Jill Ellis named head coach of United States Women's National Team

Jill Ellis has been named the head coach of the USWNT today, after recently serving as interim coach of the squad, taking over for the recent-fired Tom Sermanni. Ellis, 47, has been involved at every level of US Soccer over parts of the last two decades, including stints as the head coach of the U20/U21 Women's National Team and as Women's Development Director for US Soccer, a post that saw her oversee the U14, U15, and U17 programs. She also served as an assistant on the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning squads. Ellis recently called in Thorns midfielder Allie Long and defender Nikki Marshall into camp prior to their friendly with Canada, while midfielder Amber Brooks made her USWNT debut in November 2013 and Tobin Heath, Alex Morgan, and Rachel Van Hollebeke are all established USWNT players, giving the Thorns 6 players in the WNT pool, as well as Mana Shim in the U23 pool.

CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifiers moved to United States

The CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada have been moved from Mexico to the United States, the confederation announced today. With an expanded field from 16 to 24, 3.5 spots from CONCACAF will now be up for grabs this summer and fall, with Canada getting an automatic qualifying spot as host nation and the United States a front-runner for qualification, expect some surprises to come through the qualification process. Venues have not been announced, but it is highly likely that Portland will put in a bid. Having hosted the Women's World Cup in both 1999 and 2003, and several US Soccer and CONCACAF events, especially on the women's side and the runaway success that has been the Portland Thorns, Providence Park should earn some serious consideration. No date has been announced as to when a decision will be made.
