Gaslamp Ball Hoffman Should Retire

I'm hoping Hoffman can get his 600th save before the end of the season.  If so, he should retire before he starts embarrassing himself and becoming like John Franco who hung around trying to pad his stats but ended up being a huge liability for the Mets.  I fear that Hoffman wants to try and keep some distance between he and Rivera for all-time saves but ........ the reality is, even if he holds his statistical lead, Hoffman will never be considered to be the greatest relief pitcher of all-time.  He'll definitely be among the top 10 (and probably top 5) but ..... he will jeopardize his stature if he hangs on just to try and rack up a few more saves.   Retire after this year, Trevor.  You've had a great run so go out with your head high.

Gang Green Nation Ryan and Woody On The Line

Once again we see the exhorbitant investment in Sanchez negatively affecting football decisions.   If I were a veteran on the Jets I'd be outraged by the fact that Woody and Ryan seem to be oblivious to hard decisions re: football operations and giving the Jets the best chance to win a game (and thus try to position themselves for a playoff slot) vs. the cynical approach of protecting and capitlizing on their investment in Sanchez.   This is a confluence of a penny-pinching owner and a first-year coach who has not yet matured into being a real head coach and is making decisions as if he was still a defensive coordinator.   I'm not saying that we should be expecting a genuine contending team this year but ....... the Jets have a shot at the playoffs which would be a good thing for the development of the team as a whole.   I think Ryan is unduly influenced by Woody and Tannenbaum who continue to wield way too much influence on football decisions and, unfortunately, they usually emanate from their short-term goals of earning profits (even at the expense of what is good for the ongoing success of the franchise).

Gang Green Nation Ryan Not Ready For Prime Time ......

I'll give Ryan credit for his talent and skill as a defensive coordinator.   He clearly is very good ....... maybe superior ..... in his ability to put together a first-rate defense in the NFL.   As to his ability to excel as a head coach ....... I think the jury is definitely out in this area.   Ryan is growing increasingly suspect in his ability to exercise good judgement as a head coach ....... not only in his game-day decisions but also in his inarticulate ways of communicating to the press (and no doubt to his players as well).

The more one sees (and hears) Ryan, the less convincing he is in his attempt to be a head coach of an NFL team.   His preparations for games are suspect and his game-day decisions are even more suspect.   It's too bad that Woody is probably even more incompetent than Ryan because he (Woody) probably doesn't have a clue whatsoever that he made a bad decision in hiring Ryan.  The Jets should cut their losses at the end of the season ........ declare this season a mistake and go after a real head coach.

The Phinsider For those who wanted Ginn to be cut .....

we'd now be looking at 2-5.   I think there is general acknowledgement of Ginn's weaknesses as a receiver.   Whether or not he is able to improve up on this is still up in the air.   That said, there is a certain segment of posters who seem to want to scapegoat Ginn for almost every shortcoming on the Dolphin teams of the past three years.

Today is one of those days where the explosiveness of Ginn was a game changer.   Yes ----- we haven't seen nearly enough of it but ...... let's face it, the Jets totally shut down our offense today and our defense didn't do a great job of containing a fairly weak Jets offense (although ...... much credit is due to the defense for their work on the last Jets drive).  Without Ginn today, the Dolphins lose ........ plain and simple.   I'm wondering if any credit will be given him from those who seem to want to fault him for pretty much everything.

The Phinsider Just Like Braylon Edwards

needed to get traded from Cleveland, the same is true with Ginn.   Unlike others, I still think Ginn has some real strengths that could benefit another team.   I don't see it happening with the Dolphins.   I don't think, though, that he should be benched at this point.   Rather ...... he should still get playing time and the Dolphins should try to play to his strengths in order to keep some value for a trade.   Right now it appears to be a no-win situation.   I think the Dolphins would be better off to move in a different direction and, likewise, Ginn would be better off elsewhere.

I hear the criticisms of Ginn and don't argue with the legitimate ones.   Anyone can drop a pass once in a while but ..... his drops have been too frequent and indefensible.   Likewise ...... his routes are not great although he has made improvement in that area.   As to some of the cheap shots, though, ......... I think they are off base.   For those posters who want to criticize his returns ....... I think he hasn't been used enough to really make a judgement on that front.   And .... I think he still has the type of breakaway speed that, if given a few returns every Sunday, would produce a handful of long returns translating into good field position and probably a TD or two over the course of a season.

At this point, though, it is a bad situation.   I don't think Ginn will be an elite receiver in the NFL but I do think he could be a significant contributor on a different team.   His departure would also mean that some of the Ginn haters on this board would need to redirect their energies to finding a different scapegoat for what is still some structural shortcomings that plague the Dolphins.   It will take a while to rebuild this thing ........ Ginn hasn't much contributed to the rebuilding effort but he is by no means the only problem the Dolphins have at this point.

The Phinsider Ginn Critics

Hope you rethink some of the criticism.  Ginn's 53-yard TD reception and his good return giving them decent field position prior to the final drive were both instrumental in the Dolphins win tonight.   It was a great team effort ...... the running game was great, the OL beat the Jets at the line and Henne had an excellent game.   All of this was very positive and ........ Ginn came through when they needed him as well.   If the Dolphins are going to move forward ..... they do it as a team.   Enough with the sniping.

Pinstripe Alley Pettitte Once Again ....

With last night's win, Pettitte has tied Smoltz for the all-time lead in post-season wins.   It's not even the record so much as just the fact that Andy continues to do what he has done almost throughout his career on both the Yankees and even when he was with the Astros ...... come through in big-game situations.   Yes ..... there were a couple blow-ups (Arizona being one of them) when he fell short but, overall, Pettitte has been a money pitcher throughout his career.

I give A-Rod and Jorge lots of credit last night for their clutch hitting but ..... it was Andy who kept the Yankees in the game by pitching a gem ...... on the road against a good-hitting lineup and under difficult circumstances at the Metrodome.

When Andy does decide to call it a career (which, I hope, is not for at least another couple years), I don't know what his prospects will be for the HOF.   I do think, though, when you look at his W-L percentage and, more importantly, his performance in the post-season, that he should be given serious consideration.

Gang Green Nation Sanchez on Vilma

I assume he was just acting in the spur of the moment but ....... Sanchez's knee clip on Vilma was a very low blow (no pun intended).   I know Sanchez has been thrust into the "golden boy" role by the media and Jets management but ..... his foul against Vilma yesterday was disgusting.   Yet ...... people are focusing on the three interceptions and the fumble.   They all should be under the microscope.

Sanchez is off to a reasonably good start for the Jets but ....... the press and Jets management really needs to take a big step backward on him.   He is no Namath and has a helluva lot to prove before we start annointing him as the Jets savior.
