Right Guard and Tackle 2009 Options For The Redskins

With half of the games remaining in the 2009 season is it appropriate to ask questions about the potential replacements NOW?  For example who are the players out there as free agents that may be better than Heyer at right tackle or any of the various right guards the Skins have attempted to use since Thomas went down?

How would Heyer stack up against Jon Runyan? Kwame Harris? Terrance Metcalf? Oliver Ross? Marvel Smith? Anthony Davis? George Foster?

Tackle:  Metcalf, Terrence Career  Games (G) 84 Games Started  (GS)   25;  Ross, Oliver   Career    G  89   GS  53; T  Smith, Marvel  Career G 111  GS     1; Davis, Anthony    Career    G 47   GS 32; Foster, George   ( CLE 1st rd 2003 2nd OL selected) Career G   68   GS 57;  Shelton, L.J.  Career G 146 GS  127.

Skin right guard attempts versus (see below)?

Center Ghiaciuc, Eric  Career G 48     GS 42;

Even if these players were only active one season would the roster spots be worth it?

Things have shaken out some since late July on the Skins roster

VA-Skin posted his perspective on the 53 man roster including a depth chart -http://www.hogshaven.com/2009/7/24/961073/53.

The field goal kicker has not been challenged in the preseason games.

The Skins showed their own depth chart.  VA-Skin's depth chart is in agreement for the 1st stringers and little has changed except for #2 QB and maybe Marko Mitchell making the 53 man roster.  At least Marko has some boosters.

Anyone willing to come up with at least a new 2nd stringer list based on open practices and preseason games?

Joel Bell

Joel Bell was another player out of a small college.  He was an undrafted free agent of the Buffalo Bills and was cut.  He has now started a game at right tackle for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

"FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS: Import rookie Joel Bell makes his first start at right tackle for the Riders. The Roughriders are hoping for more physical play from Bell, who is 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds. Bell takes over from non-import Matt O’Meara."

Bell had some good combine info. http://tinyurl.com/muv7wb.  40yds - 5.11, 20 yds - 3.0, 10yds - 1.69.  He would have been a project, but he is athletic.  Few NFL linemen have his speed but he can use some upper body strength.

Bell will probably end up back in the NFL after putting on some bulk.

I have pasted the 2008 & 2007 Run Blocking statistics from Football Outsiders (FO):

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol2007.   Toggle back and forth to 2008 and other FO calculations.

It is notable that the rank of the Redskins in this scheme of things improved from 2007 to 2008.  Where as the Eagles suffered a significant reversal.   The change in the Giants and Cowboys rankings were not as significant.  It remains to be seen whether the changes in the offensive lines for the Eagles and Skins will improve their run blocking performance in 2009.   The third table is of interest since it shows the five directions that teams tended to run their plays.  The Redskins tended to avoid the MID/GUARD (see tables) plays in both years compared to most other NFL. teams.  Was this a matter of choice or of real options?  The latter would support the notion that the Skins were weak at guard and center positions.

Current Undrafted Offensive Linemen

There are currently (7/3/09) about 161 undrafted free agent (UDFA) offensive linemen (OL) on NFL team rosters.   OLs that played in games amounted to 49 of this total and 37 of these players started at least one game.  The 2009 rookie UDFA were 67 and many of which will become part practice squads after 9/1/09.
There were another 45 UDFA OL that did not play in 2008 and a lot of them came into the league in 2008.

NFL Interior Offensive Linemen

A lot of comments have been made concerning the lack of interior offensive linemen by the Redskins over recent years. This is the true situation, however, linemen selected in the first few rounds generally have long and productive NFL careers.

Randy Thomas was the 10th interior lineman (LM) and 3rd guard selected in the 1999 draft. Chris Samuels was the 1st LM selected in the 2000 draft.  Casey Rabach was the 10th LM and 1st center selected in the 2001 draft.  Mike Williams was the 1st LM selected in the 2002 draft.  Derrick Dockery was the 14th LM and 3rd guard selected in the2003 draft.  Chad Rinehart was the 13 LM selected in the 2008 draft.  Most often only the 1st round selections play and start 16 games.  So far Mike Williams has not accomplished much considering his position in the draft and Chad Rinehart's lack of playing time is not so unusual for a 3rd rounder.  Jeremy Bridges was a 6th round pick and Stephan Heyer was an undrafted free agent. It would be nice to have a picket fence of 1st rounders. ;)

Since 1995 604 LM, 101 centers, 212 guards, and 291 tackles have been selected in the draft.  First, 2nd, and 3rd round picks amounted to 226 players. In the years 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, and 1995 there were respectively 36, 40, 42, 50, 50, 41, 41, 34, 41, 32, 39, 43, 34, 39, and 42 LM selected in all rounds and 9, 10, 9, 11, 9, 7, 8, 11, 7, 11, 11, 10, 8, 10, 16 in the 1st 2 rounds.  Since 2002 there have been 32 teams in the league and obviously only a few teams can get the most highly regarded players in a given year.  While the Redskins have had scant pickings in the draft, the typical NFL team is nearly on a par with them considering free agents and trades.
