sign the tender this year... if you were him.. would you sign it? What would we need to trade to make a play for him? And what would his contract look like? Just throwing it out there ... not saying we should...

Is it too late for us to do "Hard Knocks" this year...

I would love to get a view of things inside the locker room and front office too if possible... I think it would be really entertaining... If Jeff Ireland is serious about changing the fans' opinion of him, this would be a good way to do it. He is always hiding from the fans... this would be a step in the opposite direction... I understand wanting to keep some things private, but not everything...

The Phinsider My revised Ideal Offseason: Part 1- Free Agency w/ draft primer

ADDRESS QB-

We could do this a number of ways. Below is my list in order of how I would address this problem.

1.) We could go after Peyton Manning assuming he is healthy this would be my first choice.

He is proven and still has 2-3 years left. If he is healthy there are no questions about his ability. if you believe this guy won't ever be the same, you obviously believe he just woke up one day and was a franchise QB. If you are aware of the work that he put in to be one of the best of all time, you don't bet against the guy. If he does retire it will be because he wants to and not because he gave into what the naysayers were saying. If he had that kind of makeup, he never would have gotten this far in the first place. Don't be concerned about the number of surgeries.

Funny video

2.) My 2nd choice would be to go after Matt Flynn BUT ONLY if Philbin really believes that he can be the answer.

A lot of people take for granted that because Philbin knows him he knows he will be amazing and there are no reservations. Maybe he has seen him for years behind Rodgers and knows exactly what this kid can do... and it is not much. Maybe Philbin's advice is to stay far away from this guy and if that is that case, the argument to go get this guy is basically dead... right?

1b.) OR 2b.)

In either scenario I would move up in the 2nd round as needed to grab Ryan Tannehill.

No matter what you feel about either QB, you would be insane to bet go with just them. With Manning you have an older QB with some years left to play at a high level, but you have so much opportunity for your next QB to learn behind the smartest QB in the league right now for 2-3 years. In Matt Flynn's case, you really don't have much more to go on than 2 games. Even given Philbin's extensive experience with him, it is just too much to project how he will perform long term. You need that guy that is waiting for a chance to take over for him.... that is what good teams do.

So if you were hoping to switch to a 4-3

hate to burst your bubble but the hiring of Philbin makes this less likely. Whether the new DC comes from Miami or Green Bay they both have one thing in common. Both teams run a 3-4 defense, meaning if the DC comes from either team, we would likely still run a 3-4 defense. This is a positive though, because we are already a very good 3-4 defense, and it would be a shame to rebuild the style of the defense, as we might not be as good as a 4-3 defense. Stop trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, or trying to fix what isn't broken.

The Phinsider My ideal offseason (UPDATED)

1.) ADDRESS HEAD COACH-

the first thing I would do is hire Rob Chudzinski as head coach. I would like to keep Daboll as OC and Mike Nolan as DC, but if he likes someone else better, I would be ok with that. I like what he has done with the Panthers and Cam Newton this year. Maybe he can convince Ireland to actually pick some players from the U, instead of watching players go from right under our noses to make an impact on the rest of the NFL while we draft guys from Montana, Penn State, etc. I also think it would be good to bring some of that UM swagger.

I am still glad that we beat the Jets. I am glad that we will get to see posts like this in the offseason from Jets fans... and that is really what football is all about right?

So I was playing around with ESPN playoff machine to see if it was possible in some scenario for the Dolphins to make the playoffs. It would require some key wins by the Colts and the Rams along with some teams collapsing... but it is still statistically possible...

So now that we are not going to get the first pick...

It has been almost 13 years now since #13 retired. Its time to start the rumor mill.. The Dolphins drafted Marino with the 27th pick in the draft after Marino dropped "after a subpar senior season at Pitt, rumors of drug use and rumors that knee injuries." Let me start by saying that Andrew Luck has bad knees, and he takes lots of drugs. His mother is also a prostitute... wait .. that only works on us.... I take that back.. His mom is DEFINITELY NOT a prostitute.

Sage Rosenfels? Are you kidding me??

I feel like we have been here before already. Last week I was making bold predictions about our defense letting the Chargers convert on 3rd and long, and now this? Wake me up when we draft a young Dan Marino. Omar Kelly predicted that it would be 13 years until the Dolphins found a QB to replace Marino. Marino's last year was 1999. The 2012 draft would be exactly 13 years. Coincidence??

SUCK FOR LUCK!! Have you had your Andrew Luck fix today?

8 months ago Unicorn_pooping_a_rainbow_tiny Jason Scott_90 13 comments

after watching the game today... I have to say that we did not get any pressure on Brady...

But that was because Wake was held the whole game. I can't believe I was the only one to see it ... On every big run or big pass play it seemed that you could see it in the replay that Wake was held. Please someone else confirm....

What can we do to fix our O-line?

Is there anyone out there, or anyone that might be cuts down to 53 from 90 that we can grab? We really really need to do something .. we can't make it through the season with a bunch of warm bodies letting D-lineman push them into the backfield all season.

Join the "Trade a 2nd round pick for TEBOW BANDWAGON"

The Broncos think he is expendable now, and that means if they can get a 2nd round pick for someone that they don't value now that the previous staff "wasted" a first round pick on they will be all over that.
One of 2 things is going to happen with TEBOW:
1. He will find a way to win the same way he did in Florida. The guy is not a traditional QB, but all he does is win(much like Vince Young but without the emotional baggage that comes along with him) We will win 9-10 games and know that we have a franchise QB for years to come.
2. He will totally SUCK, and we will wind up with 2-4 wins and in the hunt for the 1st pick in the draft. For everyone already on the "SUCK FOR LUCK" bandwagon this is your bandwagon to chaffeur you over to that bandwagon. Is Chad Henne going to be really bad enough to get us 2-4 wins? He is going to get us 7-8 wins which will put us right in the middle of the 1st round. Can you then think of another scenario there where we will be able to trade our 1st round pick and 2nd round pick and wind up with the first pick in the draft? I can't.
Our defense is going to be better than it was last year and will keep us in many games. We know what Henne brings us, 7-8 wins and no chance of the post-season. We might roll the dice and win with Tebow. We might roll the dice and lose with Tebow, which in turn would be a WIN since either way we end up with a franchise QB. How is it that Ireland is not on the phone making this happen right now?

10 months ago Unicorn_pooping_a_rainbow_tiny Jason Scott_90 41 comments

No Orton trade?

Ok.... how about trading for Tebow then... He has enough upside... I would give a 2nd... maybe even a 1st....

10 months ago Unicorn_pooping_a_rainbow_tiny Jason Scott_90 13 comments

The Phinsider If only we stopped drafting QBs in the 2nd round and drafted one in the 1st round.... That would solve all our problems...

Now I have been one of the first one's to say that Henne was not doing the job last year.  But how many years have we wasted 2nd round picks on QBs only to expect instant gratification?  QB is obviously the most visible position on the whole field and if your QB makes a mistake everyone sees it immediately and says the QB has to go.  How many people recognize when a Center is totally messing up his job on every single play?  I admit I wouldn't notice.  Because it is a "QB driven league."  Pay no attention to the other 10 guys on the field, the offensive coordinator, or the head coach, it is all the QB.
