As the NFL continues to grapple with stories of former players living with long-term brain damage, there's a new proposal being discussed that would reduce the number of head-on collisions that players experience: Start practicing without helmets. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that John Madden, in his new role as an adviser to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, is regularly leading conference calls with a group of coaches to discuss ways to make the NFL safer, and one of the recommendations has been practicing without helmets.

The murkier question relates to the team's ability to deactivate Johnson on game days. But while, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported over the weekend, the NFLPA is ready to file another grievance if Johnson isn't returned to the starting lineup, a league source tells us that Johnson and his agent currently are prepared to accept any decision to deactivate Johnson. "There's nothing they can do," the source said. "It's the coach's decision." A decision to deactivate Johnson would entail more than Johnson standing in street clothes (or, in the case of Jevon Kearse, leaving the stadium). Johnson has a per-game roster bonus that pays him more than $60,000 per game, but only if he is on the active game-day roster. If he is deactivated, he loses that money.

Petition: Stop Larry Johnson from being the Chiefs all time leading rusher Let us start with the point: We do not want Larry Johnson to become the Kansas City Chiefs all time leading rusher. As a fan base, we have always taken pride in some of the names that have played on our field, hung in the Ring of Honor and those that are now immortalized in the Hall of Fame at Arrowhead Stadium. Names like Bobby Bell, Christian Okoye, Willie Roaf, Lenny Dawson, Priest Holmes, Abner Hayes and the amazing Derrick Thomas. These are just a few of the names that will live forever in the hearts and minds of Chiefs fans everywhere. We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson. Please do not let his name sit atop the all-time rushing leaders in Kansas City Chiefs history. Sign the petition

Contrary to a report originating from WEEI in Boston that free-agent receiver Joey Galloway was en route to Kansas City for a workout, Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa reports that, as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Galloway hasn't heard a peep from the Chiefs.

One day after the Redskins learned left tackle Chris Samuels could miss the season, they added guard Chad Rinehart to the injury report as questionable with a shoulder injury. Rinehart, though, was recently demoted from Washington's ever shifting line, so the news shouldn't have a major impact.

"No, there is not a quarterback controversy, " Haley said. "My message is going to continue to be consistent to you. I just want (everyone) to understand that." Haley’s message of consistency is one of competition and dependable play at each position, quarterback included. Croyle echoed Haley comments in the locker room today. "Matt is the man and they brought him here to be that," QB Brodie Croyle said today. "I just go out there and try to play. Whenever my number is call, I try to go out there and play. But there is no controversy."

Not buying a QB change in Kansas City - AFC West - ESPN

I don’t buy the fact that Haley is considering benching Cassel. It doesn’t make any sense. It wouldn’t be fair to Cassel, Haley himself or the team. It’s been one game.

A league source tells us that [Damion] McIntosh will start his September free-agency tour with a trip to Seattle, for a Tuesday visit. We're told that other teams have expressed an interest as well. McIntosh has been a consistent starter in three cities since 2001. He started every game last year with the Chiefs, his second with the team.

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson was the last runner to break the 100-yard rushing barrier vs. the Ravens defense. Believe it or not, that date was two-plus seasons ago in a 20-10 Chiefs loss to the Ravens in Baltimore (12/10/06).

With Chiefs starting quarterback Matt Cassel expected to miss multiple weeks due to an MCL sprain and Broncos starting quarterback Kyle Orton looking like he had a misadventure with a do-it-yourself bike rack and a knife doubling as a screwdriver (been there, done that), the Patriots might be wise to rethink their reported plan to waive backup quarterback Kevin O'Connell. Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli was the V.P. of player personnel in New England and Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was the offensive coordinator of the Pats when O'Connell was drafted. With each team potentially in need of another body on the depth chart, why not try to get a draft pick in lieu of cutting O'Connell?

Maybe the Pats should rethink cutting O'Connell | ProFootballTalk.com What do you think -- should the Chiefs try to trade for QB Kevin O'Connell?

Camp Confidential: Chiefs Toughening Up The Chiefs, who break camp Thursday, have undergone a harsh transition from the cushy Herm Edwards days to the no-breaks, harsh methods of new coach Todd Haley. Mimicking new general manager Scott Pioli's humorless ways, Haley has not been easy on his troops. Full Article: Camp Confidential: Chiefs Toughening Up

Bowe had five catches and beat up on much lesser competition. Ok, coach, your point has been made. Get the guy back with the first team. The Chiefs' chances are much better with Bowe playing. Plus, Bowe and quarterback Matt Cassel have to develop a game rhythm in the preseason. Bowe has to work with the first team in next week's game. Breaking down the Chiefs' game - AFC West - ESPN

I asked Chiefs fans if they were nervous about Glenn Dorsey. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 draft has struggled with his conditioning this summer as he tries to transition to a 3-4 defense and play defensive end. Many fans admit they are nervous. Still, others believe Dorsey will adjust and work out well for the Chiefs.
