Have to mention Sacramento briefly. DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside? That’s almost unfair. That team has the potential to be very, very good in a few years. Get some shooters to complement Evans and Cousins and they are laughing.
There's No Place Like Home: More Reasons Not to Give Up on Kevin Martin
The Kings played five games with Kevin Martin at the beginning of the season and lost four of them for a sterling 1-4 record. Following his injury, the Kings won 14 and lost 18 (a .438 clip), giving them a 15-22 record and a .405 win per(thousand?)centage. Now that he’s back, they’ve lost 12 of 13. With Kevin in the lineup, they’re 2-16, which is a woeful .111 winning percentage. .438 > .111. Therefore, the Kings are much better without Kevin Martin—right?
Not so fast. Numbers can be so misleading.
(Note: This does not include the OT win at New York.)

Jason Thompson, Foul Machine
(From the FanPosts. - TZ)
Much has been made of Jason Thompson's foul troubles. Last season, he finished with 314 personal fouls in 82 games, and the second-place fouler was not even close. Paul Millsap of Utah tallied 288 fouls.
Big men are much more likely to foul than smaller players, given the intensity of the game near the basket. This is nothing new. But being among the leaders in fouls committed does not necessarily reflect poorly on a player. Some previous season leaders in total fouls include Shawn Kemp, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Of course, leading the league in fouls doesn't instantly make you a superstar. Just ask Shawn Bradley, Danny Fortson, Jason Collins, Ervin Johnson, and Mikki Moore.
If you look at the league leaders in total fouls committed so far in 2009-10, JT's got the eighth highest total (Greg Oden leads the pack). In personal fouls per game, JT is second. So, who cares if JT has a bunch of fouls?

Just wanted to let everyone know that Mia was released from the NICU on March 28th after nearly four months. She was born at around 1.7 pounds, and now weighs about 6. She's a healthy crying, sleeping, and excreting machine. It's great to have her home.

DLD 2/9/09 I Need a Fix
I have a confession to make. I'm addicted to DLDs. A few years ago, when I really wanted to fit in with the all-time AN greats, I not only started using DLDs, but I also occasionally stooped to the level of creating crude ones in dark rooms. Anything to get my fix.
So, now I'm going through withdrawals. It's relapse time. In truth, I never stopped using—my supplier just ran out. I'm not only ready to use, I'm itching to abuse. Let's make this daily, folks.

Baby Mia
I just wanted to take a moment to thank everybody for the prayers, good vibes and well-wishes. Baby Mia is steadily improving each day. We're really hopefully that she'll be O.K. We really are touched by the outreach here. Thank you all so much.

A plea for help
I'm not normally one to do this, and I do so at the risk of offending some on here. But I believe in the power of prayer, and we need all the prayers we can get.
Earlier this year, my family and I moved to a small island in Japan. My wife was pregnant, so it was a big leap of faith for her to come out. Early Monday morning (in Japan), she was having a lot of pain in her stomach, so we called a rescue boat to the island to transport us to the hospital. She gave birth to a 26-week-old girl on a tiny rescue ship in the middle of nowhere in a country where she doesn't understand the language.
Baby Mia was born weighing 1.9 pounds. Her lungs and heart are underdeveloped. She is fighting for her life. For such a premature baby, it's a miracle that she is as strong as she is. We would appreciate any and all prayers on her behalf.

QOTM: Early Thanksgiving Edition
Since nobody else wants to do it, I will. I'm too lazy to go back farther than a month. Besides, it's not Quote of the Last 2 or 3 months. Let me know if I missed anything.

DLD 10/10/08 - Unnecessary Edition
So, it's 3 in the afternoon on a Friday in California and AN's already dead for the weekend. Why create a new DLD? Good question. I'll tell you when I find out.

A Day at the Coliseum
So, as we all know, Saturday was AN Day V: Tailgate Edition. Having lived in Utah the last five years, school and work dominated my life, and I was only able to visit California during the holidays--when baseball had gone into hibernation. It's not often that I get to go to games; the last one I attended was the fireworks game five years earlier. I had never been able to attend AN Day in the past, so it was very special to get to go this year. I'll write more about AN Day in a bit.

DLD 5/13/08: 'Cause nobody else cares anymore
A man dressed up as Darth Vader assaulted a church of Jedis with a metal crutch in Wales.
Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones — aka Master Jonba Hehol — with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head, prosecutors told Holyhead Magistrates' Court.

Kentucky Joe in 2008
I want to preface this by saying that I am not a statistician. This could all be hogwash, so bear with me.
Last year, Joe Blanton reach career bests in a few categories, including strikeouts (140) and K/9 (5.48). While Blanton is pitching deep into games this year (sample size warning), he is not striking out many batters. Blanton's 3.56 K/9 is by far the lowest of any of the A's starters, and good for 45th out of the 48 pitchers who have amassed at least 40 innings this year.
In addition to his low strikeout totals, Blanton is giving up 10.5 H/9, as opposed to last year's rate of 9.39. While his BB/9 is as solid as it’s ever been, his WHIP has jumped to 1.347 (last year: 1.217). His ERA+ is 99, even though he’s seemingly having a good season. It’s not a huge sample, but on average, Joe’s struggles typically seem to escalate after the fifth inning.

DLD 3/28/08 - Preason Seaview
It's that time of year again. The smell of fresh-cut grass, garlic fries and trough urinals is almost upon us. Yes, the A's already opened the season in Japan with a split against the Bostonian juggernaut.
Yes, they will keep this winning streak until at least Tuesday, April 1, when they take on the Red Sox again.

DLD 1/4/2008 - Nizzle Swizzle ChiSizzle
In case you haven't heard, Nick Swisher was traded to the White Sox for three minor leaguers, two of which seem to have quite a bit of potential.
Some are happy.
Poppy, not so much.
Official Kings website rant
Every time I go to check the score of the game at the Kings' official website, I get lost. How could such a high profile company such as a professional basketball team have such a busy, unintuitive website?

The Perfect Baseball Player
We often fantasize about having the perfect baseball player on the A's. Unfortunately, our low-budget team can't afford to shell out the necessary cash for the A-rods, Pujolses, and Bondses of the world. Instead, we're left with the Jack Custs and "broken down" Frank Thomases. I have decided that the only way that we could possibly get the perfect baseball player on our team is if we sent Larry Davis to clubhouses around the league and had someone else sneak in and pick up the leftover body parts.
There is an A in PIE
This is pretty much guaranteed to be the least interesting diary of all time, but I put too much work into this to not post it here.
As my mid-term project for my Comparitive Historical Linguistics course, I had to write a poem in Proto-Indo-European (PIE), a reconstructed language that is the hypothetical parent of Germanic, Latin, and Slavic languages (as well as many others). In the PIE culture, histories were not written, so bards would attend historic events and sing about them to preserve the memory. I wrote my poem about an epic battle between the A's and the Angels, described as a Proto-Indo-European might have seen it. Forgive the nonsense that immediately follows; it's an incomprehensible text of a really bad translation into PIE. But the English free translation follows. I'll blockquote the PIE so that you can skip it easily.

DLD 9/12/07 - One thing leads to another
Ellis, Piazza and Stewart were the offense yesterday against the Marineros. Ellis sux0rz at defense, though.
The only blemish on an otherwise sparkling night for Ellis was a second-inning error on a chopper up the middle by Seattle's Adam Jones. The miscue snapped Ellis' 102-game errorless streak, a team record.
Oh, and Rich Harden apparently exists, and the A's hope he'll start a couple games this season.
