One Player Per Position

A lot of mock drafts out there have the idea that Detroit will select one player to fill each position the Lions need to fill on their roster... As if thats what the Lions do. Quickly I'd like to start a fire of players that YOU like at each position..

..after I show you my favorites in this years Draft..

OT - Fischer (obviously) - Projected: 1st round

G - Warmack (duh) - Projected 1st round

C - Mike Golic jr. (cool, right?)- Projected: undrafted

TE - Ben Cotton - Projected: 6th - 7th round

WR - Tavon Austin - Projected: 1st round

RB - Mike Gilislee (Gators gunna gate) - Projected 4th round

DE - Margus Hunt - Projected: 2nd round

OLB - Khaseem Greene - Projected: 4th round

CB - Xavier Rhodes - Projected: 1st - 2nd round

S - Matt Elam - Projected: 1st - 2nd round

KR/PR - Denard Robinson - Projected: 5th round

P - Brad Wing - Projected: 7th round

BONUS DUDE (ANY PLAYER) - CB Tyrann Mathieu - Projected: 2nd - 4th round

Now the Lions can't possibly get all of these guys... And I doubt they will pick 1 player for each need... But I'm hoping that more than one of these guys plays for Detroit in the upcoming season.. Who are your favorite players this year at each position (that the Lions need to address)?

The Lions Top Guys At #5

After the pre-draft press conference with Martin Mayhew I can't help but wonder who the Lions would consider taking at five.. and what moves or picks would cause them to move deep in the first round... The Lions obviously Like the idea of Fischer or Joeckel. After reading the Q and A's of the press conference It seems they're into Miliner and probably wouldn't mind going with Warmack (being that his salary would probably around the $20 million over 4 years range) So who are the other guys? And who would they be looking to pick up if they traded back?

Here's what I think they're top 7 player are that they would consider at #5:

1. OT Eric Fischer

2. OT Luke Joeckel

3. CB Dee Miliner

4. DE Dion Jordan

5. OG Chance Warmack

6. WR Tavon Austin

7. LB Jarvis Jones

..And here is a few guys who I think they would pick up if they moved back (picks 10 - 20)

1. WR Tavon Austin

2. S Kenny Vaccaro

3. OT Lane Johnson

4. DE Barkevious Mingo

5. OG Larry Warford

..And here are a few guys who I think they would pick up if they moved back in the 20s...

1. S Matt Elam

2. CB Xavier Rhodes

3. S Eric Reid

4. WR Cordarrelle Patterson

...Keep in mind, good starting/rotational DEs are available in the second round.. And the drop off for WRs after the first 3 dudes is pretty significant.. OTs, Centers, and Guards with size and ceiling litter this draft.. To me, it seems like CB, WR, S with NFL starting talent is limited.. and with the Lions having the #5 pick, could solidify any of those positions early and quickly.

...Thoughts?

With the 5th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select: Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver. West Virginia.

- Giving the Lions a 1st day starter on the other side of the field from Calvin Johnson.. And creating competition/ an alternate PR/KR with Reggie Bush. Tavon opens a whole new section in the Lions playbook, and creates huge mismatches leading scoring opportunities on every snap.. with Tavon on the field it will leave Reggie Bush, Brandon Pettigrew, Tony Scheffler, or Nate Burelson completely open and/or Calvin in single coverage on every play. The Lions will break scoreboards with this pick.. PICKING TAVON AUSTIN AT #5 IS NOT A REACH!!!!!!!!

With the 36th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select: Margus Hunt, Defensive End. SMU.

- in this draft the top 10 DEs are the same grade. So it comes down to motor, size, and upside.. Hunt checks each of these boxes, especially size (being the biggest fastest dude in the draft). He will alternate with Willie Young perfectly. I'm also down with any other DE that's graded higher.. I think I mostly like Hunt for his ablilty to block kicks and extra points... NCAA record 17... (10 field goals, 7 extra points) <<<<< That's freaking nuts!

With the 68th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select: Khaseem Greene, Linebacker. Rutgers.

- I'd be okay with any higher rated LB, CB, or Safety here.. I'd like Tyrann Mathieu here.. But we'll see..

Reasons I did not take any OL in the first 3 picks:

- I'm assuming the best 2 OT are gone before the 5th pick. Thus, shuffling the Best Players Available.. and leaving the Lions to take the Best Center AND best Guard (or Tackle that could switch to Guard) available in later 3rd and early 4th round.

- The Lions look like they have a (for lack of a better word) decent OL in my opinion, with Nagy, Reiff, Raiola, Sims, Fox.. with Hilliard and Gandy as depth guys.. Obviously needs to be addressed though.. (Possibly a free agent?)

- This draft is significantly deep at OL talent.

*******Don't get me wrong I'm hoping for one of those tackles to slide into our lap... But I'm doubting it happens.. and the next best way to keep Stafford healthy is by keeping the pass rush to a minimum, thus spreading the field, and giving him a COUPLE of quick players who are easy to dump the ball off to..*****

Jordan vs Ansah

IN MY OPINION, I think Dion Jordan could fit the wide 9 perfectly.. like Jason Pier-Paul fit in New York. Now, Ansah wont be productive for at least 2 years, and he'll end up being more like getting a second Willie Young.. Except instead of a 7th round pick, we're using the 5th pick in the draft. Jordan's the way to go if both OTs are gone... I'm still not opposed to Tavon Austin at 5 either.. WR is a tough position to sift through in any draft, especially this one. But I'm not talking about Tavon as a possibility.. Only because most of you fellas don't agree with it being a very big need.. But Ansah is not even in my top 5.

2. Joeckel, OT

3. Jordan, DE

4. Miliner, CB

5. Austin, WR

Lions Go For Another Free Agent DE?

This year The Draft is all funked up.. The "TOP" Defensive Ends are not very good.. I believe the Lions will go O line this year.. But some disagree.. And IF the Lions address the DE position further this year, they should NOT use the number 5 pick on one.

Instead of WASTING a top 5 pick on drafting one of the "top prospects" DE's this year the Lions need to get a proven vet. who can rush the passer and make tackles in the NFL.. Next year will be a great year for DE's coming out of college.. Easley, Clowney, Jeffcoat, there's like 20 D linemen that will be better than any of the guys in the "top" this year.. Next year the Lions can go for a longterm DE that can grow in Honolulu Blue..

Umenyiora, Freeney, and Dumerville are all unsigned still... I even think i'td be awesome to even sign Urlacher (impossible, I know, but) since he's still unsigned, and make him play DE for the us.. LOL That'd be crazy..

The point is the Lions should not draft a DE in the 1st round.. and if Fischer and Joeckel are gone (most probable scenario) they should either take Warmack(G) or Johnson(T)... OR accept a trade, and pick up Tavon Austin.. I guess I'd be okay with Miliner but his surgery has swayed me to let him drop to someone else.. Now that Houston is back the Lions can continue to develop the 3 CBs they got last year.. And maybe pick up another this year that has value and a big upside, or has produced in college but has question marks (like Mathieu :))

Mathieu: A Lions MUST HAVE PLAYER.

Tyrann Mathieu is the best PR/KR in the 2013 NFL Draft (better than Austin) and happens to be a glaring hole the Lions MUST address this offseason.. He should be projected in the late first - early second round just based on that.. And his ball skills lead me to think that he could even play running back for the Lions if they wanted to line Reggie up in the slot from time to time and still wanted that elusive speed option...

He may have been a bit out of shape at the combine, but once he starts getting into the grind of the NFL he'll make up for it.. I am weary of his off the field issues too ...But those issues seem minuscule when compared to his tenacity and play making ability. The Lions cannot afford to pass on another Janoris Jenkins-like CB.. especially when he can return punts and kickoffs like he did at LSU.. He's probably a bit of a risk on day 2 (for the Lions).. but If we don't jump on him early day 3, we will have missed the boat for sure.,

i'm predicting:

5th pick: Chance Warmack (Yes, even though he's a Guard)

36th pick: Margus Hunt .DE

68th pick: Tyrann Mathieu .CB

Trades will go on, so who knows what'll really happen ..but those 3 players (I believe) the Lions MUST HAVE to make it to the playoffs.

Should The Lions Reach at #5?

I would be pleasantly surprised to see the Lions reach for Tavon Austin with the fifth pick in the draft. If Fisher and Joeckel are both gone by the Lions pick... And they're sticking to the ol' best-player-available-tactic, I feel like Austin isn't much of a reach anyway. His film is scary... I don't want the Lions to have to defend him.. Especially when they could pick him up.. 4.34 - 40? 4.01 - 20 yard shuttle? Um is that good..? I mean just the thought of him, Reggie, and Calvin on the field at the same time would freak teams out.. The Defense needs depth but depth players are all over this draft... Especially on defense.. Yeah, Tavon needs to gain some muscle.. But he's going to be able to get that up for sure.. He's just a kid right now. He's going to break some records in my opinion.

I do like Chance Warmack ..and Lane Johnson too, they probably aren't much of a reach either (especially Warmack), but Austin would be a Playmaker... The Lions need as many of those that they can get their hands on.. Defensive playmakers are all over the second and 3rd round... but "offensive studs" are a little harder to come by this year.. I just dont think the Lions should pass on the best available WR especially if he runs a sub 4.4 - 40.. and can juke LBs out of their shoes.. So, that's My Pick at #5.. The Detroit Lions "Reach" for: Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver. West Virginia,

..Just youtube his highlights.. And look at his stats last year.. Tell me you don't think the Lions could use HALF of that.

Okay Official Final Jeff Mock 2013

Alright, I got out all the mumbo-jumbo about Tebow coming to Detroit and Welker or Harvin wearing Honolulu Blue next year.. And with or without trading back in round 1.. This is how I see the picks going.. In my most hopeful dreams... Not by round because who knows.. but these picks are by priority and assumed availability..

1st Pick: Chance Warmack. G, Alabama - Day 1 difference maker..

2nd Pick: Margus Hunt DE, SMU - Value ..After somehow slipping to day 2. Day 1 Starter.

3rd Pick: Matt Elam. S, Florida - Cant even tell he's undersized by the amount of (controversial) concussions he's going to cause. (Hopefully he slips past New England in 1st and 2nd rounds.) Also a starter for the Lions Day 1..

4th Pick: Khaseem Greene. LB, Rutgers - If he's still there.. He's developable.. And 2nd string may be alright.. But probably starting if both Durrant and Levy aren't back.

5th Pick: Tyrann Mathieu. CB/PR/KR, LSU - huge Value because of size and Character.. But maybe every team in the NFL is thinking that so he may go quick..

6th Pick: Mike Gilislee. RB, Florida - Not the speed back the coaches are hoping for, but the most well rounded and least likely to get injured.. Still real fast.. Could be a dream if he too slips by the Patriots.

7th pick: Rodney Smith. WR, Florida State - Big fella, with jukes, and decent hands and his straight line speed is fine with me for his size.. (Was listed at 6'6" ...official combine measurements: 6'4" ..So he must just look taller than he is..)

Thats about it... With compensatory picks probably add a OL and a RB.. And possibly Melvin White. CB, Louisiana Lafayette. He's a rude boy.

...Not much different from my first one... But I wasn't sure which players were priority after round 4.. And Denard Robinson may vanish too early.. I'm predicting a "Ted Ginn moment" with him within the first 2 rounds.. Possibly with the Honey Badger too.. (But I've got my fingers crossed)Though, Mathieu would have been taken 5th overall if he hadn't gotten kicked outa school.. So it makes more sense.

Lions D MAKEOVER: Rookie SECondary

What if The Lions take Dee Milliner with the fifth pick.. Matt Elam with the 36th pick.. And Tyrann Mathieu with the 68th.. Dee can be the fast one.. E can the mean one.. And T can be the bandit.. (DET... get it.. it's like a sign..)

This could sure up the secondary for a while.. Plus, practicing coverage in the NFL on Calvin everyday will get them up to speed pretty quick on dealing with bigger and faster dudes every week I'd imagine.. Ironically, Detroit could be the best place for a SECondary to grow up together.

Signing Dwight Freeney, and Reggie Bush, would make this an even easier move to make.. Also Resigning Houston, Delmas would too..

What do you guys think... Is it as bad an idea as it sounds, or is it possible? ...And would you as a FAN.. be pissed?

The Lions Trade Out of #5 Pick? (Pseudo- Jeff Mock 1.5)

The Lions need to fill some holes with young beasts. Am I right? ..Young beasts that aren't having surgery after the draft, that don't have injuries plaguing them, and aren't going to cost a bunch of money (since Calvin, Suh, and Stafford already take up enough cap space), and haven't proven to be EXACTLY what the Lions need.. I say trade back to the bottom of the first round and pick up another 2nd AND 3rd choice or two... and grab some real talent that will fill holes and leadership positions.. Guys like:

Matt Elam. Safety. Florida.

Margus Hunt. Defensive End. SMU.

Brian Schwenke. Center. California.

Khaseem Greene. Linebacker. Rutgers.

Mike Gilislee. Running Back. Florida.

Tyrann Mathieu. Cornerback. LSU.

Denard Robinson. Athlete. Michigan

I'm not suggesting they get all of these guys... Just most of 'em..LOL. Which means I'm suggesting the Lions become serious traders and talkers this year... making lots of calls in the "war room", and streaching those extra picks they get for trading out of the fifth spot, for as many extra 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks to pick up some extra dudes with talent and size, that can fit in and play different roles.. Almost immediately.. if not immediately.

There's a number of teams that have an extra 2nd and/or 3rd pick... So depending on who they (possibly) trade with is gunna probably affect this how legit this mock draft is, but like I said, they're gunna have to wheel n deal these picks to grab most of these guys...

Snag Hunt First, DE's are going to fly off the board... So make him a first rounder. Starter probably..

Then Elam, He's underrated by some but teams like that Patriots (who love to draft Gators) 49ers, and Ravens, could be pretty high on him. So Grab him with the 36th pick.. Starter definitely..

Khaseem Green and Mike Gilislee come next Depending on if they're there... Start Mike behind Mikel.. And Greene would start depending on what LBs come back..

...More trading and pick swapping happens blah blah yadda yadda... Who's available? Oh why it's My man Denard.. and Tyrann Mathieu... Oh hey guys, nice to see you slip so far down the draft board... SNATCH! Tyrann could probably start.. And Denard could be anything he else we need.. like a kick/punt returner.. or a running back.. or a QB.. just in case...

Round #1. With the 5th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, The Detroit Lions select: Chance Warmak, Guard, Alamaba.

(if he's there. Otherwise The Lions select: Jarvis Jones, Linebacker, Georgia.)

Round #2. With the 36th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, The Detroit Lions select: Margus Hunt, Defensive End, SMU

(if he's there. Otherwise The Lions select: Matt Elam, Safety, Florida)

Round #3. With the 68th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, The Detroit Lions Select: Khaseem Greene, Linebacker, Rutgers

(This is assuming the Lions did NOT select Jarvis Jones with their first pick, and that Greene is still available. Otherwise The Lions select: Mike Gilislee, Running Back, Florida.)

In the 5th round The Lions should get Gilislee, (if he's still there.. and they didn't have to grab him in the 3rd.)

(Other Possible picks: Tyrann Mathieu, Corner Back, LSU if he's there.. OR Denard Robinson, Athlete, Michigan.)

The rest of the picks are so hard to predict just because who knows what the other 31 teams are going to do, so here's a list of cats I like for the later round picks...

DeVonte Holloman, Linebacker, South Carolina

Rodney Smith, Wide Receiver, Florida State.

Chris Thompson, Running Back, Florida State

Melvin White, Corner Back, Louisiana-Lafayette

Lerentee McCray, Linebacker, Florida

I don't know too much about interior offensive lineman, but I'm sure The Lions could use the biggest ones left on the board.. If they grade higher than these fellas listed above..

But I think OL (if not addressed with the first pick with Warmack) should be a free agency deal.. As well as Corner.. Just because a veteran OL has already generally proven his value.... And THIS year the same corner in the 2nd round is the same corner in the 5th and 6th.. Plus The Lions just got 3 red/ white chip corners last year... If they DRAFT more than one corner THIS year.. thats how to (continue to) stockpile a terrible secondary.. I also wouldn't mind a FA Running Back.. Just 'cause, in a couple years Barry Sanders Jr. is coming out... : )))

But Warmack's a Beast,
